The Printed Letter Bookshop
The Printed Letter Bookshop | Katherine Reay
59 posts | 41 read | 102 to read
Amid literature and lattes, three women come together and find that sharing ones journey with best friends makes life richer. When attorney Madeline Carter inherits her aunts bookstore in a small town north of Chicago, she plans to sell it and add the proceeds to her nonexistent investment portfolio. But plans change when Madeline discovers the store isnt making money and she gets passed over for promotion at her firm. She quits in protest, takes the train north, and decides to work at the store to prep it for sale. Madeline soon finds herself at odds with employees Jessica and Courtney; when she also finds herself attracted to an affianced man, it only confuses the entire situation. After blowing up her marriage two years earlier, Jessica has found solace working at the bookstore and a kindred spirit within its owner, Maddie Cullen. But when Maddie dies and her niece, Madeline, barges in like a bulldozer, Jessica pushes at the new owner in every wayuntil she trips over common ground. Soon the women are delving into online dating and fashion makeovers, and Jessica feels the pull to rediscover her art, a love she thought long behind her. After a night of bad decisions leaves the store in peril, Courtney arrives and tries to save the day. While she, too, found sanctuary in the little bookstore, she knows its under-insured, in the red, and will never survive. When she discovers her teenage daughter has played a part in vandalizing the store, Courtney taps into strength she didnt know existedor had long forgotten. The quietest of the three, she steps up and finds a way to save her family, the store, and the precious friendships that have grown within it. The Printed Letter Bookshop is the story of friends who find each otherand themselvesin a place none of them ever expected.

This book resonated with everything I love about books and stories about people making significant changes in their lives. Madeline Cullen inherits her aunt Maddie‘s home and bookshop in Chicago unexpectedly, after her aunt dies. Madeline has fond memories of spending time with her aunt and uncle at their bookshop during her childhood. To continue reading my review, please visit my book blog https://abookandadog.com 📚🐾

I rarely bail so I feel a bit like a quitter but I've tried three times now to dive into this one and I just can't sync with it. I didn't dislike the characters but It felt a bit too tell instead of show... 😊😕

I enjoyed this book overall, but...this book was a little too Hallmark-Movie-Channel for me. I found it almost entirely predictable, it occasionally got confusing bouncing between three different narrators, and the storyline was a little tired. The characters were fun though, and relatable. There were a couple of parts that were really touching. All in all I'd say this was a fun, easy, quick read that makes a great brain-break.

Last lazy morning of a long weekend. Taking advantage of that by savoring reading & my coffee. When I am working, I am up at 5:30- and not being a morning person its all I can do to get ready to be at work on time. Even with laying out clothes etc night before, I am just so slow! So this morning, with no where to go, is blissful!

BethM Same! How is this one? I keep going back and forth on whether I want to read it. 4y
kspenmoll @BethM It is about a bookshop so that‘s why I grabbed it off the library shelf. Lots of books, restoring a bookstore, crossroads in characters lives, renewal, forgiveness, romance. Easy read, I enjoyed it -met my mood this weekend. 😍 4y

This was my first book of Reay‘s and though I enjoyed it, I wasn‘t blown away (though many say this isn‘t her typical book). I liked the book references, the varied pictures of the stages of women‘s lives/inner thoughts/challenges, and the character growths and truths. But the satisfying endings weren‘t my favorite, and the perspective jumps were jarring at times.

Enjoyable read - I‘ll read more of her backlist soon!

Truth! "...to feel wired for others yet irrelevant; to need community but equally to be unable to find one; that cleaning, cooking, and caring for my family is a pleasure and a blessing, but it isn't the same as feeling connected to them; to do things for others isn't the same as being with them; that watching television...isn't always "spending an evening together." ...I wonder what within me is compelling enough that anyone would stay with me."

4.5 ☆ This is my 1st Katherine Reay novel and what a lovely read it turned out to be. It‘s centered around three women and a cherished small-town independent bookstore named Printed Letter Bookshop.
It overflows with many wonderful things—reconnecting with loved ones, having hope, trusting another and creating lifelong friendships. It‘s a great story!

This book was like reading a Hallmark movie! After reading a few reviews about it being a little slow I almost put it back on the shelf (I typically prefer adventure/mystery), but I'm so glad I determined to read it! I loved seeing the transformation of the 3 main character as they each navigated their way through a tough, life-changing season. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey!

“Because I keep reading and feeling this yes, right here, again and again, and it‘s not that I‘m agreeing with anything—it feels like the opposite, that I‘ve gotten so much wrong, but yet I‘m loved and, if I ask for forgiveness, I can be forgiven and it can be spring. And that compels me to change. All the grace and mercy and love that‘s there for the asking, for the receiving, is not a fairy tale.”

I wanted to like this book about 3 women trying to run a bookshop and learning about friendship along the way, but I really just found it to be only okay. This is mainly because the women aren‘t drawn finely enough to make them completely distinct characters, and some of the elements of the plot are predictable.

Lova Thanks for the heads up- I was about to add it to my list but maybe I‘ll wait. 5y
KathyWheeler @Lova I don‘t like to discourage anyone from reading something they might enjoy, and I didn‘t hate it — I‘m just glad I got it from the library. 5y

I think my problem is that I‘m listening to instead of reading this book, but I‘m having a little trouble keeping the three main characters apart in my head. Finally, at 3 hours in, they are beginning to separate out.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was a book about women. How we struggle, how we plan, how our plans go awry, how we stand fast against the trials of our lives, how we come through those trials stronger, how we count on family and friends, and how we sometimes use and abuse those relationships. Good story.

The Printed Letter Bookshop is my first read of a Katherine Reay novel & I am blown away, so much so I bawled in my kitchen like a baby when I read the final word on the last page. This novel was the cathartic read I didn‘t even know I needed. The characters in The Printed Letter Bookshop are wonderfully crafted. This is a story about dynamic women living life as honestly and honorably as they can. The Printed Letter Bookshop is phenomenal.
