The start of a fresh binge so that I can finally read the new trilogy!! Told a friend that this is a cozy, nostalgic read for me and his response was “isn't it like, really violent?“
They can't all be sugarplums, I guess.

Wow! This book has had me curious for a while. I‘m sure it would have been a favorite if I had read it as a child. I can see why it is so beloved! Somehow it transcends the tropes of middle grade fantasy, while still executing them flawlessly. Looking forward to the second book in the series. Better late than never, in this case.

Catching up on posting my May reads...
I was in the middle of rereading The Golden Compass last month when the news broke that Book of Dust 3 is happening soon, so now I think I'm going to reread all the Lyra books to prepare. I finished rereading this one on May 1 & finally read Lyra's Oxford, which actually comes after The Amber Spyglass but I didn't know that. I've read the main series before anyway, so it was fine. I love these books so much.

26 May-30 Jun 24 (audiobook)
Much better series to listen to with Trix on our commutes to school and activities. I particularly love this first book in the series which introduces Lyra and the concept of the animal daemon. It is a magical idea - having a speaking animal companion for your whole life. I wish Pullman kept the religious aspects out of it but I guess he is the modern day CS Lewis.
Regardless it is a wonderful book.

This is the book that makes me want to go to Svalbard and initially sparked my interest in Arctic exploration!

A book I have always wanted to read but haven‘t been able to finish.

With a fast-moving plot and deeply complex characters, Pullman crafts a deeply atmospheric and metaphor rich world. Pullman uses his own religious views to create fantastical inversions, all deeply tied to his personal interpretation of Paradise Lost and Christianity. I have SO many feelings about this book; I love the characters and worldbuilding, even if I don't agree with Pullman's religious convictions.

Update: I managed to read all of part 1! Starting part 2. Perhaps my reading slump is gone

I re-read this via audiobook from BorrowBox,
I enjoyed it, so to listen to the rest and
then I can listen to lovely Michael Sheen read The Book of Dust books 😍
Read for reading challenges.
4/5
I enjoyed reading this the first time I read it too. 4 ⭐

Was watching the TV series His Dark Materials and now I'm also rereading the books. I'm on season 2 and I really like this adaptation.
Maybe young adult books are not so bad. I will be reading this trilogy
edit months later: maybe young adult books are not so bad but this trilogy does not prove this sorry it's really messed up

As seen in the wild. Did you know the UK version of The Golden Compass has a different title? I didn't until today.

So, I finally finished it again. It‘s an amazing read and one that I can do slowly. I‘ll be picking up Lyra‘s adventures in book 2 here soon.

I‘m currently working my work my way through the book still. It normally doesn‘t take this long, but life. It keeps me busy. ❤️
Finally listening to “The Golden Compass” and it‘s so good! Not sure why it took me so long to listen, but glad I did!

Next book to start is an oldie, but I wanted to re-read before going to the next two. ❤️ I won‘t watch the show until I finish, soooooooo…. Gotta finish it. 😁

First thing that came to my mind with #Lights was the first book in the excellent ‘His Dark Materials‘ Trilogy by. Philip Pullman and the start of Lyra‘s journey. This book was also published under the title of The Golden Compass. Definitely divine!

Day 178.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.

It‘s a celebration of the sad & beautiful moments that take you from childhood to being an adult. The adventure is captivating and the theme of institutional power unchecked resonates. Lyra uncovers mysteries around her while navigating her way towards being the adult her world needs.

Another classic I should have read earlier. I love Lyra and this magical, complex world Pullman concocted. Pure genius! The audiobook was brilliant.

Day 24: Close up
I pick the Golden compass by Philip Pullman. These are some of the best books. 🐻🦊🦎❄🐿🔪

Brilliant. A wonderful adventure story about a girl who hates her parents, a mother who loves her dearly, and a father who just wants to kill God.

📚 The Golden Compass - 75% done. Loving this one too. I watched the first season of the show, so I know what to expect.
🎧 The Knockout Queen- up next. Reading it because of Litsy, so let's see if I actually like it.
Initially found this quite complicated and hard to understand, but I was soon drawn in. Definitely recommend if you enjoy reading fantasy.

Lyra finds herself on an adventure to the north to discover what is dust.

Making good progress in the tagged book. It's sooo good 👍☕️
The book is hiding my child playing with a hairdryer; yes, I'm watching him like a hawk 😂

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.
Day 247
Books in a series will be posted together, instead of individual posts for each.
