Ask Again, Yes
Ask Again, Yes: A Novel | Mary Beth Keane
A profoundly moving novel about two neighboring families in a suburban town, the friendship between their children, a tragedy that reverberates over four decades, and the power of forgiveness. Francis Gleeson and Brian Stanhope are two NYPD rookies assigned to the same Bronx precinct in 1973. They arent close friends on the job, but end up living next door to each other outside the city. What goes on behind closed doors in both housesthe loneliness of Franciss wife, Lena, and the instability of Brians wife, Anne, sets the stage for the stunning events to come. Ask Again, Yes by award-winning author Mary Beth Keane, is a beautifully moving exploration of the friendship and love that blossoms between Franciss youngest daughter, Kate, and Brians son, Peter, who are born six months apart. In the spring of Kate and Peters eighth grade year a violent event divides the neighbors, the Stanhopes are forced to move away, and the children are forbidden to have any further contact. But Kate and Peter find a way back to each other, and their relationship is tested by the echoes from their past. Ask Again, Yes reveals how the events of childhood look different when reexamined from the distance of adulthoodvillains lose their menace, and those who appeared innocent seem less so. Kate and Peters love story is marked by tenderness, generosity, and grace. I devoured this astonishing tale of two families linked by chance, love, and tragedy. Mary Beth Keane gives us characters so complex and alive that I find myself still thinking of them days after turning the final page. A must-read. J. Courtney Sullivan, author of Saints for All Occasions Mary Beth Keane is at the height of her powers in this novel about the sacrifices we make when we choose to build a life with someone. In Ask Again, Yes Keane tells a story about the fragility of happiness, the violence lurking beneath everyday life, and, ultimately, the power of love. If youve ever loved someone beyond reason, you will love this wise, tender, and beautiful book. Eleanor Henderson, author of Ten Thousand Saints

I found myself unable to stop reading and finished in 6 days. The story follows two families after a shocking tragedy. The development of the characters makes you love them and hate them depending on the scene. It was beautifully written in my opinion. I wish more was placed to signify some time passing instead of jumping time periods the way it did. Otherwise good read.

A really good slow-burn character study. As per usual, I started this book knowing nothing about it. I was quickly invested in the story of these two families over 40+ years. I liked the characters, the writing style, and the frank treatment of major events in their lives. I would have liked more detail about Peter and Kate when they met again through their early life together, rather than the fast-forward treatment, but still good.

I kept thinking the book title had something to do with a marraige proposal or some deep dark question that had to be asked...but in the end it was simply about lives intersecting. The questions and answers or lack of answers that often shape our lives despite ourselves.

I‘ve started reading my books with the jacket off. It‘s liberating. I lent this book to a friend and there‘s a tiny bit of damage. No mind, though. Life‘s too short to get bent out of shape about that 🤓💯

Another 5 ⭐️ read for me for 2020! I am so excited that I heard about this book via the What Should I Read Next podcast. It delivered everything promised including layers and layers of character development, intense look at humankind and forgiveness as well as how a huge life altering event can affect everyone‘s lives. The transitions between POVs and times were seamless! This book really made me think and feel!

I'm re-posting this review--I recently finished re-reading Ask Again, Yes in preparation for our upcoming Unabridged Book Club episode and was, once again, blown away (maybe more than I was the first time!). I can‘t wait for you to hear our discussion on Unabridged about this brilliant book. ⠀

Have you read Ask Again, Yes? What‘s a book for you that stands up to re-reading?⠀

******

Mary Beth Keane's Ask Again, Yes is a deeply powerful novel.

UnabridgedPod There were moments that, for me, were superficially emotional--events that are both joyful or sorrowful abound, in the way that every day holds joys and sorrows. But the deepest parts of the book are beyond those superficial emotions, beyond the easy tears that can be brought forth through any emotionally manipulative book. Keane explores the intertwined lives of two families. ⬇️ 2mo
UnabridgedPod They're initially brought together by the first generation's fathers, colleagues on the New York police force who move their families to the same suburb as neighbors. As the lives of these families grow together, they rise and fall together as well, driven by their time and its inclination to hide weakness and excuse anomalous behavior. I don't want to give anything away, so my summary will stop there . . . ⬇️ 2mo
UnabridgedPod but it's not in the novel's events that the strength of the book lies. Instead, it's in our deep understanding of these subtle, realistically inconsistent characters. One of my favorite reads of the year so far. 2mo

I know some people have complained that this book appears to lack a plot, but it‘s a pick for me. I like character-driven novels where you can see the evolution of relationships and personalities over time. I also thought the dialogue and actions were realistic to the characterizations. Not every book can have a happy ending – just like life. Well done.

Amiable @ljuliel You might like this one, if you haven't already read it. The characters are real--flaws and all. Not a thriller. 2mo

Between a pick and a so-so for me, this is a story of life intersections, forgiveness, mental illness, and alcoholism. Aside from one major plot point, it is more character driven than plot driven and there are a lot of issues raised in the pages. Dysfunctional family novel fans will like this one. My photos of pages from the book have SPOILERS. What a great book, spanning 40 years of two families who live next door and both husbands are police officers originally from Ireland. I just read an interview with the author and she said that basically adults are the same people they were as children. We get to know Kate and Peter as young children and adults. Serious mental illness and child neglect shape a characters present and future life.

I‘m torn between a pick and so-so. The characters are well-fleshed out and great writing. I can enjoy slow-paced character driven novels but this one felt a little too slow for me. Perhaps more my mood. I just hope it has not out me out the mood for other family drama stories: Ann Patchett‘s new novel Dutch House or An American Marriage which I‘m supposed to read for a book club in a month!

Christine I liked but didn‘t love this one, but I loved the other two you mentioned! Hope the same is true for you. 🙂 4mo
