Going Bovine
Going Bovine | Libba Bray
Can Cameron find what hes looking for? All 16-year-old Cameron wants is to get through high schooland life in generalwith a minimum of effort. Its not a lot to ask. But thats before hes given some bad news: hes sick and hes going to die. Which totally sucks. Hope arrives in the winged form of Dulcie, a loopy punk angel/possible hallucination with a bad sugar habit. She tells Cam there is a cureif hes willing to go in search of it. With the help of a death-obsessed, video-gaming dwarf and a yard gnome, Cam sets off on the mother of all road trips through a twisted America into the heart of what matters most. From the Hardcover edition.

On this week‘s episode of my book podcast, Carlyn Greenwald and I dive into one of the most gloriously bizarre books that either of us have ever read, GOING BOVINE. If you don‘t have a frame of reference for this Printz winner, don‘t worry about it… I‘m still not 100% sure I know what happened! 😂 Carlyn and I break it down together. 🐮 Listen at the link in my bio!

A Spindle Splintered meets Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I'm very glad I didn't know anything about this book before I started it. Start, middle and end are different than I thought, and I think it will stay with me longer because of that. I have a feeling it might have had a greater impact if I had read it at the intended audience age: teenager. Definitely look up content warnings.

I love that moment in reading when you come across a thought or description that you realize you've needed/perfectly matches what you've always wanted to say. "Shellacked", perfect!

Ah, formal education. Can't say I miss it. Especially since it put me into a reading slump only recently recovered from.

I have over 200 unread books on my kindle but with so many new releases that excite me every year I don‘t know when I will ever read most of them. I want to read all of them and none of them! Does anyone else have a similar problem?!?!

TheSpineView Yes!😋 5y
Book_ish @TheSpineView glad to know it‘s not just me. Maybe we should start a support group 🤣 5y

sarahs.thoughts.on.books So much this, but more of an issue with real books then ebooks 5y
TheSpineView @Book_ish I don't think that would help me!! 🤪 5y
Book_ish @essayareayaitch I don‘t have that issue as much with physical books because I don‘t buy them unless I REALLY want to read them like right now! I have an amazing library where I can get pretty much any book under the sun so I mostly use that. But when an ebook goes on sale for $0.99 🤷🏽‍♀️ lol (edited) 5y

Looking for a book with #surrealism was a little difficult. But this one was the third that came up on a Libby search. I like Bray and her writing a lot. This book was weird and had no logic, but in a purposeful way. Not my jam but I understood what it was going for. #halfbloodbingo

Day 8: Award winning Author #agameoffavorites
In 2010, Libba Bray won the Prints award for Going Bovine, a quirky, crazy book about a boy with mad cow disease. It isn't my favorite of her books, but it is a lot of fun, and it is very odd, which is always enjoyable. I do love her! Fun fact: for research, she dressed up in a cow suit and walked around New York 😋

Now the characters have joined company with a Viking lawn gnome whose original language is Old Norse, because he‘s actually a Norse god in disguise. Of course. 😂

This book is getting VERY weird. I‘m about one-third through, and waiting for the other shoe to drop. Also, I‘m pretty sure there‘s going to be a sad/heartbreaking ending, and I‘m not sure I‘m up for that. 😟

I haven't read it, but I'm certainly intrigued by Bray's book. Described as a #retelling of Don Quixote.

I just spent almost if not more than an hr and a half trying to figure this sh*t out!!!! Omfg. The app wouldn't download the original e-book download from my library. Million years later. Realize I can rent a different copy from my region. Or at least try to and voila! The font selection is awful though. Sigh. Now for snacks and reading. Hope this sucker was worth it. In a bit of a slump the last bit. #holymoly #muchlove #bookproblems

Ended with almost 19 hours read which is pretty good considering the family stuff that came up today that prevented me from completing my full 24. Life has been too stressful for me lately to give myself a hard time about it so I'm happy to have participated and read so much! Thanks to the lovely organizers and all the participants for the fun weekend! 💓💓#24in48

VanChocStrawberry 19 hours is GREAT. What do you think of Going Bovine? 7y

This story was very exciting and a page turner. However, be prepared to cry at the end. I was not expecting the twist that happened. I highly recommend this.

Not taking very good pictures today. Oh well. But day one of #17booklove and an #authorIlove .. Libba Bray! Not the only one, but most impressive collection, I think. I started with Going Bovine... Which is way different from her other books.

Just realized that I can't post pics of two of my #bookmail packages because they're gifts and #noppostonsundays books! However, this stack of books I ordered from Book Outlet came in this weekend and I'm so excited! And rapidly running out of space to put my books (even with multiple bookshelves and nightstands). 😬 I think this will be my last bookish order until after the holidays. Well I'll try at least. 😆

Yamich49 @emmanoble Emma I got my #nopostonsundays package today! Thanks for the goodies- I love them! ❤️ 7y

LeahBergen 😂😂Sorry! Oh, and I was wrong - it's actually 30% off. 😂 7y
Yamich49 @LeahBergen 😂😂 You are such a bad influence! I may have spent entirely too much money buying books this morning. 👀 SUCH GOOD DEALS THOUGH! 7y
LeahBergen @Yamich49 I restrained myself and only ordered 7. 😂 How many did you get? 7y
Yamich49 @LeahBergen Ummm....I may have ordered 19. 😬 But....They were on sale! 😳 Absolutely no more book buying for me for the rest of the year! 😂😂 7y
LeahBergen @Yamich49 I just laughed SO LOUDLY in my silent house!!! 😂😂😂 7y

Sharply written, compelling tale of learning to deal with mortality. Also, there is a talking garden gnome.

Definitely Libba Bray's strangest book (which is saying something), but also her most heartfelt.

BekahB Libba Bray's books have been on my mind recently. I've only read Beauty Queens and I've been meaning to start The Diviners, but this one has always interested me. I may have to find a copy. 8y

This book was a perfect example of why I like book bingo! I had never heard of it, probably would never have heard of it but I needed a retelling of a classic. I searched some lists and found this listed as a retelling of ,Don Quixote, thought that could be interesting and boy was it ^_^
