The Institute
The Institute | Stephen King
Deep in the woods of Maine, there is a dark state facility where kids, abducted from across the United States, are incarcerated. In the Institute they are subjected to a series of tests and procedures meant to combine their exceptional gifts - telepathy, telekinesis - for concentrated effect. Luke Ellis is the latest recruit. He's just a regular 12-year-old, except he's not just smart, he's super-smart. And he has another gift which the Institute wants to use... Far away in a small town in South Carolina, former cop Tim Jamieson has taken a job working for the local Sherriff. He's basically just walking the beat. But he's about to take on the biggest case of his career. Back in the Institute's downtrodden playground and corridors where posters advertise 'just another day in paradise', Luke, his friend Kalisha and the other kids are in no doubt that they are prisoners, not guests. And there is no hope of escape. But great events can turn on small hinges and Luke is about to team up with a new, even younger recruit, Avery Dixon, whose ability to read minds is off the scale. While the Institute may want to harness their powers for covert ends, the combined intelligence of Luke and Avery is beyond anything that even those who run the experiments - even the infamous Mrs Sigsby - suspect. Thrilling, suspenseful, heartbreaking, THE INSTITUTE is a stunning novel of childhood betrayed and hope regained.

Another excellent page-turner from SK! My only complaint is that it‘s just a bit too dang long, but that‘s nothing new. I‘m sure this will be made into a movie at some point and I‘m looking forward to seeing what they do with it. 4⭐️

Up next is this chunkster. I‘m a little nervous because it‘s been a while since I‘ve read a bigger book. It‘s been in my head that I need to read as many books as possible so I‘ve been sticking to smaller ones.

LaurensLibrary I'm like that, too. I have a couple really big chunksters that I need to get to but every time I look at them I think "Lord, that is going to take forever..." I need to just suck it up and power through them! 5d

This was my very first read by King. It definitely won‘t be my last!
The Institute kept me wanting to read more the entire book!

It was a bit slow throughout, however the build up was totally worth it!
I really hope they turn this book into a movie!

LoverOfLearning To be honest I have never read a Steven King book... what would be a good starting book that's not too long? 2w
teebe Haven‘t read this one but I highly recommend his short stories 2w
Alora @LoverOfLearning @teebe Ouhhh I will try his short stories! Thanks! I‘ve heard good things about Carrie, Firestarter, 11.22.63, Lisey‘s story. This was my first read by him @LoverOfLearning , it was a long one! Lol longest book I‘ve read. Took me 19 hours to read it all, but I was reading slow to enjoy it. 2w
LoverOfLearning @Alora great I will check one of those out! 2w
Rachel.Rencher I definitely like his newer work, and some of his older work. Sometimes his older books can be a grind to get through! 2w
Alora @Rachel.Rencher What are a few of your favourites?! He has so many I‘m not even sure where to begin besides the few popular ones I know about 2w
Rachel.Rencher @Alora 11/22/63 is my absolute favorite. I love Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Shining, & Full Dark No Stars is a great collection. Misery was way too gruesome for me, Cujo was okay I thought but not very scary, and the Gunslinger series was written while he was still a drug addict I'm pretty sure, and it shows. 🤣 2w
Alora @Rachel.Rencher Thanks for the recommendations! I‘ll check them out :) I forgot about Shawshank and The Green Mile! 😱 2w
MrBook 😁👏🏻🥳 Litsy‘s resident Stephen King expert is @HotMessJess . My first SK book was “The Eyes of the Dragon” read when I was ~12. My favorite is “It”, but that‘s a cranium-cracker 😆🙈. Also thoroughly enjoyed “11/22/63”, “Needful Things”, and “Salem‘s Lot”. “Pet Sematary” is very good. Keep in mind, nearly all of his books take place in the same “universe”, so as you read more, you find more Easter eggs. 😁. @LoverOfLearning @Alora (edited) 2w
HotMessJess @MrBook I am always so honored! 🥳🥳🥳 2w

HotMessJess @mrbook good thing I‘ve been reading a lot more now that our little guy is grown up a bit. Also @alora The Stand! One of his absolute bests! 2w
Alora @HotMessJess Yes that is on my tbr list very soon! 😍 thank you! Doctor sleep is the 2nd to this one correct? Ohhh no thats The Shining. I‘ve watched all of the movies, so I have a hard time reading a book if I‘ve seen the movie already. But I‘ll make an exception for him lol. 2w

I love Stephen King. His writing has some flaws, but he knows how to tell a solid story and build a world that envelops you. The Institute runs experiments on children, and the mystery isn‘t where the children‘s abilities come from, but why adults would consent to do such evil things. The ending seems to be setting up a sequel or a series. If so, I will be there for the next book.

This quote sums everything about the book. Terrific, heart-wrenching story of children with psychic abilities taking a stand against the forces that kidnapped them. It's also more than that. One of my favorite Indian comics whose sets often focus on political commentary said how a politician he encountered told him to 'stick to comedy and leave the politics to us,' ⬇️

rohit-sawant and he retorted that he had but then *they* engaged in comedy (Sounds a lot funnier in Hindi 😄), and it's sort of similar in the present case, in that you have real life horrors competing with the fictional ones King crafted in The Institute during the writing of it and the resulting verisimilitude borders on a blood-boiling realism. 2w
rohit-sawant But amidst all the bleakness is warmth and friendship and courage. The bond between the kids was very much reminiscent of IT. The ending was sublime, emotional charged to a spark-spitting degree with that SK cocktail of terror, exhilaration, wonder and love, and some profound remarks, simply said. 2w
BarbaraBB Fab review. I‘m no fan of SK and promised myself no more SK after The Outsider but I must say I‘m tempted to read this one. 2w

"It came to him, with the force of a revelation, that you had to have been imprisoned to fully understand what freedom was."

A horrifying book, but not in the same vein of terror in which most of King's novels are written. There weren't any points where I was kept awake at night but the trauma experienced by the children makes your skin crawl in an entirely different way. The story has a sci-fi feel to it with the telekinesis & telepathy.

Definitely going to read The Shining and Doctor Sleep. I‘ve seen a lot of the movies, and I have a weird pet peeve that I don‘t really like reading a book if I‘ve already seen the movie. I know books are way better...but it just seems like I‘m reading a story I already know. 1mo
JoyBlue I read The Shining as a teen and refused to read any more of his books for a long time. But, somehow, someone convinced me to read Joyland, and someone else suggested The Eyes of the Dragon, and then I chose to read The Institute, and I gave each of those ⭐⭐ ⭐ ⭐ (which is unusual for me—I'm pretty stingy with stars!). So, now I'm a selective Stephen King fan. 😉 1mo
Alora @JoyBlue “Selective” Haha! I love that! The Shining is on my tbr! I‘ve never heard of the others that you mentioned. 1mo
JoyBlue @Alora I highly recommend them! I'm a scaredy cat, so straight-up horror isn't really in my wheelhouse. I do, however, read a lot of murder mysteries and thrillers. Not sure how I handle those. I'm an enigma, I guess. 😂 1mo
Linsy I really like that cover 4w
Alora @Linsy I know! It‘s so pretty 😍 4w

I finally had time today to finish this one. Wow! Excellent example of how great King is at weaving a wonderful story that leaves you feeling like you've lost a friend once you turn the last page. It is reminiscent of Firestarter, which made me like it more. 💚

This makes book 10 for #screamathon. @4thhouseontheleft

4thhouseontheleft Fire starter is one of my favorites, so good to know! 1mo
AmyG I am almost halfway through. Agree....he is such a good storyteller. I am trying to savor this book. And I keep picturing the kids as the Stranger Things kids....🤣 1mo

Getting a few chapters in at lunch. Feeling a bit nauseated thinking about these kids being my kids. But really, nothing more compelling a read as a person in a situation that seems helpless.. definitely need to see them NOT being helpless. Is that vague enough? Lol
