Haven‘t returned to Tortall in a while, so I‘ve been reading Alanna as my before bed book. The Tortall books were just hugely impactful for me in my tweens, and I still love them. Gotta say though, I think when I replaced them a few years back I got the worst covers (on the left)- the older ones and the current ones that I‘ve seen both look better. She looks a little possessed 😅 contents are still good though.

Clare-Dragonfly I read them as my before bed books recently too! Honestly the possessed look isn‘t entirely inaccurate… 😂 3mo

I recently brought a bunch of children's books from my parent's huse. I don't recall reading this series when I was a child. Also checking if it's something for my 8yo.

I‘ve loved these books for my whole life and upon my latest reread the internalized sexism didn‘t bother me nearly as much as when I was in my late teens. I love this series so much because it‘s such a lovely way to introduce you to all the key players in tortall as children 💙💚💜

Alanna: The First Adventure was written by Tamora Pierce in 1983. This is a wonderful fantasy book about an adventurous girl who wants to train as a knight so she swaps places with her twin brother. This book is honored with the Margaret A. Edwards Award. Great read!

Listening to the audiobook of this all-time childhood favorite was just magical and nostalgic and satisfying. This series-starter embodies so many favorite fantasy tropes—the strong female character, a girl disguised as a boy, training to be a knight, friends with the crown prince and the king of thieves, who fights her magical powers—AND representation of puberty and menstruation—sign me up! This book will always be my treasured friend.

underground_bks My one caveat is that this was written in the 80s and is not trans-inclusive. I‘d love to see it edited to be more sensitive—it would be easily accomplished. 3y

I first came across this series at around the time the books were being written and I‘d always wanted to be a knight so they appealed to me. So now (nostalgia) I‘ve collected this first quartet for my own shelves in the same binding style. Time to start re-reading it!
🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

BehindthePages I had so much fun reading these in middle school! 3y
humouress @BehindthePages So did I (though I was slightly older) 3y
humouress Apparently this quartet was originally written as a single book for adults but Pierce was advised to resubmit it as a series for children. Well, it worked! though I am curious to know what the original was like 3y

relistening to this book and it explains a lot of why I am who I am today. Alanna is the original female MC that is sick of the patriarchy and shoves it back in the faces of all the men in her life. Such a strong character, reading this makes me feel like I can do anything. She is the blueprint.

I am listening to this book I read once as a child, partly to listen to a podcast about the series and partially to figure out why I didn't take to the books as a kid, and I at least have a grasp of the second part. I've always been interested in gender fluidity/fuckery, but this book pushes back on that So Much. I know it's of its time and that the author has different since, but it feels like walking into a brick wall.

khooliha Like, don't change how the gods made you?? So much girl power fiction from when I was young inadvertently (or totally on purpose) is so cisnormative. I'm so tired lately. 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Many of the best selling teen fantasy authors, Maas, Bardugo, Nix, etc., credit Pierce as a groundbreaker for the “strong female protagonist” and paving the way for so many stories I love.
This book was first published in 1983 & being around Narnia reading level, this isn‘t usually what I read, but I‘m enjoying going to the roots of a favorite genre, and I will finish this 4 book series & will look into the other series set it Tortall.

It‘s been years but I‘ve found myself in the midst of a reread binge - so going back to Tortall seemed like an obvious choice. I love this book! From Alanna training in secret to defeat her bully to her getting her period, freaking out and breaking into George‘s apartment to a certain revealing incident in the Black City. I‘m hoping the rest of the series holds up!

I was in need of a comfort read so I dove back into the world of Tortall. I love these books so much! In my opinion, modern YA can‘t even compare to Tamora Pierce‘s books.

This book is even more precious to me now because it is signed by Tamora.

I forgot to take a photo. My first Tamora Pierce, loved it. It‘s a book of a certain type: reminds me of the Prydian chronicles, or of Narnia. Short and to the point. But fabulous. Looking forward to the others. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I looooved this book. I wish I had known about Alanna when I was a tween! I love her boldness and the way she makes a goal for herself and sticks with it, even though it is incredibly hard. And I can‘t tell you guys how much I appreciate that Ms. Pierce wrote some of Alanna‘s coming-of-age stuff into the story: how her body is changing as she grows into a teenager 🙌🏻

I‘m excited for more of this series-I want to see Alanna achieve her big goal!

MarriedtoMrT I finally read this a few years ago and fell in love as well! My goal is to make it through all the Tortall quartets. I loved the next set, too, about Daine. Enjoy! 6y

I can‘t believe I‘ve never read this series before!!

Late last night, I wanted a great fantasy story, so I searched my shelves for something similar to Summers at Castle Auburn by Sharon Shinn which I LOVED. This one is just a little bit different but I‘m flying thru it and oh man, I sooo wish I‘d read it as a tween.

Have any of you read the Song of the Lioness books?

Beachesnbooks Looove Tamora Pierce! Read these books over & over when I was younger. Alanna is such a great heroine. 6y

Claire Fallon from HuffPost and the Here to Make Friends podcast joins me to discuss the first book in the series, Alanna: The First Adventure, which raises questions of identity, gender, conformity, and whether or not violet eyes occur in nature... and we talk about it ALL, plus my love for Mulan. I really enjoyed this, my first foray into the world of Tortall. Alanna/Alan defies her father to become the knight she knows she is meant to be. I like her strong intuition & how she follows through to do what she feels is right. She‘s not gonna let anyone hold her back or determine her identity & she‘s building a support network to support the legend you can already see developing.

2. Its a three way tie between Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Little Mermaid, and Major League 😂

A tornado hit our city and our schools are closed. Everyone is okay but there is a lot of destruction and power outages. They haven't organized any support or volunteer centers yet so Since I can't work or volunteer, of course I should read instead! I was inspired by the quality of Tempests and Slaughter to start from the beginning of this world. Audio talent is not as good but still enjoying it!

Man, this was actually pretty fantatistic! I loved Alanna, and how ambitious she was. I loved the side characters, too. Some of them weren't super developed, but it's a short book and early #YA, so I forgive it. So, now, I have to read everything #tamorapierce has ever written. I already started book 2. Also, the #audiobook is super short, so it's easy to listen to. I liked the narrator, which can make or break an audiobook.

I have a confession-I've never read #tamorapierce. I read an ARC of Tempests and Slaughter and it was so good that I knew I finally had to start reading about this world. So I'm listening to #Alanna on audio, and I hope it's everything I've heard it is.

#audiobooks #newseries #bookconfessions #tortalla #

sloanghost Oh Alanna! My middle school jam was The Immortals (the series where Numair makes his adult appearance). Both quartets have definitely aged but imho they're still pretty darn good. And I think Circle of Magic has held up best to the ravages of time and cultural shift. 7y
jwashreads @sloanghost Yeah, I always worry when I start something as an adult that I should have read as a teen, because the genre has evolved since then. For instance, I read Eragon last year and just couldn't get into it. 7y
