This was a beautiful, bittersweet, and heart-wrenching story about friendship and the lengths one would go to keep it. The chapters were extremely short, one to four pages max, which made for a quick read, but there was a surprising amount of development within them. This book told August's view of the events, while the sequel, The Legend of the Golden Raven, tells Jack's side.

A rated this a 4 stars. It was really good and I love that we saw the world that was built in mental health illness, if that makes sense. There were a few frustrating moments that made me feel not really into it at times. But overall it was great.

Yesterday I finished reading The Wicker King by K. Ancrum.

August‘s best friend, Jack, sees another world. Supernatural creatures, medieval buildings, magical objects. August sees nothing. He worries about Jack, but nonetheless agrees to aid him in completing ‘a very important quest to fulfill a prophecy.‘

This story is trippy, tragic, funny, fast-paced—and it‘s all told in short, sharp chapters. 👍👍

4 ⭐
This book is a look at two teen boys, August and Jack, as they descend into madness. You know this from the very beginning because as of page five you know one of them is in an asylum. The story takes you through how August got there.

This book was fantastic. It was hard, but it was worth reading, and a topic not readily found in many YA books.

TW: Non-graphic sex, mental instability

This book is so hard to describe and yet so compelling. The story of two boys, one with visions of another world and one trying to hold everything together for the both of them.
Content note: contains codependency, neglectful parenting, mental health trauma, institutionalization.

This book put me through it. I don't know if it portrayed this disorder accurately (not going to say what is going on because spoilers), but it did something well. An intense, co-dependent friendship/relationship between two high school boys turns dark (literally the pages get darker as the story goes on) as one of them begins experiencing more and more intense hallucinations. 5 stars.

That was lovely. 1st, there was the amazing characterization — Jack & August just leapt off the page with each sentence. 2nd, there was the absolutely stellar prose, which often had me melting. The plot felt a bit winding & unresolved, but the gorgeousness of the telling more than made up for it! An amazing story about friendship & love, and how far you can (or should be) willing to go for the one you can‘t live without. ★★★★☆. First for #24in48!

Gosh, apart from the EXCELLENT writing, the design of this book is incredible — as the book opens with a fire, each page is made to look as if it‘s getting increasingly charred, before becoming completely black for the last section. It‘s creating this eerie mood that I love! 😍 #24in48

Very unique book. It‘s a little out of my normal comfort zone but I thought it was very good. I assumed from the title that it was fantasy. It‘s a story of parental neglect, friendship, and mental illness. I think I enjoyed it so much because I didn‘t know anything about it. Thanks #dragonsandteabookclub

What a beautifully unique and unsettling book! This was a really interesting read and the book itself is so aesthetically pleasing, but my favorite part by far was the author‘s note at the end. The words for why Ancrum wrote this, who they wrote it for, and why it is important were so eloquent and meaningful.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Good book. It was a fast read. As a mother though I kept thinking how in the world is an adult not stepping in! How is there no help from anyone! And sadly, that‘s just the reality for some kids. Absent parents and adults who turn the other way. I was mostly happy with the ending, I just wish August would have tried harder to accept the help.

#currentlyreading but debating dnfing at this point. Reading this relationship is making me sick to my stomach and it‘s SO queer bait-y...”he thought about jacks fingers on the back of his neck and tasted a bit of shame.” The author can‘t even make this a queer relationship and it‘s just so toxic and stomach churny. Ugh. #ya

I‘m trying hard to process my feelings about The Wicker King. I really liked the design concept and the way the book is laid out is really pretty. The book also covers co-dependency in a way I‘ve never really read before.

It‘s between a Pick and So-So. Definitely worth the read—but definitely for a niche audience.
