The Bone Houses
The Bone Houses | Emily Lloyd-Jones
Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Sky in the Deep in this bewitching, historical horror novel, perfect for fans of Holly Black and V.E. Schwab. Seventeen-year-old Aderyn ("Ryn") only cares about two things: her family and her family's graveyard. And right now, both are in dire straits. Since the death of their parents, Ryn and her siblings have been scraping together a meager existence as gravediggers in the remote village of Colbren, which sits at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to the fae. The problem with being a gravedigger in Colbren, though, is that the dead don't always stay dead. The risen corpses are known as "bone houses," and legend says that they're the result of a decades-old curse. When Ellis, an apprentice mapmaker with a mysterious past, arrives in town, the bone houses attack with new ferocity. What is it that draws them near? And more importantly, how can they be stopped for good? Together, Ellis and Ryn embark on a journey that will take them into the heart of the mountains, where they will have to face both the curse and the deeply-buried truths about themselves. Equal parts classic horror novel and original fairytale, The Bone Houses will have you spellbound from the very first page.

SO GOOD. I highly recommend this book. Lloyd-Jones crafted the wonderful type of YA fantasy novel that seeps through your skin and into your bones (hah!) and manifests itself in your dreams. I powered through this book in just a few busy days and my head was turning the whole time with the what-ifs and possibilities of what would happen!

4thhouseontheleft I loved this book too! 5d

A not too dark but a little bit dark fairytale set in medieval era wales. Ryn, the main character, is brave and brash and stubborn. She saves the day again and agin. Ellis is more of a mystery but proves himself to be tough. I really enjoyed this book.

Wanting to power through this book so I can immerse myself in Christmas-y romance books, and also wanting to take my time to absorb the brilliance of the world Emily Lloyd-Jones has created- I guess it's a good thing I can't put this down?

I've found a compromise to my earlier dilemma, meant to be reading The Bone Houses but wanting to read a light-hearted romance. Why not do both at the same time? I am #currentlyreading these two books which is HUGE for me, since I'm usually a literary monogamist and only read one book at a time. Wish me luck!

I really enjoyed this book. Was a nice read without having to think too much or piece together the meaning of the world. I think it would be great for young readers, as well. Just enough detail to paint the scene without getting bogged down too much. Overall, a good, easy read.

I actually picked this up because @4thhouseontheleft's review mentioned this was a zombie novel that wasn't too zombie-spooky (my words, not hers) and contained a zombie goat.

17 yr old Aderyn (Ryn) is a gravedigger who only cares about two things: her siblings and her family‘s graveyard. But people aren‘t staying dead and buried. The magic from the forest which was once the fae‘s home is waking up the dead.

I really enjoyed this book. It was really refreshing to read a story about a gravedigger that included the fae. I also loved that it doesn‘t have to be a series. The story is wonderful all on it own.

4/5 ⭐ This was so good! Exciting, not scary but with some great adventure moments. Great characters, lovely writing, fun amd sweet story. And I totally got a Lloyd Alexander / Chronicles of Prydain vibe. I loved those books as a kid, so that was a nice bonus!

Read this one in October. A perfect Halloween read! I don't read zombie books, and didn't really think zombies while reading this one. But I guess that's what you could say these bone houses were. Loved the two main characters, a gravedigger trying to keep her family together in their home, and a wandering mapmaker. Together, they journey through this forest where dead things come alive after dark. 👇

tracey38 Have to say, I loved the goat! This book had some definite creepy scenes! 1mo

What I do on public holidays should be well-known by now. I rearrange furniture. Since our fireplace had to go (landlord decided to get rid of the chimney, because the attic is turned into two flats), I decided to move the bookshelf from my room into the living room.

A few more items of furniture were moved around and now we've got 6 empty cubby holes. We'll probably fill them with books on no time.

#audiobook kept me company

Freespirit I am a compulsive furniture position changer also😄 1mo

The risen dead, bone houses, have also been held back by the boundaries of the forest. Something about the curse has shifted and now the dead are crossing the boundary.

This was between a pick and a so-so for me. I enjoyed the world building, but I didn‘t find myself caring as much about the characters.

This isn‘t a horror story. It‘s about loss, life, death, and memory told in a bit of a “dark fairytale” type fashion. That said, the best word I can use to describe this book is “thoughtful”. Made me think and pulled at my heartstrings. It is the perfect read for this time of year because, while subtly “creepy”, there‘s something oddly “cozy” about it. Also, beautifully written & atmospheric. An October must-read ❤️🎃
