A quick, easy, and real read about an autistic comic who discusses growing up and breaking into comedy as a person with autism. McCreary does a great job shedding light on his life with autism, a conversation I feel we don't see much in books.

This memoir by a stand-up comedian with autism is light, quick, enjoyable, and real. It‘s a great way for Michael to use his humor to shed light on a very vast and misconstrued diagnosis.

Hilarious book. I read this everyday in the library. Good book to chill with your Starbucks frap. Autism isn‘t much of a good thing, but when a comedian is making fun of himself having it, it becomes an all time great.

Book 41 I listened to this book read by the author. A memoir about autism, written by a comedian. It's educational, funny, and, yet, very surface level. I am glad I listened to it, and I am curious to check out McCreary's comic work. 3.5 stars

This is the current #BigLibraryRead and I was glad I heard about it in time. I used the audio book as well as the ebook. Mostly listened while exercising and doing dishes, otherwise I read. I learned a few things and am appreciative McCreary is willing to share his story.

Enjoyed this memoir by a young man with autism. I work with a lot of families whose children have autism and he debunked many stereotypes about autism with a light touch and explained his own feelings well. He also provides a lot of info without if feeing like a lecture. Will be recommending this in particular to a student I am working with who his learning how to self-advocate. I think he will identify with the author‘s journey.

This was a quick, easy read with good information about autism and what it was like for the author growing up. I‘m off now to look him up on YouTube to watch with my 17 year old son, who is also on the spectrum.

I love participating in the Big Library Read. The idea that the entire nation has free access to the same book within a specific timeframe gives me all sorts of good feelings. This short memoir goes far to enable compassion and understanding to a person with a characteristic of autism.

Blaire I‘m listening to this one. It is fun to participate in something that everyone can join in on. 4y
jewright Where do you find this book? I would love to read it! 4y
marleed @Blaire I agree! 4y
marleed @jewright Do you have a library card? And do es that library have an online option for its patrons? If so you can download either the ebook or audio to your device. It is made available to everyone through 13April. I utilize Overdrive/Libby through a reciprocating library to my account. I opted for the audio and went on a beautiful walk with this yesterday. 4y

This book probably holds most interest for those who don‘t have much experience with/understanding of autism or youth with autism who want inspiration. I have an autistic nephew and have read extensively about autism, so little of his explanation of ASD was new to me. And it‘s not easy to write an engaging memoir when you are just 22 years old. That being said, I would jump at the chance to see him perform and think many would enjoy this book.

Question 4. Michael chooses to write about autism in a memoir- through his own personal story- rather than in an essay, reference manual, or self-help book. Why do you think he made this choice? What do you think are some of the benefits or drawbacks to writing memoir versus other forms of non-fiction?

ElizaMarie He mentions toward the beginning (maybe even the introduction of it) that this is his story. About his autism and stressed that its not a universal guide to all autism. I believe he meant to make this a human experience (adding humor) and tell his story the way he wanted to. A non-fiction book would have been inundated with facts/figures but not the heart of his story. The memoir format I believe is a perfect one for this type of story. 4y
saguarosally It seems that this matches his comedic persona. 4y
CrowCAH @ElizaMarie well put - the heart of the story. 4y

Do you like reading memoirs?
Are they typically in your realm of books to read?

Chrissyreadit It really depends on the memoir. 4y
CrowCAH @Chrissyreadit I agree. I‘ve been reading a couple more for a book club. The one book made her point, but wasn‘t uplifting. Not my cup-of-tea. 4y
ElizaMarie @Chrissyreadit I totally agree. I am not really a typical “memoir“ reader but I did enjoy this one :) I have read a few that I found interesting but again, depends on who it is about. 4y
CrowCAH @ElizaMarie same. If it‘s someone I like or cared about their onscreen characters, then I‘ll read their memoir. 4y

Question 3. In part one, Michael describes how being diagnosed as autistic changed his life, even though he didn‘t realize it at the time. Can you think of a life-changing moment or experience that you‘ve had? How did experience change you?

ElizaMarie Not to be too personal but having a trauma/assault history has really shaped who I am. I strive to assist those who have been faced with sexual assault and domestic violence. I volunteer to take those patients when we get them because (super horrifying but....) some of my colleagues have made comments such as “well she was out late what did she expect“ or “why doesn't she leave“. I feel because of my history I am a better advocate for these pts 4y
CrowCAH @ElizaMarie thanks for sharing. Yes, we all have traumatic events in our lives, some horrific while others are of a smaller nature, that shape us into who we are today. 4y

An excellent Own Voices insight into living with autism (obviously school is an absolute hellhole anyway but for neurodiverse kids or anyone who's a bit different it can be really crap) and the joys of finding your tribe. There's a lot of very helpful advice for both neurotypical people and people with ASD but, perhaps more importantly, it's really funny.I'm definitely going to check out his stand up. #BigLibraryRead #BLR2020 #autismawarenessday

Have you watched the modern show, featuring an autistic man as a surgeon doctor? If not, you should. The Good Doctor is a great heartwarming show!

https://abc.com/shows/the-good-doctor

ElizaMarie I have heard good things about this show but I haven't seen it. I am not crazy about hospital/medical dramas (I think because I am a nurse it is hard sometimes when they make ridiculous choices) 4y
CrowCAH @ElizaMarie ah yes I do understand, the realism factor. That is a slight issue with the show, but it‘s centered on characters who want to make a difference, so it balances. 4y
ElizaMarie @CrowCAH I will give it a shot (do you know if its streaming on Netflix of Hulu?) 4y

Question 1. How does the media portray people with ASD? Do you think these portrayals are accurate?

ElizaMarie I have seen a couple of shows with characters with ASD. I think the better shows use ASD as just one aspect of the patient's character (like a huge aspect but not the only thing this character is). ASD presents itself in so many ways (as the author mentions) and characters in the media should be fleshed out to be more believable. 4y
CrowCAH @ElizaMarie I agree. Autism is a range, so I feel we all have a little or a lot in us. 4y
