A Series of Unfortunate Events #12: The Penultimate Peril | Lemony Snicket
44 posts | 252 read | 28 to read
Lemony Snicket returns with the last book before the last book of his bestselling Series of Unfortunate Events. Scream and run away before the secrets of the series are revealed! Very little is known about Lemony Snicket and A Series of Unfortunate Events. What we do know is contained in the following brief list: o The books have inexplicably sold millions and millions of copies worldwide o People in more than 40 countries are consumed by consuming Snicket o The movie was as sad as the books, if not more so o Like unrefrigerated butter and fungus, the popularity of these books keeps spreading Even less is known about book the twelfth in this alarming phenomenon. What we do know is contained in the following brief list: o In this book, things only get worse o Count Olaf is still evil o The Baudelaire orphans do not win a contest o The title begins with the word, ?The? Sometimes, ignorance is bliss. Ages 10+

The Baudelaire siblings find themselves at the last safe place and must observe the people gathering to decide if they are villains or volunteers. But they come to realize that things are not always so black and white.
This has always been my favorite installment of the series. The Hotel Denouement is such a fun setting, with a ridiculous organization system, and many previous characters make reappearances to help or hinder the children's task.

I actually finished the series this morning, but I am sure today will not be the last time my meals will be influenced by the series. There‘s got to be a Baudelaire cookbook right? 😂 Also the Challenge Butter dessert spreads are probably the best thing to come from the butter board trend. Tried the chocolate one today. 😋 #ReadMore34 #Foodspiration

Good morning friends! For day 1 of #ReadMore34 I am focusing on these in progress audiobooks. I think I am finally going to finish the Unfortunate Events series this month.

Alora Loooove the unfortunate events series! It was what really got me into reading when I was younger. Definitely going to reread them one day 2y
MatchlessMarie @Alora I barely started the series for the first time about 3 years ago. I remember seeing them in my library as a kid but never got to them till recently. 2y

A strong penultimate book in the Beaudelaire story, setting up for an interesting final chapter. It's nice to see so many characters resurface and see how much the siblings have grown since the beginning of the books. Too bad Daniel Handler is such an awful person.

If we do terrible things for good reasons, are we heroes or villains? Things are getting complicated for the Baudilaire siblings. I really enjoyed this strong entry in the series. Ramping up to The End, finally.

Book 93nof the year, finished Nov 10, audio

This one was ok. Better than a lot of the middle ones. I am, as a change from normal, looking forward to this series being done. Over all I feel like I should have listened to the warnings scattered throughout and spent my time reading something else.

“The burning of a book is a sad, sad sight, for even though a book is nothing but ink and paper, it feels as if the ideas contained in the book are disappearing as the pages turn to ashes and the cover and binding...blacken and curl as the flames do their wicked work. When someone is burning a book, they are showing utter contempt for all of the thinking that produced its ideas, all of the labor that went into its words and sentences..."

There was a bit of #DejaVu in this book. One of the books before it talked about Deja Vu and that one was even stranger when two chapters in a row are the same lol 😂

Kalalalatja I haven‘t read this series, but I have always really wanted to! It just feels like a bit of a commitment 😅 6y

Look at that! First book I‘ve managed to finish in a month! Looking past my apathy with everything as of late, this one was quite good and probably one of the best in the series. Fast-paced and many old characters make a triumphant return. Looking forward to the final book!

I‘m trying to dig my way out of a reading slump...I dunno what I‘m in the mood for. Guess I‘ll work on finishing these so I‘ll be prepared whenever Netflix gives us a day‘s notice for season 3. Just 2 books to go! I started the series over 15 years ago.

Rachbb3 I hear ya, I'm coming out of one too. Its slow going so far. 6y
lauren.lerner Just came out of a slump myself. Hope yours ends soon!! 6y

Nute I just recovered from a reading slump. It wasn‘t a particular book. I couldn‘t read anything for awhile...nothing held my attention. After trying to figure it out, I finally accepted it and redirected my attention One day it was just a ‘done deal‘ and I picked up where I left off. Hang in there. It will pass.🙂 6y

hgrimes @Nute yep, I get them. Not in a while, but some of mine last months. Hope this isn‘t one of them! There are some fall books coming out that I‘m particularly excited about, so that will probably kill it if I can‘t get out of it sooner! Thanks for the support! (edited) 6y

Boy do I have a lot to say about this book. I‘ll save it for when I finish the series, but I feel like this could go both ways: you either love this book because of its tie in to the entire series, or hate it because of just that. For me, it felt like ‘Lemony Snicket‘ had planned to write this book from the beginning. It was definitely faster paced, but that doesn‘t really make it good in my eyes...

The setting of the Hotel Denouement was so much fun and a lot of questions got answered in this book - though not as many as I would have hoped. This series definitely leaves you with more questions than answers!

Some unexpected twists and turns. Now, to move on to the orphans' final chapter.

How you know I mean business with my embarrassingly large pile of laundry: large Dory tea cup and a good audiobook 💛🍪💛🍪💛📚📚📚

Louise I need to get serious with laundry this weekend too! Thank goodness for audiobooks! 😜 8y
stargazerblue49 @Louise I am not sure, but I think I have 2 months' worth of clean laundry that has just been sitting around waiting to be folded and put away 😳😳😳 8y
Louise @stargazerblue49 Then you are ahead of me! I've got a few months' worth of dirty laundry waiting to be washed. A medical crisis in the family threw all my organization to the wind. Only absolute necessities have been washed. Time to get back on track! 🙄😬 8y
stargazerblue49 @Louise Oh, no! Medicine is my problem, too, but for me, medicine is work! Hope everything is okay! Good luck with your laundry! 8y
Louise @stargazerblue49 Thanks! Things are getting back to normal. My mom fell on the ice in February and broke her hip, necessitating surgery. I've been with her 24/7 through it all and now with rehab. Between that and working from home, many other things have taken a back seat. One step at a time! 👣 (edited) 8y

I love the word Penultimate.

I couldn't wait to start the final book to see how it all ends!

Vinjii Would you say the entire series is worth it even as an adult who has never read them? I read the first 3 books and thought they were mildly amusing. If I had a kid I'd definitely read the books with them. 8y
LauraBeth I used to work in magazine publishing and I had to have the direct mail designed to encourage subscribers to renew (because it was the 90s!). I had one designed that went on top of a subscriber's next to last issue that said, "This is your penultimate issue!" That's how much I ❤ that word. And penumbra - that's good too ? 8y
Libby1 @Vinjii - I'm sorry it's taken so long to reply. Yes, I thought the whole series was worth a read. It does fall into a lot of categories. It is for middle grades but has a lot of very academic jokes only adults might understand. It is also completely absurd at times. I loved the quirkiness. 8y
Libby1 @LauraBeth - penultimate and penumbra are awesome! They'd be great in a tongue twister: Percy packed a pickled peck of penultimate penumbras! 8y
Vinjii @Libby1 I might continue then :) thank you for getting back to me! 8y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I find it annoying when people say they don't 'have time' to read... I say - 'yes, you do!' But you choose to do other things' 😐 8y
Tigerbook I love that series! Go Lemony Snicket 8y
