The Tea Planter's Wife | Dinah Jefferies

THE NUMBER ONE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER Dinah Jefferies' unforgettable new novel, The Tea Planter's Wife is a haunting, tender portrait of a woman forced to choose between her duty as a wife and her instinct as a mother... Nineteen-year-old Gwendolyn Hooper steps off a steamer in Ceylon full of optimism, eager to join her new husband. But the man who greets her at the tea plantation is not the same one she fell in love with in London. Distant and brooding, Laurence spends long days wrapped up in his work, leaving his young bride to explore the plantation alone. It's a place filled with clues to the past - locked doors, a yellowed wedding dress in a dusty trunk, an overgrown grave hidden in the grounds, far too small for an adult... Gwen soon falls pregnant and her husband is overjoyed, but she has little time to celebrate. In the delivery room the new mother is faced with a terrible choice, one she knows no one in her upper class set will understand - least of all Laurence. Forced to bury a secret at the heart of her marriage, Gwen is more isolated than ever. When the time comes, how will her husband ever understand what she has done? The Tea Planter's Wife is a story of guilt, betrayal and untold secrets vividly and entrancingly set in colonial era Ceylon. 'Captivating, powerful and passionate' Deborah Rodriguez on The Separation 'A richly detailed story... as intimate as a kiss and as sharp as the blade of a knife' David Gilham on The Separation 'I simply didn't want to put it down. Vivid and atmospheric - you can smell the tropics, feel the drenching heat...' Isabel Wolff on The Separation

I thoroughly enjoyed It. It‘s atmospheric and evocative. There‘s a great sense of time and place. The descriptions are very vivid and colourful, so easy to visualise. There are some fantastic, realistic and likeable characters, as well as the odd unlikeable one! It‘s beautifully written and plotted. An engaging, captivating, compelling and poignant read which brought a tear to my eye. Highly recommended.

OMG this is such a great giveaway! @umbrellagirl my mom was a big HT drinker. And when I was a girl I remember drinking it with her during our little tea parties with my porcelain Peter Rabbit mini tea set. It's the first time I remember feeling like a real grown up woman. I can't recall which flavors we drank however, but I am a huge tea drinker now and I'm sure I would probably love all of them!

It was pretty good. I thought the ending was interesting. I understand why the information at the end was at the end. But I also wonder what would happen if it had been moved up in the book and she had to defend her actions and family. But it was interesting.

Pairs well with: a fragrant spicy soap that lingers on your skin, a restless stretch of summer when you wish you were vacationing

This won't be your favorite book, but it does promise to transport you to an exotic tropical setting with the wistful nostalgia of hi-fi. There is a ribbon of mystery wound through the story that pulls all the stops at the end (in a faintly ridiculous but satisfying turn).

The blurb for the book really ratchets up a suspense and tension that just didn't exist for me in the actual reading. It was also very hard to care about the fate of any of the story's main characters, especially the heroine whose questionable choices are explored with very little depth or nuance.

Book 5 is this book, a bit different to what I usually read but have heard so many good things about it. Loved the way the book was written and how many twists there were in the plot. Unexpected but one of the best books I've ever read 🍹📖✈️

A story of family secrets & how when they are kept can change generations. At times I struggled to stay engaged & was frustrated with the characters. My daughter's other dog wanted me to finish & play with her.

Not the best writing, but the story sufficed for a short read. Not sure I would recommend this title unless you love historical fiction with a primary romance angle. Not my thing.

#TBRtemptation post! In 1920s Ceylon, Gwendolyn, a young Englishwoman, has married a charming widower who runs a tea plantation. But life isn't grand: the workers are resentful; the neighbors are treacherous; and there are clues to a disturbing past, which may involve her husband's first wife. Just as Gwen finds her place on the plantation, she acquires a terrible secret she may not be able to keep quiet. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Almost finished with this one, which has been very interesting. Unlike most historical fiction I've read, this one has a nice plot twist with just enough hints of intrigue to keep me going past my bedtime. I recommend this one. BTW, this is Love Guy and I at our annual trek to Tuscaloosa, aka The Holy Grail. And yes, I'm saying ROLL TIDE ROLL!

Okay so this was good for about, say half. Then it just became too drawn out, melodramatic, and eye-rolling. Bummed that it fell apart. Audiobook review will appear at AudioFile, but the performance was only okay. Arghhhh. But book inspired me to make curry. And, yes, I'm not a good food photographer.

dolleygurl I thought there was so much promise with the book at the beginning and then it just lost momentum. I wanted the "mystery" of what happened to his family to have been more than last few pages reveal 8y
BethFishReads @dolleygurl I know! And the "I should tell him, but I can't" got so boring 8y

Enjoying a reprieve from the day's heat (it was only 102° instead of 118° in Phoenix, today!) on the patio with a cuppa and Jefferies' US debut. This was a Sunday Times' bestseller & releases in the states in September. From some of the blurbs I'm a bit concerned about Orientalism, but we'll see.

What a stunning read. So exotic. The storyline focusing on many a cultural differences throughout the 1920s and 1930s draws you in, leaving you breathless. The story flows at such a pace - and I know this is a cliche - but I couldn't put this book down, finished it in 3 sittings!
