Turtle of Oman
Turtle of Oman | Naomi Shihab Nye
17 posts | 20 read | 16 to read
Praised by the Horn Book as both quiet and exhilarating, this novel by the acclaimed poet and National Book Award Finalist Naomi Shihab Nye follows Aref Al-Amri as he says goodbye to everything and everyone he loves in his hometown of Muscat, Oman, as his family prepares to move to Ann Arbor, Michigan. This book was awarded a 2015 Middle East Book Award, was named a Notable Book by the American Library Association, and includes extra material by the author.Aref does not want to leave Oman. He does not want to leave his elementary school, his friends, or his beloved grandfather, Sidi. He does not want to live in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where his parents will go to graduate school. His mother is desperate for him to pack his suitcase but he refuses. Finally, she calls Sidi for help. But rather than pack, Aref and Sidi go on a series of adventures. They visit the camp of a thousand stars deep in the desert, they sleep on Sidi s roof, they fish in the Gulf of Oman and dream about going to India, they travel to the nature reserve to watch the sea turtles. At each stop, Sidi finds a small stone that he later slips into Aref s suitcase mementos of home. This accessible, exquisite novel shines with gentle humor and explores themes of moving, family, nature, and immigration. Naomi Shihab Nye has created what Kirkus called a warm and humorous peek at the profound and mundane details of moving from one country to another a perfect pick for kids on the move. Features black-and-white spot art and decorations by Betsy Peterschmidt."

Aref and his family is moving from Oman to live in Michigan for three years. Instead of packing, he spends his last week with his grandfather soaking up memories of Muscat. This was my type of book. I learned a great many things of what makes #Oman special - wildlife, customs. It would make a great addition to a #Classroom that embraces all cultures. #BBRC @LibrarianRyan #ReadingAsia @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle

Today was the first day it was nice enough to sit outside and read. I finished this for #ReadingAsia2021. I enjoyed it but it made me realize how much I don't know about many countries in Asia. I spent a good part of the evening searching for more information.

This was a really great MG book about how hard it is to leave home. I moved a lot as a kid and resonated with how hard it was for Aref to leave his home and friends. Really well done. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #readingasia21 #oman

Librarybelle That‘s lovely you felt a connection to the book! I love when that happens! 4y

Another book done for #readingasia2021. It wasn‘t bad, but I didn‘t love it. The boy drove me crazy with his whining, and I was bored for at least half the book, but I loved Sidi and the special stones he found for Aref on each of their adventures. #oman Also at about 10 1/2 hours for #20in4.

Librarybelle Great progress in the #20in4 challenge! And way to go for reading another country! 4y
DGRachel @Librarybelle Thanks! I was trying to stick to books I already owned or could get in ebook format from the library, so this was the only option I could find for Oman. The Hoopla formatting was awful, though, so I ended up buying the Kindle version halfway through. That‘s when I saw other options that I wish I‘d seen first, but 🤷🏻‍♀️. At least it was a quick read. 😂 4y
meghathecloud This is the only one I could find for Oman. What were the other options you saw? 4y

The book tells the story of Aref (and his family) leaving Oman for the US so that his parents can attend university there. Aref is not very keen on leaving his home and spends time with his friends and his grandfather. I really liked how this book described the scenes, life and nature in #Oman.

Lovely story that shares the love between Aref and his grandfather Sidi and all the adventures they have together before Aref travels to Michigan with his parents for 3 years. #turtles #travel #family

Change is hard. Sometimes even more so for kids. I remember reading Habibi as a young person and it speaking right to me. This time around I think I'm too old for the protagonist. His stubborn hatred of the unfamiliar was quite frustrating. He was like an ancient curmudgeonly grandpa, but in a third grader's body. Fortunately it was so well written I loved it anyway.

Sweet book that follows an 11 year old boy as he and his grandfather say goodbye to Oman before he meets bed to America. Lots of delightful animal facts fill the pages. The love between the two is rich and wonderful.

This was really cute. It was different for me to see my own country depicted as the place someone was not wanting to move to.
I love the outings with the grandfather and the way his favorite animal represents this transition in life. An adorable story and one more American kids should be exposed to.
