#HappinessIs ... a little red dog 🐕 going on an adventure to Authors‘ Ridge at Sleepy Hollow in Concord MA. Annual anti-Black Friday #optout pilgrimage to the graves of H.D. Thoreau, the Emersons, Alcott, and DAR Harriet Lothrop — aka Margaret Sidney, author of “The Five Little Peppers.”

Bookzombie What a great #optout choice! 💕🐶 4y

I was obsessed with this book as a kid - written in 1881 it‘s the story of a widow and her five children living in poverty. It emphasises the values of family and hard work and honesty etc as a good nineteenth century children‘s book tended to do! There‘s a kind of rescue from poverty along the way but it‘s the first in a series so I‘m not sure if that‘s the end of the story 😊

Becker ❤️nostalgia- I loved it too❤️ 5y
theresidentromantic I loved this book!! I found I'd put it on a pedestal as a kid and found it hard to reread, but it's Definite treasure, especially how they care for their sister! 5y
Eggs Loved it too, read it many times 5y

rubyslippersreads @Cinfhen @LeahBergen I read this book over and over as a kid. My mom bought me a lovely vintage set of (almost) the whole series, but Im embarrassed to confess I haven‘t read them yet. Z😊 5y
Cinfhen As long as you‘re enjoying owning them @rubyslippersreads that counts too❤️❤️ 5y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads @Cinfhen I read this one as a kid but never read any of the sequels, either. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
Centique @rubyslippersreads ohhh it sounds beautiful though! 😍 Mine fell apart and i made it a cardboard cover - the complete opposite! 5y

Pickpick

Too sweet for words, like “Heidi” or “The Secret Garden.” #childrensliterature #childrensclassics

Aimeesue I still have a copy of an abridged illustrated storybook of this one that my grandmother gave me when I was a wee tot. I didn‘t realize until a couple years ago that it was only part of a much longer story. 5y
jillrhudy @Aimeesue I had no idea! This edition is lovely and going to my niece. 5y

Harriet is the author of the Five Peppers books. She's also a maaajor figure in Concord's literary heritage preservation!

Margaret Sidney lived here at The Wayside! The guide says her books were the very popular Harry Potters of her day. 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 This room dates back to the 1710s.

Somewhere along the line, I quit stuffing the peppers and chopping them up into the filling instead. I give you unstuffed peppers. Threw some extra turkey in with the rice to give it more protein.

hermyknee And I bet it is just as amazing! 7y
CocoReads @hermyknee it's pretty tasty! 7y

JacqMac Lol Yesterday I made kabobs, but I didn't put them on the sticks. Just tossed it all on a pan. That looks delicious! 7y
CocoReads @JacqMac that sounds like something I would do too! 7y
Jinjer OMG that is brilliant! Why did I never think of that? I always hated the soggy pepper and begged my mom to cook them in whatever way she did it where they ended up al dente! 7y
Jinjer PS we will be having this SOON thanks to your hack! 7y
CocoReads @Jinjer this one is super easy too. Ground turkey, rice pilaf mix, I cut up about 4 peppers for this one, used onion powder, garlic powder, and mrs dash herb and garlic seasoning (about a teaspoon of each), a small can of pizza sauce, and I chopped up some provolone cheese to melt in with it. I made the rice separate and sautéed the rest together, adding the sauce and cheese and rice to the burger mix 7y
CocoReads Easy, relatively quick and it's totally open to mixing whatever you've got to cater to your familiy's taste. 7y
