Unexpectedly one of the best books I have EVER READ! This gripping dystopian novel based in Ireland is of a world where all teens must train in order to survive β€˜the Call‘. In Irish time each person is gone for three minutes but in the β€˜Grey Land‘ a place which I habits joyfully and sickeningly cruel creatures called the Sídhe it is a whole day. The odds are that one in ten survive. The protagonist has polio so will she survive the Call. #gripping

What a book. I wasn‘t expecting this one to like this. I can‘t even explain. I am hooked and completely gripped. Started it yesterday and I haven‘t stopped. It‘s a gothic, dystopian novel based in Ireland where I‘m from and it is, I just can‘t put it into words. I‘ll have a review in a few days anyways!! It‘s basically about teens getting called by an evil force driven out of the country and have to fight to survive for three minutes. Read it!

This is a very dark and disturbing book - there's quite a lot of violence, and grotesque imagery. The Sidhe or fairies in this book are definitely not benevolent. They are cruel and merciless, but then again, so are some humans. It was a very strange read for me and not one I would repeat to be honest. For a book about fairies, it wasn't a magical experience. 3⭐

Finished this one yesterday #20in4

I really enjoyed this quick read. I thought the premise was fascinating, and I liked that we got to see what happened to everyone during the call, not just the main character. I also love anything to do with Ireland. The ONE thing I didn‘t love was the direction it went toward the end. It wasn‘t bad. It wasn‘t what I anticipated, but it also wasn‘t β€œa twist.” Just different than expected. 7/10

Today I learned that it is HARD to make a perfect circle out of yarn. Practically impossible even. πŸ˜‚.

The Wild Hunt meets The Hunger Games.

For Irish teenagers The Call can come at any time. One minute they're there, the next they're gone. 3 minutes and 4 seconds will determine their fate. 3 minutes and 4 Seconds to live or die. The few who survive return changed, warped and twisted into macabre creations at the hands of the Sidhe.

I think I missed a season or two of the #Booked2018 Challenge, but I did manage most of the last section!

Underdog Hero - The Call
Features a holiday - The Halloween Tree (and, not pictured, but I just finished Krampus by Brom as well!)
New in 2018 - The Silence of the Girls
MC with invisible illness - For a Muse of Fire
Spooky Read - 14

I also read a few Miss Marple books (MC over 70), but I believe I read she was closer to 65? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Cinfhen I‘m happy to count Miss Marple πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚and I‘m thinking The silence of Girls might be my #FirstReadOf2019 ...I‘ve narrowed it down to 4 choices (edited) 6y

Absolutely loved this book! Fantastic premise and full of unique details. As soon as I read the premise, I was hooked. The writing was so well paced and just sucked me in. Was hard to put down. It definitely had a hunger games vibe to it, but I preferred this book to the hunger games for sure. I love the use of Irish mythology. Also, great use of tension throughout, definitely kept me on the edge of my seat!

This book was okay. I didn‘t find it creepy, like I heard it was (and I‘m a giant wimp!). Not that I was reading it to be creeped out. 3🌟.

The Sidhe want to wipe out all the Irish people in the world. They can somehow snatch them and transplant them into their world where the teenagers have to try to survive. There is a lot of death in this book.

I‘m currently reading this book. I‘m about 70 pages in. I‘m not finding it creepy... I‘m finding it very implausible (yes I know it‘s paranormal fiction). Like how can the Sidhe just take the people and put them back. Why can‘t the Irish invent something that stops their people from being taken.

I know that‘s not the point of the book, but these are the thoughts that are running through my head while reading!

Due to a fairy curse, Ireland is not only cutoff from the rest of the world, but also every Irish youth will be called to the fairy world where they will fight for their survival. Only 1 in 10 survive, the bodies of the living and dead often return deformed & permanently scarred. This book is similar to Hunger Games, but it's darker & creepier. Adding to an already unique story, the main character is disabled, which I loved!

"Thousands of years ago, humans banished the Sidhe fairy race to another dimensions. The beautiful, terrible Sidhe have stewed in a land of horrors ever since, plotting their revenge...and now their day has come".

This book had me hooked! I flew threw it, and even when I did put it down it still had me thinking "what is going to happen next?!" "Who will be next to be Called?" "Will they make it out Greyland alive?!"

Talk about a page turner! ?

Set in an alternate version of Ireland, this story follows Nessa, a young girl suffering from the effects of polio. She is in survival school as during adolescence, all children will be Called, suddenly forced to fight for their lives in the grey land against the Sidhe, whose touch can bend and shape the human body like it was clay. This YA novel is grim and gruesome at times, but also entertaining, engaging, and fast-paced.
