Dragon Haven
Dragon Haven: Volume Two of the Rain Wilds Chronicles | Robin Hobb
The acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of Dragon Keeper returns with a second enthralling tale of dragons and humans, adventure and discovery, love and freedom Centuries had passed since dragons last roamed the war-torn world of the Rain Wild River. But as peace once again settled upon the land, a lost generation of sea serpentsancient, half-starved, and wearyreturned to cocoon, certain that they would be reborn as the beautiful and powerful dragons of legend. But their arduous journey exacted a heavy toll, and the proud serpents emerged as sickly, half-formed beasts, unable to fly or hunt . . . or thrive. For years now they have been trapped on a swampy riverbank between forest and river, hungry and barely alive, reliant on humans to provide for them. With their survival at stake, fifteen dragonsamong them the wise golden Mercor, the haughty and dazzling silver-blue queen Sintara, and the delicate copper beauty Relpdahave set off on a dangerous trek into the unknown, up the Rain Wild River, in hopes of rediscovering the ancient Elderling city of Kelsingra, the lost haven for dragons and Elderlings alike. The dragons are accompanied by a disparate group of human keepers, rejects from Rain Wild society. They, too, yearn to find Kelsingra and create a home of their own, one in which they may make their own rules and decide their own fate. But is Kelsingra real or merely a fragment of a glorified past buried deep in the dragons' shared memories? No map exists to guide them, and the noble creatures find their ancient recollections of little use in a land changed by generations of flooding and seismic chaos. As the dragons, the humansincluding the strong and defiant Rain Wild girl Thymara; the wealthy dragon scholar and Trader's wife, Alise; and her companion, the urbane Sedricand their magical supply barge, captained by the gruff Leftrin, forge their way ever deeper into uncharted wilderness, human and beast alike discover they are changing in mysterious and dangerous ways. While the bonds between them solidify, starvation, flashfloods, and predators will imperil them all. But dragons and humans soon learn that the most savage threats come from within their own company . . . and not all of them may survive. Returning to the territory of her beloved Liveship Traders and Tawny Man trilogies, New York Times bestselling author Robin Hobb creates a lush and ultimately triumphant tale set in an imaginative world of magic and wonder as compelling and emotionally resonant as our own.

It was fun sinking back into Robin Hobb‘s world of the Rain Wilds, rejoining dragons and keepers for book 2 in this series.

The dragons selfish and childish behavior at the beginning had me rolling my eyes, but the characters and setting and Hobb‘s writing quickly absorbed me. I think book 3 is in my near future.

Characters are always Hobb's strong suite and it is true here as well. Strong second book. Dragons and keepers head up the river to try to find Kelsingra, a mythical city of dragons. Will they find it?

This book captures the imagination so much so, that I found myself actually dreaming of dragons and the Rain Wilds.
I usually try to only read 1 Robin Hobb per month, in order to get to all the other books on my TBR. But lately, every time I finish one I find myself picking up the next one in the series. The others will just have to wait, I‘m fully immersed in this world and I don‘t want to leave!

TrishB Brilliant books😁 3y
LazyOwl The Elderlings series is some of my all time favourite books. Glad you're enjoying 3y

Schnoebs Idk if it‘s just me but I‘m so confused my here be dragons prompt. Is it just something with dragons in it? 6y
DuckOfDoom @Schnoebs yes! It is a reference to early mapmaking where there are assumed dragons or monsters in uncharted territory. Fantasy maps have adopted this as 'here be dragons' or'here be monsters' 6y
Schnoebs That‘s what I thought but I wasn‘t sure 😂 6y

I love how Hobb can take a book about dragons and make it about so much more! In this second book we follow the dragons and their keepers on their quest to find a place to be. But Hobb also deals with the fragile male ego, gender stereotypes, sexuality, physically and mentally abusive relationship. I‘m in awe of how she writes complex and nuanced female characters, and how she manages to be political while still writing a great story!

BarbaraBB You almost convince me. It‘s just... the typography... 😫 (edited) 6y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB you don‘t like it? 😄 there are the American covers, but they really aren‘t great 😂 6y
BarbaraBB That gothic font... the main reason why I wouldn‘t look twice at these books. Maybe I should look for the US edition! (edited) 6y
GatheringBooks i looooove books about dragons - overall design (typography/layout of the covers) is astounding 6y
Kalalalatja @GatheringBooks you might like this series then, but since it is the fourth series in Hobb‘ Realm of the Elderlings “saga” I would recommend reading some of the previous series, at least The Liveship Traders trilogy, since this is a continuation of that trilogy 👍 6y

Finished this book tonight. Took me a while to get through it as I've been very busy lately. Robin Hobb weaves stories with such incredible character development. This volume wrapped up nicely what I felt was left hanging in the first book.

For a while, I was wondering if this was a so-so, but no, it'll have to be a pick. It gets a bit wordy at times, things are explained perhaps two times too many, and there's a bit too much relationship focus (1 romantic sub plot is enough!), but it's still a great story. #fantasy (I need more #dragons!)

I wish Hobb would tone down the slut shaming in this book. It's not even like it can be blamed on one character, it's all over the place. Also, is Litsy crashing for someone else too? It crashed three times before I could post this.

EloisaJames Doesn't seem to be crashing now. 7y

There's something about Fantasy books and big fat ACTUAL paper books, not ebooks, perhaps because I read Fantasy before ebooks became a thing. However, I couldn't wait for book 2 so I got the Kindle version 🤓

RanaElizabeth Hah, fantasy is probably the one genre I do read on my tablet. They tend to be too many pages to hold comfortably! 7y

The boyfriend is out for diner and drinks with friends so tonight it's just me, my book and my camera shy cat. Paired with mushroom risotto and blueberries and Greek yoghurt for dessert. Also the neighbour is blasting some dance music so I put on some classical music to drown it out. I love classical music when I'm reading (Dvorak romance for strings is especially good) do you listen to music when reading? And if so, what?

TrishB I prefer silence 😀 Hubby and kids make so much noise I treasure any quiet hours reading! 7y
saresmoore @TrishB Amen. I actually requested that everyone whisper at the dinner table last night. 🙉 7y
Zelma I typically like quiet when I read. Mr. Z always has the tv on when he's home so I like the break from it. That said, we've been known to put on classical as well when reading. I usually just find a station while he has a ton on his computer. 7y
See All 12 Comments
Kalalalatja I prefer quiet, but music without lyrics is okay too 👍 7y
Sarah83 Classics Music or movie musics only played by an orchestra can be very nice. 😎 7y
TrishB @saresmoore I may try that 😀 or sign language! 7y
Tsubame I like to pick instrumental music which might be from the world in the book itself 🎶 7y
RealLifeReading I typically do most of my reading in bed before sleeping so no music or anything. But I've got two young boys so I'm pretty good at reading amongst a variety of distractions. Like cartoons! 7y
Posemn I have MPR classical music on my radio from the moment I wake up until we turn on the news ( which I've been doing less of THIS election season) every day. I love the music in the background of my day. However, it's No music when I am walking (want to hear those birds) and The Current and a little bit of country when I'm driving. 7y
I-read-and-eat @TrishB @saresmoore @Zelma @Kalalalatja @RealLifeReading I agree with prefered silence. Sadly my neighbour is not one for quiet reading. @Tsubame Ooooh I might try that with some good epic fantasy or historical fiction. @Posemn Amen to silence when walking. Although the other day I went for a walk with an audiobook and it was great! 7y
Posemn I know. I keep reading all of the #Litsians posts about listening to audiobooks while getting a walk in. Maybe I will try it this winter ( when the birds have flown very far south). I could get a lot more books read! 7y
I-read-and-eat @Posemn This was my first try at it, I usually also walk in silence, but it was good for a change. Could still hear most birds through the audiobook. 7y

I pick Hobb's arrogant, wise and mighty dragons as my #supernaturalbeings for #booktober. They are extremely proud and anoying but this somehow feels like it is what dragons are supposed to be like. After some interesting reading on the refugee crisis time to avoid reality with this wonderful piece of fantasy.
