Of these 3 boarding school books, Mystwick School of Music took the cake! It had great world building and magic based on music!
Mystwick and Black Hollow Lane shared the classic boarding school elements of a mysteriously missing parent, the enemy roommate, and a few faithful friends to aid in the quest! Either would be great for fans of Harry Potter.
Midnight for Charlie Bone was just so-so.

5 Dec 20-6 Jan 2021 (audiobook)
This was a fun audiobook for Trix and me. A simple story: a girl is accepted into an elite school and feels as though she does not fit in or deserve to be there but eventually, with the help of a new friend, reluctant roommate and friendly ghost, learns her own value.
What made this great was the music. Magic in this world is created through music, a concept brought to life more easily through audio than on a page.

A bit Harry Potter-like; a 12 year old orphan, Amelia, goes to a boarding school to learn magic. Had some twists I wasn‘t expecting and is even a bit dark (but not scary). The magic system, created by musical instruments, is well thought out with spells categorised by colour and there‘s even mention of black magic. The children were realistic, if more responsible than my own 11 yo. Kept me engaged

ShyBookOwl Sounds fun! And I'm sure lots of ppl are looking for HP read-alikes right now 😕 4y

Written in (first person) present tense which makes it feel rushed until you get used to it

humouress This is a children‘s book ... but I‘m starting to have dark suspicions about the protagonist 4y
humouress Ooh; now it might be a ghost story 🤔 4y

#MagicalMay #MusicalCover 🎼

Here are four books from my shelves with musical covers—or at least with music in their titles. I have only read Beach Music (many moons ago) but I hope to get to the others someday. The tagged book is on my Audible #TBR & it looks cute! 🎼

Eggs Perfect 👌🏼🎶👏🏻 4y

This was one of the few Audible Originals that I've truly loved. Such a magical story that transports you to this world. It reminded me a bit of the magic I felt the first time I read Harry Potter and more recently, Nevermoor. It's solidly middle grade, but the addition of the symphony music throughout added an elegance and beauty. Highly recommend for a fun listen with your kids.

I adore the idea of musicraft, that music can heal and build, help things grow and calm. This book will obviously invite comparisons to Harry Potter and it does have its similarities, but Amelia is a fun underdog of a protagonist that I was rooting for the whole book.

This has been getting a lot of talk online, and a few stared reviews. There are a few Littens who have posted reviews of arcs already.

This looks entirely too cute for words.

VioletBramble I listened to the audiobook. That format has music, including original compositions. It is really cute. I'd definitely read/listen to any sequels. 4y
Schlinkles @VioletBramble Interesting, the book has really cute illustrations. It would be nice if it came with a link to a Spotify playlist or something. 4y

This was so freaking cute! I don't know how accurate all of the information about instruments and music was but having a Hogwarts where you cast spells by playing music is the most pure thing ever! The characters, ghost mystery and magic was so much fun.

Just_reading Ooh have to check this out! Thanks for sharing your review 😊 4y

It just dawned on me how many free audible originals I have...and how few I've read. This just looks so cute and I want to try it.

VioletBramble I listened to this. It is cute. The music helps move the story along. 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Just listened to this lovely book. Really fun. The ending was amazing. I loved the little bits of music performed throughout. Excellent narration. Definitely recommend! I gave it 5 🌟 on Audible because I‘m a notorious star upgrader. My true feelings can usually only be found here 😘😂 Have you read it? What did you think?

Since today was chore day, I stuck with audiobooks. I probably won‘t make it to 24 hrs for #24b4Monday, but feeling pretty good my time so far.

A Rare Book is a mini short story set in Peter Grant‘s world (listed as book no. 6.5). Only 30 minutes long, it was a fun romp.

Mystwick School is reminiscent of HP, but with musical instruments instead of wands. Still a fun story and best on audio because of the musical accompaniment.

Andrew65 A great time. 😊 (edited) 5y

Picked this Audible Original audiobook on a whim- hey it‘s free- after getting another book. It‘s a YA fantasy about a world where music makes magic. 12 year old Amelia dreams of going to Mystwick, a school for musical magic. All the music mentioned is played by a symphony and includes original compositions. It‘s less than 9 hours long. The reader sounds just like a 12 year old girl. The story was enjoyable. I‘d read more if this becomes a series
