13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear
13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear | Walter Moers
"A bluebear has twenty-seven lives. I shall recount thirteen and a half of them in this book but keep quiet about the rest," says the narrator of Walter Moers s epic adventure. "What about the Minipirates? What about the Hobgoblins, the Spiderwitch, the Babbling Billows, the Troglotroll, the Mountain Maggot Mine is a tale of mortal danger and eternal love, of hair s breadth, last-minute escapes." Welcome to the fantastic world of Zamonia, populated by all manner of extraordinary characters. It s a land of imaginative lunacy and supreme adventure, wicked satire and epic fantasy, all mixed together, turned on its head, and lavishly illustrated by the author."

A treasure trove of imagination. Adventure & nonsense in equal measure, there are shaggy-dog-story stretches but also a lot of fun. Cover does well to reference Adams and Silverstein, I'd add the absurdities of Terry Pratchett's Discworld & Alice in Wonderland to the mix. Beware: certain creatures & scenarios could be nightmare fuel, and being published in 1999 means certain insensitivities crop up. ⚠️ Fatphobia

The keyboard: a reliable source of inspiration. ⌨️

julesG It's Quertzuiopü in German (different alignment of keys on the keyboard). Fredda is my kids' favourite. 9mo
julesG Also, your posts a) inspired us to dig up my copy only to notice b) one child took my copy to their father's and c) it's now in storage because their father had an accident while moving house and no boxes have been unpacked so far. 9mo
Robotswithpersonality @julesG Nifty! I had no idea the keyboard was different but that makes total sense if it's based on the letters used most in the language. I love the 'hairball that stuck a finger in a light socket' look of Fredda, but I've been weaving my mind because I feel like I've seen the character design before...maybe there's a muppet that loops similar? 🤷🏼‍♂️🤔 9mo

#LetsTravelJuly Day 20: Captain Bluebear‘s journey has taken a great deal of #detour but this novel is one epic ride! Some may find Moers longwinded while others might find his imagination too absurd for words and abandon the reading of the novel altogether. I was a big fan of this book! The land of Zamonia that author Walter Moers created is whimsical and quirky and the illustrations that accompany the story are fantastic. It‘s 703 pages but it flies by and ended up being a fairly quick read. If you want an adult fairytale, this book is for you. Highly recommend!

#QuotsyApril18 Day 23: Take a #Chance is all that Captain Bluebear is asking. If you haven‘t discovered Walter Moers yet, and you love fantasy and word play and strange art - then you will have to HAVE TO find him and read him. Translated from the German language, I pride myself in reading all of his translated works, thus far. I am a committed nerd that way. Get to know Zamonia, book nerds! It‘s an acquired taste, I admit, but well worth it.

Seems you love Walter Moers – or you don‘t. I tried once or twice with his books but I could not relate to neither his characters nor the way he writes.

But as I saw @Sarah83 's post about the English edition I remembered that one of my friends offered me to lend me the audiobook. Which is what I‘d really look forward to because I think this might be a story suiting my ears better than my eyes.

Sarah83 You try the TV edition first, than the book is really amazing 😍 6y
Buechersuechtling You‘re not talking about „Die Sendung mit der Maus“ (The Show with the Mouse) pieces/stories, are you❓🤔 It‘s that kind of nonsense displayed there that made me initially dislike the author and that book. Time has come for me to give into the ereader! So, I ask you all, on a budget, which do you recommend?

Mindyrecycles Kindle Paperwhite all the way. 7y
Zelma Depends on whether you want to link it to Amazon (kindle) or Barnes and Noble (nook). I really prefer the ones with glow lighting rather than backlit screens, so it looks more like a page and not a tablet. So kindle paperwhite or nook glow, or one of the newer models like that. (edited) 7y
Crystalblu @Zelma I will probably use amazon the most, they basically own my soul by now, and I do want to read in the dark. Any feelings on the Fire? 7y
See All 12 Comments
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Another Kindle Paperwhite fan here. If your tablet needs are already being met then you don't need a Fire. E-ink feels so much more like a book than a tablet screen. 7y
Zelma I agree with @TobeyTheScavengerMonk on preferring a reader over tablet. But if you want a tablet (a device that will do more than just hold books), Fire is great. My mom loves hers. However, I find the light too harsh on my eyes for reading. Plus you can get a device with wifi and 3G or whatever so you don't necessarily need to hook up to a computer. I can purchase books with no problem on my nook but plug into a desktop to download library books. 7y
Crystalblu @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I will add, I have no tablet. Just a phone and a laptop, which I never use, so the idea of having something that can act as a tablet as well is somewhat intriguing as I use the web for cooking ideas quite a lot. I'm the kind off person who does not like single use items. 7y
myers85 Has to be Kindle Paperwhite. I also have a Fire but I never use it for reading, just browsing. The Paperwhite as others have said is just like a book and you can read in the dark without the light being harsh on your eyes. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Okay, here is something to consider. As much as I like the Paperwhite, it doesn't do comics. If you've got no tablet and you want to read comics as well as books on an e-reader, you kind of have to go Fire. 7y
DGRachel I have a Kindle Touch, Paperwhite, and Fire. The touch is my favorite ereader, because there is no light so it's just like reading a "real" book, but you can't read in the dark without another light source. The Fire now has a blue light filter for night reading, which is AWESOME! I can read at night without sleep disturbances associated with computer/phone screens (I'm really sensitive). 7y
Betty Kindle Paperwhite 7y
ApoptyGina69 Since I have the iPhone 6plus, I just have the kindle app. I like it lots! Totally agree about multi-use tools. Just like in the kitchen. Good luck today with Foothills Celebration. Maybe the rain will keep the ppl calm. 🍷😍 7y
LauraBrook Kindle paperwhite. I've tried on my smartphone, with a Fire, and iPad, and the only one I like and return to is my paperwhite. Kobo's are also supposed to be v good but don't know firsthand. 7y
