The Family Upstairs: A Novel
The Family Upstairs: A Novel | Lisa Jewell
Be careful who you let in... Soon after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns home from work to find the letter shes been waiting for her entire life. She rips it open with one driving thought: I am finally going to know who I am. She soon learns not only the identity of her birth parents, but also that she is the sole inheritor of their abandoned mansion on the banks of the Thames in Londons fashionable Chelsea neighborhood, worth millions. Everything in Libbys life is about to change. But what she cant possibly know is that others have been waiting for this day as welland she is on a collision course to meet them. Twenty-five years ago, police were called to 16 Cheyne Walk with reports of a baby crying. When they arrived, they found a healthy ten-month-old happily cooing in her crib in the bedroom. Downstairs in the kitchen lay three dead bodies, all dressed in black, next to a hastily scrawled note. And the four other children reported to live at Cheyne Walk were gone.

Mehso-so

Confession: I don‘t like psychological thrillers. I THINK I do. I read the synopsis, get excited, read the book & then I‘m not thrilled. This wasn‘t an exception. I was loath to pick it up after putting it down & was just “meh” about it. Toward the end I got more interested but when all was said and done I thought, that was it? Ok 🤷🏻‍♀️ If you like thrillers you will enjoy this. If you don‘t, this is probably not going to change your mind.

Sace Gorgeous picture! No "meh" about this picture! 10h

This is the first book that I‘ve read by Lisa Jewell and it was amazing. Can your past really determine how you will end up in adulthood? What is it that determines a good or bad choice? Do people have the ability to really change? These are all questions I had while reading this book and learning about the characters.

Nonlinear timeline told from different points of view, of the children forced to grow up under increasingly horrific conditions. The mystery of what happened in that house pulls you along. Solid read.

Very original! You dont normally see characters like the ones in the family upstairs in books, but theyre all surprisingly likeable and in some cases not at the same time. The way their story all wove together was great to read. A bit predictable, perhaps, but overall a great story!

Last package, my #BOTM! Just finished tagged. Deliciously creepy, but there were still some of the dumb protagonist moves I hate about thrillers.

Overall though, this is one of my favorite BOTM thrillers. I enjoyed the twists and turns and the alternate narration among Henry, Lucy, and Libby. I‘ll look at her backlist.

I‘ve had a hard day pain-wise. I called my surgeon‘s office and we‘ll see what they say. 🤞🏻 I feel better soon.

Megabooks @Crazeedi Thank you! I wish we lived closer too. Jee_HookedOnBookz And I get what you meant by dumb protagonist moves lol I don't know why but most thrillers I've read so far have that 😂😂😂 3w
Reviewsbylola Wow! It must be good! 3w
Megabooks @Jee_HookedOnBookz I was particularly pissed when they were still wondering if they were drugged that night with Henry! No I frequently allow myself to be locked in a room with a virtual stranger by a complete stranger with no phone! And what did your mom tell you before college about not accepting drinks from strange men? Yeah, well she meant don‘t accept 10 of them too! (edited) 3w
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola it really was better than any of the ones I read in 2017 3w
Jee_HookedOnBookz @Megabooks omg your comment made me 😂 😂 😂 I totally agree with you! I'm just glad it was still an engrossing read or I would've given hope on all psychological thrillers! Lol 3w

#114 my BOTM pick and so far I really enjoy most of the book picks from them. This ones a good short one so let‘s dive in!

Caffeinated_Reader Holy shit.
Okay first off when I started this book I was so confused and hated how the timeline was all mushed together. It was like reading a memory of a person that was still trying to remember it themselves. I am so happy that I kept reading.
4w
Caffeinated_Reader This book is so worth digging in and being confused and wanting to rip your hair out over lol the story of the memory is SO worth knowing. Finding out everything and reading the pain and tragedy of it all is just so well delivered. It‘s such a tragic unraveling. Man. I highly recommend this book!!! 4w

ReadswithWeenies I bought Ninth House in a weak moment at Target and I was pretty displeased that BOTM picked it as one of their 5 just because I would have gladly supported them had I not been so overeager to get my hands on a copy that instant!
