To Sir, With Love
To Sir, With Love | E. R. Braithwaite
This classic schoolroom drama of a black teacher in Londons tough East End who triumphs over bigotry and ignorance to change the lives of his students forever was hailed by the New York Times as a book that the reader devours quickly, ponders slowly, and forgets not at all With opportunities for black men limited in postWorld War II London, Rick Braithwaite, a former Royal Air Force pilot and Cambridge-educated engineer, accepts a teaching position that puts him in charge of a class of angry, unmotivated, bigoted white teenagers whom the system has mostly abandoned. When his efforts to reach these troubled students are met with threats, suspicion, and derision, Braithwaite takes a radical new approach. He will treat his students as people poised to enter the adult world. He will teach them to respect themselves and to call him Sir. He will open up vistas before them that they never knew existed. And over the course of a remarkable year, he will touch the lives of his students in extraordinary ways, even as they in turn, unexpectedly and profoundly, touch his. Based on actual events in the authors life, To Sir, With Love is a powerfully moving story that celebrates courage, commitment, and vision, and is the inspiration for the classic film starring Sidney Poitier.

For #thebigjubileeread for the decade 1952-61 I chose this novel published 1959 ER Braithwaite an author from Guyana. I confess I have not see the movie this book inspired however that doesn‘t take away from this amazing story! Truly, should be required reading. So much to learn from this story. #readingchallange2022

TheBookHippie Was required reading for my high school honors English it was considered a NEW classic. 2y
KristiAhlers @TheBookHippie oh I‘m glad! If more people read books like this. The more they would understand I‘d hope. This one truly spoke to me. 2y
TheBookHippie @KristiAhlers it‘s still required here for some schools. I read it four decades ago 🤯. 2y

KristiAhlers @TheBookHippie yeah I graduated in ‘87 and my honors/AP English class only focused on Shakespeare. Only play if his we didn‘t read was A Midsummers Night Dream. Anything normal kids read in school I‘ve picked up on my own. To say I‘m salty at how much I‘ve missed is an understatement 2y
mcctrish This is the only book I‘ve read from that decade ❤️❤️ of the challenge 2y
KristiAhlers @mcctrish I can totally understand that! I may quit while I‘m ahead for that decade! 2y

Today I finished this book after 5 days. I decided to read this because the movie is my favourite movie of all time. Although I preferred the movie, it doesn‘t take away how moving and important this book is, it made me more aware and think about the horrible prejudices back in the 60s and how ‘Sir‘ overlooked that and moulded the minds of his students for the better. A must read!
I gave this book 4 stars✨

TheLudicReader I also love that movie. A classmate sang the song “To Sir, With Love” to our principal when we graduated from high school. Not a dry eye in the house. 3y

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. An autobiographical novel of one of the first black teachers in the British school (East London) systems in the 1950's. It tells the heartwarming tale of the relationship of "Sir's" relationship with young adults facing a number of difficulties.

TheLudicReader The movie is beautiful, @Yoricke_SouthAfrica. Sidney Poitier is so beautiful and that song. One of my classmates actually sang it to our principal when we graduated from high school...a million years ago. Still makes me cry. 4y

How does one review a classic? Let me just say that I felt it more deeply than I could have even 10 years ago, much less when I was in school. Lots to think about here.

E.R Braithwaite through his reminiscence To Sir with love makes us remember that one teacher we always had .
How the new negro teacher besides the presence of all the prejudices against him and despite the intolerant behaviour of the students who came from a financially challenged families and background , his dogma of teaching and handling his students with utmost care and perfection is what makes the novel a beautiful piece of art and emotion .

Hello @BarbaraBB! Thank you for the #spotlightgiveaway! What a thoughtful idea, and certainly adds some great recommendations to our TBR.
I would go with this autobiography - reflecting on fight against prejudice, teacher student bond, and above all, perseverance.

Memory fails but I don‘t think there‘s any actual kissing of the teacher - but certainly a powerful story of student/teacher relationships and society at the time.

When your brother borrows your favourite stack of books, two reactions occur - 1. You feel elated about the choice of books (I have loved reading all of them) 2. You are paranoid about the care so you give him strict instructions to the point of annoyance 😶
So fun! 😂

#lovetitles #feistyfeb The movie is more sentimental than the book and doesn't delve as deeply into issues of race and class. It's also set in the swinging sixties rather than post-war London. The film has far overshadowed the book, but it's worth a read.
