A sampling of the many horse books that have been on my shelves seemingly forever. They first belonged to my uncle in his boyhood and he later passed them on to me. I went through a major horse phase as a girl and so loved these stories.

Lovely story about a boy and his horse, but not really memorable for me.

Do you know the feeling of intense satisfaction? After eating a huge meal, you emit a deep sigh of joy? That is what the story of the Sham and Agba does for me. I'm just incredibly happy and satisfied with such a great story.

amber_ldsmom What a great review! Excited to read this one. I read another of her books, Brighty of the Grand Canyon, and I loved that one. 4y

Another childhood favorite & Book 4 for #BookSpinBonanza!! I hadn't read this one in years, but was drawn right in to this story about Sham, the Godolphin Arabian & one of the founders of the Thoroughbred breed. While much of this story is somewhat legend-like as the facts have been lost in the mists of time, it's still a fun tale w/ gorgeous illustrations by Wesley Dennis. Bonus: I collected Breyer horses for years & still have Sham on my shelf!!

TheAromaofBooks Set during the reign of King George II, this also checks off my 18th Century box for #Jennyis30 @jenniferw88 - Still slowly working on your challenge 😂

Also took me to Suffolk for #SeparatedbyaPondTour @Andrew65 - my first check for May, as I've mostly been reading in fantasy worlds!
4y
Palimpsest That was one of my favorite books when I was young too. I also collected Breyer horses. 😊 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I haven‘t seen this since I was a little girl! ❤️😱❤️ 4y

rubyslippersreads I was another collector of Breyer horses and Marguerite Henry books. ❤️🐴 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Palimpsest @rubyslippersreads - I played with my Breyers a lot, so they aren't in very collectible condition & while I still have Lath from this set, Lady Roxanne is no more! 😬 I eventually gave most of them to my niece, but have kept several (including Sham) that were especial favorites. I've also been rereading a lot of Henry's books and really enjoying them - I cried when I was reading Stormy last year! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwyrm42 - I bought that copy of King of the Wind in 1997 and still remember how excited I was to find a hardcover edition, which includes several bonus full-color illustrations by Wesley Dennis that aren't in the paperbacks. It's in pretty good shape considering it was printed in 1950, after it won the Newbery Award in 1949!! 4y
tracey38 I've always loved horses! 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @TheAromaofBooks I‘ll definitely have to be on the lookout for a copy! Oh, the nostalgia! ❤️😍❤️ 4y
iread2much Aww, I also collected Breyer horses! 4y
PaperbackPirate I still have my Breyer collection too! They do still come in handy for Bookstagramming! 🐎 4y

#BuzzwordBookathon Book 1 ✔️

Horse Sham and stable boy Agba make a sweet pairing throughout this novel‘s journey. It‘s a classic, and I probably would have loved it more if I loved horses or had childhood nostalgia tied to it.

mrsmarch Mmmm childhood nostalgia. It‘s amazing what books I‘ve totally forgotten but immediately remember when I see someone post! 4y
Clwojick Fun fact about me: horses and dolphins are the only two animals/mammals that creep me out 🙈😂 4y
TheAromaofBooks This is actually on my Bonanza list so I am hoping to reread it this month - it was totally one of my childhood favorites so I have ALL the nostalgia 😂 @Clwojick - So you're saying you DON'T want a pony for your birthday?? 😜 4y
Clwojick @TheAromaofBooks I would probably cry. 😂😂😂 I‘d rather a bear or a blue whale. Thanks 🙏 (edited) 4y

Still plenty of time to join #BookSpinBonanza - I won't draw the numbers until Saturday!!

Just a reminder - regular #BookSpin will still be happening, so if you aren't interested in trying to get through your whole stack, no worries!! I will be drawing #BookSpin & #DoubleSpin numbers as usual & only those two reads will count as entries for the end-of-the-year giveaway.

But for those of us crazy enough to try, May should be an exciting month!!

Lollymya What‘s this about??? 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Lollymya - Anyone who wants to puts together a list of 20 books they've been meaning to read & tags me when they post their list. On the 2nd of every month, I draw 2 numbers (#BookSpin & #DoubleSpin) & everyone reads those books sometime during the month & tags me with the reviews - each review is an entry for an end-of-the-year giveaway I'm going to have. This month as a special challenge I'm drawing all 20 numbers & some folks are seeing if ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) they can read through their whole list in the order drawn, just for fun!! You're more than welcome to join for just one or two reads, or to try for the whole shebang - you just have to post a list!! @Lollymya 4y

Sace Let me make sure I understand.... I make a numbered list of 20 books. Each month I read 2 of those books, depending on the number you drew? 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Sace - Yes, exactly!! You try to read the books that match the number(s) I drew that month. Also, all 20 numbers are in play each month, so people either add books to replace the ones they read each month, or they give some of their books more than one number. Some people only do the first number drawn each month, while some people prefer to do two - it's whichever works into your schedule. This month I'm drawing all 20 numbers because some ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) people are going to try to read as many of their books as they can. You are welcome to join for as many or few books as you feel like reading - just tag me if you post a list!! @Sace 4y
Sace @TheAromaofBooks cool! Let me ruminate on it a bit. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Sace - no pressure!! There are also several people who do it every few months instead of every month - it's basically a lawless challenge haha 4y
Sace @TheAromaofBooks can it be combined with my Booked 2020 or Reading Europe challenge? 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Sace - the 20 books can be any books that you want to read, so absolutely! If you have titles picked out for either of those challenges, you can totally put them on your list. That's kind of the nice thing about this particular challenge - it's a list of books you're already planning to/wanting to read, rather than adding new books to the pile!! 4y
Sace @TheAromaofBooks "lawless challenge" ❤️ 4y
coffees what are the differences bt the 3 tags on your post? 4y
TheAromaofBooks @crimson613 - the main challenge is #BookSpin, which is the first number that I draw every month. #DoubleSpin is an option for some people who want to read more than one book from their list - it's the second number that I draw every month. For May only I am doing #BookSpinBonanza - I drew all 20 numbers & some people are trying to see how far through their lists they can read in order. But that's just a one-off, not every month. 4y
coffees @TheAromaofBooks Ohhh awesome! Let me make a list them :D I can still join right? 4y
TheAromaofBooks @crimson613 - yes, absolutely!! Just make your list & tag me - then you can decide how many books you want to read this month haha 4y

This is one of those books that you just want to take long, deep breaths after reading just so you can try to soak in all the goodness of it 💙💙💙 What a beautiful story. I'm sure I'll read it again and again 🐎

TheAromaofBooks This one is totally going on my #bookspin list for May. I really want to reread it!! 4y

Enjoying my #DoubleSpin book so far! This is just the kind of cozy comfort read I need right now 🐎

TheAromaofBooks I love this book so hard and have been meaning to reread it FOREVER! Wesley Dennis illustrations for the WIN! ❤ 4y
wordslinger42 @TheAromaofBooks I'm loving it so far! I adored horse books when I was little and can't believe I never read this! And I completely agree about the illustrations. I just stare admiringly at them for a few minutes before I keep reading 🥰🤣 4y
TheAromaofBooks I've been rereading a lot of Henry's books the last year or two and have been happy to see how many of them hold up. I cried when I read Stormy!! I used to check out a different one of her horse books from the library every week when I was growing up. 4y

wordslinger42 @TheAromaofBooks I'm wanting to read more of her books as well (and I'm sure I'll cry 😅)! My mom grew up reading her books from the library, too. My grandpa would pay attention to which books she checked out most often and then he would buy a copy for her own collection 😊 4y
TheAromaofBooks Awww that's so sweet!!! When I was in high school, our library had a big discard sale, and I was able to score a few of the actual copies I had checked out when I was little!!! Those are some of my favorite editions. 4y
wordslinger42 @TheAromaofBooks How fun! I love library sales! And I always think the old/original editions of books are the best 💜 4y

Usually I love used books because they are cheap, but last week I found some childhood favorites in the editions I originally read and had to have them.

Echo OMG! 😍😍😍 I keep an eye out for these and the serendipity books for my girls! I have had some random luck with Cosgrove‘s books but haven‘t found these yet!! 6y

#FunFridayPhoto I was a walking stereotype as a young girl and looooved books about horses. I discovered this book in the library in 5th grade (?) and loved it so much that my teacher bought me a copy. This is that copy. Not bad for a 24ish year old book!
