Alaska | James A Michener
In this sweeping epic of the northernmost American frontier, James A. Michener guides us through Alaska s fierce terrain and history, from the long-forgotten past to the bustling present. As his characters struggle for survival, Michener weaves together the exciting high points of Alaska s story: its brutal origins; the American acquisition; the gold rush; the tremendous growth and exploitation of the salmon industry; the arduous construction of the Alcan Highway, undertaken to defend the territory during World War II. A spellbinding portrait of a human community fighting to establish its place in the world, "Alaska "traces a bold and majestic saga of the enduring spirit of a land and its people. Praise for "Alaska" Few will escape the allure of the land and people [Michener] describes. . . . "Alaska "takes the reader on a journey through one of the bleakest, richest, most foreboding, and highly inviting territories in our Republic, if not the world. . . . The characters that Michener creates are bigger than life. "Los Angeles Times Book Review" Always the master of exhaustive historical research, Michener tracks the settling of Alaska [in] vividly detailed scenes and well-developed characters. "Boston Herald" Michener is still, sentence for sentence, writing s fastest attention grabber. "The New York Times""

#Chunkstersof2023 Here are some chunksters I own and ought to read soon. @Andrew65 and I plan on reading a chunkster a month in 2023. Anyone else interested? @EadieB

EadieB I got some chunksters hanging around my house! I‘ll join in and read them! 1y
Tove_Reads @eadieb 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 Was pretty sure you would have “a few” just hanging around 😂🤷🏼📚 1y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I have to go dig them out! I‘ll post them when I find them! 1y
See All 21 Comments
Andrew65 Used to love James Michener but most probably not read him in 0 or more years, sure they should be available on archive.org. I‘m keen to give anything a try.
I also have a few Chunksters by Edward Rutherfurd on my Kindle, they‘re usually great reads & remind me a bit of Michener.
I‘ll be sorting my library out in Jan, needs an overhaul again so will see what other Chunksters I have. We should possibly target a point in the month to start them.
1y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb I think some Micheners might take me the whole month to finish 🤣 But, let me know if you find something interesting. Would be fun to read a few as buddyreads! Yes, I have some Rutherfords as well. I still haven‘t sorted out my library after my move, but found these few fairly quickly. 1y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Same for Rutherfurd, they are BIG books. 1y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Indeed. I like big books and I cannot lie 🤣🤣🤣 But it would give us time to figure out the reading routine if we have the full month. Happy to discuss the same books we choose to read at the end of those months! 1y
Andrew65 Yes I was just thinking of a start date during the month for each one, e‘g. 15th and can then read as we can fit them in before the 15th of the next month and the next book. Need to decide if we are all reading the same book or reading our own Chunksters. Would be better if we read the same ones obviously. (edited) 1y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Works for me. I think it‘ll be a mix of reading the same and reading our own. Should we do what we did some years ago? Suggest several books, all 3 of us, and then vote, and pick one from everyone‘s list? @EadieB 1y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 sounds good to me. Let me know what we are reading and when. 1y
Andrew65 @EadieB Sounds good to me too @Tove_Reads 1y
Tove_Reads @eadieb @andrew65 We could do a buddy read of chunkster every second month, so we choose two books from all of our suggestion lists. That also give us time to finish the book within two months if life gets in the way. 1y
Tove_Reads @eadieb @andrew65 Any two of these you prefer? 1y
EadieB @Tove_Reads doesn‘t matter to me. @Andrew65 I can get any of these from my library so check with Andrew to see what he can get. (edited) 1y
Tove_Reads @eadieb Yes, waiting for his choices. It‘ll be a tough year 🤣 Happy to be distracted by books, so not a problem! Had a tough day today so discussing books made my day. @andrew65 1y
Andrew65 @EadieB @Tove_Reads I‘m fairly easy and they are all available on archive.org, but I do fancy Alaska. 1y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Always good to discuss books and what we are reading. Hope the day improves. 1y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Might go for Archive myself because I‘m not used to holding chunksters in my hands anymore 🤣 1y
Tove_Reads Looks like 2023 will be a great year of historical fiction. Read very few this year. Been too focused on crime. Feel like a serial killer 🤣🤣🤣 I‘ll read all four, but should we go for Alaska and Rome as buddy reads? @andrew65 @eadieb Now only waiting for Andrew‘s suggestions 1y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Alaska and Rome sound good to me. @Andrew65 1y
Andrew65 @EadieB Happy with those 😊@Tove_Reads 1y

Yep, I did it. All 1,275 pages! I‘m not sure we‘ll ever see another historical fiction writer like James Michener. He was supremely talented at spewing lots of facts, yet making you enjoy it!

Booksnchill I would buy myself a Mitchner paperback every summer to take on my month long excursions with my grandparents- this was the 70‘s and at that age, and with only “pocket money” I was looking for value (i.e. fun with a high page count) and Mitchner never disappointed! 2y
Readerann @Booksnchill What a great bookish memory! Have you read them all? I‘ve only read four, but need to move the others up on my TBR. 2y
Booksnchill I think I have read them all - I was quite a binge reader and a completist as a teen! I have not gone back to re-read though and really haven‘t thought about those books in decades but I do remember living wholely in his worlds for the course of a summer! Happy reading! 2y

I listened to this on audio and it was about 50 hours long, so it took me a while to get through it. I mostly enjoyed, but - like most of Michener's epic novels - it dragged a bit at times. I feel like I learned a lot about Alaska.

1. Here‘s a pic I snapped yesterday of the thick snow falling in my backyard!

2. I believe in May it‘ll be by 5th Litsyversary. I‘ve always been a big reader but have never gotten so involved in any reading community as I have on Litsy. I love the love for books and each other that we have here!

But in Alaska the sun goes down before 4 pm in the winter...

ElizaMarie The sun goes down here around 430pm and it‘s driving me nuts!!! 3y
SamAnne 4 pm straight up today for me. Sigh. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sunset is 4:30 here in PA right now too, although it was very overcast today so it felt more like 3:30pm (why do we change the clocks and do this to ourselves?) 3y

It was good, but LONG. It took me 2 months to listen to the 57 hour audio. Because it was so long and covered so many time periods, events, families/people/characters, some sections were more interesting to me than others. (Although it‘s so long ago now, it‘s hard to remember), I think I liked the section at the start before humans. I also particularly enjoyed the gold rush and the characters that appeared then and continued later on.

nichollinlove And I thought 21 hours was long!! Kudos to you for finishing it!! 4y

Prompt: Alaska

James Michener classic Alaska is the first book I thought of. Wonderful historical novel. The picture is of Denali which we used to call Mount McKinley but was renamed recently to the native American word for the mountain. Tidbit: Denali means high one.

There's just something so breathtaking and beautiful about snow covered mountains. I bought this as a Kindle deal a while ago mainly for the setting of the novel and that cover. Hoping it's good! #judgedbyitscover #latepost #marchintoreading @RealLifeReading

Suzze I bought this book in hardcover in 1990. I started it in 2008. In 2009 I took it to Texas with me when I went to stay with my new grand twins for a month. Foolish. Who has time to read with newborn twins? It is now 2017 and I am on page 376. 7y

I want to go to Alaska! Not a cruise, no, I want to go into the interior. I have a friend, @Betty knows her too, that lives in North Pole, Alaska. I am obsessed with books set in Alaska. I have North Pole as one of my locations in Weather Bug, just so I can see what's happening there. This time of year they have very short days, sunrise is at 10:46, sunset at 3:07. That's a little over 4 hours. Here's what it is right now. #ReadJanuary #lovecold

Notafraidofwords I don't drink alcohol because I have gastritis but if I lived there, I would drink every day just to get through it. I hate the cold. 7y
underthebelljar I'm fascinated by Alaska as well. I would love to go there some day. 7y

CouronneDhiver Go for it... what an adventure! 7y
tricours That's about as far north as where my mother is from in Sweden. I've always liked the north, but I never get to go there anymore 😔 7y
Cortg My hubby goes to Alaska quite a bit for work. He loves it any time of year and he's often in what I would consider the middle of nowhere. Me, I'd prefer Hawaii! 7y
Suzze @Cortg Hawaii's constant nice temps must be nice. @DebinHawaii will tell us. But I'd hate not having cold at all. 7y
DebinHawaii @Suzze @Cortg If I tell you it got to 59-60 degrees last night and I was cold would you hit me? 😆 This time of year is nice but summer during no trade winds times, the humidity gets a bit much. Still I cannot complain too much. 7y
Suzze @DebinHawaii 60 is Swimming weather! 😁 7y
Gayan I went to Homer, Alaska in July and it was the best trip. Alaska is fabulous. 7y
Betty @Suzze when I was there during the summer, never saw it dark (night) for a whole week. I'd wake up at 2 AM, look out the window and still light enough to see trees etc. am so tempted to rent a car and drive up to North Pole and above the Arctic Circle instead of Carol coming down to Fairbanks. 7y
Suzze @Betty Either lots of sun or very little, both seem weird. If only our bodies were like solar panels and could store the sun until winter. 😜😜 7y
MyNamesParadise Alaska has always fascinated me for some reason! 7y
GlitteryOtters I've been to Alaska in the winter, but not any place that cold! We just went to Anchorage, Girdwood, Palmer & Wasilla, plus up to the Matanuska Glacier. I think the coldest it got was somewhere around zero. Not sure if I could stand the Interior for long (although, I would love to be at either the start or finish of the Yukon Quest sled dog race at least once & that would require either Fairbanks or Yukon Territory in February which would be COLD) 7y
Suzze @GlitteryOtters I'm envious that you've been there. My friend goes to the Iditarod start (I think it's the start) every year. 7y
GlitteryOtters @Suzze if your friend went in 2008, I was there, too! First time I met my little Husky in person was at the ceremonial race start that year--she moved down to live with us a year later. My friend was running her first Iditarod that year). 7y
LauraBrook My uncle (who recently passed) lived outside of Fairbanks since the 60s. I grew up with tales of -30 below temps and 10+ feet of snow on the regular. When we visited when I was 5 or 6, I vividly remember playing with a frisbee in the yard and suddenly being told to go to bed bc it was 2 in the morning - and still super light out! It's beautiful but I think I'd have a hard time adjusting. Hope you get to go, and sometime soon! 7y
Cortg @DebinHawaii Nope! I get cold at night in the low 60's. I definitely wouldn't hit you! Putting gas in my car last night in the 20's was brutal for me! 7y
Cortg @Notafraidofwords My friend's son thought it would be cool to go to Univ. Of Alaska Fairbanks. He came home a year later. He said all they do is drink cause it's too cold to do much else 😂 7y

"I like big books". Hmmm. But, do I? I've mentioned this before....I bought Alaska (all 868 pages of it) in 1988. I have started it a few times in those 28 years. But, every time something jumps in (a book group book, a favorite author's new book, or whatever) and I still haven't finished it. I still have the bookmark in it from my last attempt-page 326. #Booktober #bigbooks #catsoflitsy

Annl What a great photo! 8y
Betty I picked Michener too. Lots of other big books I could have chosen: Thornbirds, Gone with the Wind (read in one sitting when I was13), Pillars of the Earth. I'm surprised you didn't have a pix of your Stephen King books for your big books theme. 8y

The movement of animals across the bridge was by no means always in one direction, for although it is true that the more spectacular beasts—mastodon, saber-tooth, rhinoceros—came out of Asia to enrich the new world, other animals like the camel originated in America and carried their wonderful capacities into Asia.
