I love Towles‘ writing and imagery. Loved this novel and the characters. However, 4 stars rather than 5….the ending didn‘t completely land for me. As I am on a month long road trip, it was a good choice! And one of those novels I started this year and hadn‘t finished, only because of my epic reading slump.

I truly disliked the first half of this book (at 576 pages long total, that‘s a lot of pages to slog through of not liking something) and I hated Duchess. Anything else will be a spoiler. My book club made me read this and although the last half was much better…this book just didn‘t hold my attention, especially Sarah, Ulysses and The Pastor‘s sections. (35)

There were moments of incomparable joy interspersed with intense violence and extreme sadness. Towles wrote in such a way that you forgot the instability of the boys. Each one had flaws and something that made you want to hug them, to know them in real life. I also loved the way that Dumas Three Musketeers, the Count of Monte Cristo, and Greek myths paralleled the travels of our young protagonists.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ One of the best books I‘ve ever read. A modern hero‘s journey with characters that I will never forget. Intricate storytelling which reminded me of The Odyssey and Of Mice and Men.

1 I loved my stick shift VW's. My dad put me in my first one and said 'drive'. And I did, jerky at first of course! But my stick shifts got me through many snow storms and lousy roads

Another must read author. I love the characters that Towles creates, such depth. This book gave me all the feels. I knew I was invested when I was screaming to myself, Noooooooooo! I did not want this story to end. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gosh, that was a thumping good read. He's amazing at creating a story and writing it in such a simple yet in depth fashion.
This did not disappoint!

great characters. i love billy especially! each character is brought to life so well and so uniquely. kept me interested. want to check out his other works.

It took me a while to warm to this one. But I‘m glad I persisted

Oh man what a journey this book is! Towes has done it again. New fav from him for sure. This book gave me vibes like This Tender Land by William Kent Kruger also, probably from all the traveling. There's definitely some quotes I really enjoyed, and I loved the Greek mythology references, having made my way through 2/3 of the Mythos trilogy. 5 star!

The multi POV that allows the reader key insight into every character. At times the plot moves fluidly or jumps forward and back Revealing just enough to uncover interesting character facts at the perfect moments. Age is secondary but a surprising background character juxtaposed to the drama that unfolds when each character unveils the perfect trait to match the moment.

I loved this book. It made sense when all the characters met up with each other, even though, in reality, that wouldn‘t happen. I liked the characters and rooting for the brothers.

Wow, great writing and character devo, but incredibly slow going!

I like “A gentleman in Moscow” and I like this book more. So impressed by the author‘s elegant writing style and his way to revive every character. However, this book is not perfect. For example, the last few chapters are not as good as previous and the narrative of the eight year old boy is too matured. That‘s said, over all I still like this book!!🤪🤣

A good companion for an unexpected emergency trip over a holiday weekend.

Once again Amor writes exquisite, well developed characters in this 50's road trip of redemption and friendship. Former juvenile offender Emmett tries to piece his life together when his old friends, Duchess and Wooley, escape their work camp and convince him to take trip on the Lincoln Highway for a financial opportunity. What follows is a beautifully written piece of literature multi-layered by human experiences and morality.
