I enjoyed reading this novel. The characters were diverse and interesting. My heart broke when I read descriptions of the death of two people. It was a difficult summer for Cork and his friends. I enjoyed the storytelling ability of the author. 4.5/5

I liked this book. You can see the glimmers of the man Cork will become and the forces that shaped him into that man. I couldn‘t understand though why it took so long for Cork‘s father, Liam, to question a particular suspect who seemed obvious to me from pretty early on. #audiowalk

I‘ve got about 3 hours left in this book. It‘s interesting to see Cork as a 12 year-old boy. We‘ve gotten glimpses of him at that age before, but this is the first full-length novel where we get to see him with his parents. #audiowalk

I wasn‘t in the mood for either The Mystery Writer or David Copperfield, so I went with a world I‘m really familiar with — that of Cork O‘Connor. I think I just needed something I didn‘t have to concentrate on. Cork is only 12 here, and his father is alive. #audiowalk

Book zero that takes you back to the beginning of Cork O‘Connors summer when he begins to follow in the footsteps of his father the sheriff of Aurora. Good murder mystery mixed with historical background of the results of our govt relocating Native Americans. Will I have to continue this series? Probably!

I love every book I‘ve read my this author.This book did not disappoint.I feel like I know many of the characters personally.Cork seems like such a great kid!I can‘t wait to read the next book in this series to see how he becomes as he matures.I love this authors unique ability to describe the settings where this story takes place.It sounds like such a beautiful area.I highly recommend this book.It‘s also a good mystery that kept me guessing.

Read this because of my mother‘s rather forceful recommendation, but ended up really enjoying the mystery/coming-of-age story. Will likely pick up more of Krueger‘s Cork O‘Connor series at some point and might bump This Tender Land higher up my TBR list (it‘s been sitting patiently on my shelf for years).

Book 18 of the CorkO‘Connor series-1 to go! And they have all been great⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This one takes us back to cork‘s childhood age 12, when his dad was still alive. A young girl runaway and a fifty year old Ashinobeg man are murdered within days of each other near the Boundary Waters…

I probably would have never picked up this book if it weren‘t for one of my book clubs and I am so glad I read it. Engaging and well written… I may have to check out more by this author!

Strangely I didn‘t give a single 5 star rating in February, but many 4 stars. Out of them I chose these two for #12BooksOf2022, and Lightning Strike as THE book, because I fear Coben will otherwise get cocky because he was already chosen for January 🤣🤣

Not terrible, but a bit long. And if the dad called his son “Son” one more time, I was gonna bail.

This book is a prequel to the Cork O‘Connor series and takes place in 1963 and Cork is twelve-years-old. Cork‘s father, Liam O‘Connor, is Aurora Minnesota's sheriff and Cork helps his father solve a few murders. I have read and enjoyed Krueger's writing which is excellent throughout the whole series.

If you‘re a fan of Krueger‘s Cork O‘Connor, you‘ll love this. If you enjoy a well-written mystery, you‘ll love this. If you enjoy a great coming of age story, you‘ll love this. In short, highly recommended.

In Lightning Strike, we meet Cork as a 12 year old. He and his friends stumble on the apparent suicide of Big John Manydeeds. Striving to find the truth leads Cork to an understanding of his Objibwe heritage and his place in the world.

This is a very entertaining prequel to an existing series that deals with murder, racism and indigenous issues. It is a wonderful recommendation for mystery fans and unfortunately the issues facing the town in Minnesota do not seem so remote from those found in the present day. I really enjoyed it and because it is a prequel it can be read as a stand alone.

Thanks to Simon & Schuster and #BookClubFavorites for gifting me this #ARC. As much as this novel is a solid mystery it‘s also a wonderful coming of age story. When 12yr old Cork and his buddy stumble upon the dead body of a revered tribal elder, Cork‘s childhood will be irrevocably altered.
This book is a prequel to the beloved Cork O‘Connor series. I enjoyed the historical fiction aspects of the novel but I found some parts hard to believe.

Gratitude to Simon & Schuster for the ARC of the upcoming Lightning Strike by William Kent Krueger. Before this I‘ve read one of Krueger‘s novels which was This Tender Land. He‘s a skilled writer of story and structure and it read very much like a classic. I am very interested though to dig into this new mystery.
