What Happened to You?
What Happened to You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing | Oprah Winfrey, Bruce D. Perry
Through this lens we can build a renewed sense of personal self-worth and ultimately recalibrate our responses to circumstances, situations, and relationships. It is, in other words, the key to reshaping our very lives. Oprah Winfrey This book is going to change the way you see your life. Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking Whats wrong with you? to What happened to you? Our earliest experiences shape our lives far down the road, and What Happened to You? provides powerful scientific and emotional insights into the behavioral patterns so many of us struggle to understand. Here, Winfrey shares stories from her own past, understanding through experience the vulnerability that comes from facing trauma and adversity at a young age. Joining forces with Dr. Perry, one of the worlds leading experts on childhood and brain development, Winfrey and Dr. Perry marry the power of storytelling with science to better understand and overcome the effects of our pasts. In conversation throughout the book, the two focus on understanding people, behavior, and ourselves. Its a subtle but profound shift in our approach to trauma, and its one that allows us to understand our pasts in order to clear a path to our futureopening the door to resilience and healing in a proven, powerful way.

I can‘t seem to sit down and read with my eyeballs this week, but I made it through some audio material while I did stuff like transform this boring little Ikea table into an interesting nightstand!

A friend discovered WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU? by chance last week, loved it, and recced it to me. Now we‘re both running around telling people they‘ve gotta read it. It‘s illuminating for anyone who wants to better understand society. #audiocrafting

It‘s cool that Oprah Winfrey has partnered with scientific researchers and experts to co-author books on their areas of expertise. I‘m so glad I listened to the audiobook of this.

Finished this morning. Excellent if you want to learn more about trauma and resilience and how to support people who experienced it, or understand yourself better. The most important takeaway - it is never too late to heal.#psychology#trauma#healing#childhooddevelopment

I bored this as an audiobook from my library. I will be buying my own copy. This gives huge insight into human behavior based on life experiences. It helps me to understand the generational little 't' trauma in my own family and how better to approach my students when they are disregulated.

Alternating between this book and some lighter fiction tonight. Really enjoy the conversational narrative between Oprah and Dr. Perry as they discuss how trauma impacts life. They weave stories and information together in a well balanced way to not make it too heavy emotionally or informationally.

Highly recommend the audiobook, it feels like an interview session between Oprah and Dr Bruce Perry. Excellent job of weaving together neuroscience, psychiatry, psychology, Dr Perry‘s clinical case studies, and Oprah‘s own trauma and years of work interviewing various trauma survivors.

I‘ve been revisiting this book for sometime now. It‘s too intense to finish in one session. I‘d definitely recommend it to anyone who has gone through trauma or anyone trying to understand another person/colleague/friend.

I was VERY surprised by how much I liked this. I'm super skeptical of celebrities telling us how to live our lives or how to be happier, but since this is based on actual brain science (and co-written by a doctor) I was intrigued. It gave me a ton of perspective on some difficult relationships in my life. I highly recommend this. Oprah and Dr. Perry both read the book, too, which made it even better, imo.

Kangaj1 I really appreciated this one too, and I agree on the audio. We read a bunch of trauma books years ago related to adoption and I found this to line up with what we learned but for a more general audience. 2y

The book was so informational. Anyone who works with children should Make this a must read. I loved the audiobook and listening to the discussion from Oprah Winfrey and Dr Perry. Highly recommend

No other self help book I have read has reasonated with me as much as this one has. This book delves into what made us who we are today. I always knew that our childhood developmental stages and our experiences during these stages determines who we become and how we deal with life's challenges and experiences in our adult life. A truly life changing read, if you read any self help book this year, I highly recommend it be this one.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I listened to this and thought it was great. Dr Perry brought information and experience. Oprah brought experience and stories. It was difficult to listen to at times because of my own trauma but it was not overwhelming for me. I have quit other books like this but felt this one was a good balance. I will prob just listen again to it a second time right away.

So, I bailed on this book. It‘s not because the content isn‘t filled with knowledge, it‘s because it felt hopeless. I don‘t recommend this book for anyone who suffers from trauma. It is very triggering and made me feel like “what‘s the point of trying?” It may be a great book for those without trauma to understand those that have it. Listen to podcast: https://www.bookinterrupted.com/episodes-podcast/episode/4170402d/what-happened-...

ElizaMarie Thank you for this review. I had considered picking it up, but I have a very extensive trauma history and do not need to put myself through things like that ... Thanks again! 3y
SarahBookInterrupted @ElizaMarie You are welcome! I have done a lot of healing and work regarding my childhood trauma and this book sent me back into dark places. And I‘m in a really good place right now. It‘s written as an education rather then helping those with trauma continue to work on their healing. Two of the Six members of Book Interrupted were triggered by it. We are posting a blog next Sunday with other resources on trauma. www.bookinterrupted.com/blog 3y

Instead of asking people “What‘s wrong with you?” we should be asking “What happened to you?” Oprah and a brain scientist talk about how trauma causes adult maladaptive behavior. I‘m listening to the audiobook and it comes across a bit like a podcast honestly! The science isn‘t too complicated to understand and they‘re using a lot of real world examples showcasing what concept they‘re trying to put forth. Enjoying this one @ 1.2x speed 🙇‍♀️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I listened to this on audio which was a great format. It discusses several of the same concepts as The Body Keeps the Score but was easier to understand for a non-psych-major like me. I recommend this for any and all people interested in the way trauma affects us. It‘s absolutely excellent.

Completely fascinating. The book is presented as a conversation, in layman‘s terms and with specific examples that help you understand the concepts introduced. Dr. Perry has done a lot of research over the last few decades on the impact of trauma on children and how that plays out into adulthood. He also addresses how healing and building resilience are possible.

GingerAntics I may need to read this. 3y

4/5 ⭐️
The science of understanding trauma and the brain… I find myself understanding my knee-jerk, unsaid/unexpressed reactions, thinking, “That‘s just your lizard brain talking.” I listened to this book on Scribd, and loved the conversational format between Oprah and Dr. Perry. I wish they delved more instances of trauma, I felt left wanting more, but this was a fabulous read. A lot of people said this is a book everyone should read and I agree!

Hands down one of the best audiobooks of the year for me. I approached with intimidation, expecting so much to go right over my head but the conversational approach to topics combined with stories, reflections, and techniques have me already adding this to my list to reread. It's honestly fantastic and worth your time. The audiobook is narrated by the author's and I'd recommend this format due to the conversational dialog within.

I think this should be required reading and I wish our school board ran more in services on how to help/support children coming to us with trauma than math

ncsufoxes I just bought this & it‘s on my pile. I really want to read it since my thesis is on Attachment/ACEs. I‘ve become very interested in trauma & the impact it has on learning. As you said these are the things that need to be addressed first. 3y
mcctrish @ncsufoxes BP talks about the order of addressing things to meet needs impacted by trauma, by taking into account growth and development that gets de-railed in children with trauma and how behaviours show you where these are and then how to rebuild because our brains can learn and grow with the right tools and experiences 🤯 3y

I loved this book. I immediately started telling people that I need for everyone who works with the clients at my work in any capacity, as well as all the clients themselves, to read this book!Such brilliant discussions, and Oprah actually does a great job of helping Dr. Perry bring it down to a level people without psych training can understand. Plus, the audiobook sounds like a conversation between the 2 of them. Definitely recommend to everyone
