First read in March of this year, my December reread confirms, this is my favourite book read in 2023. Everything it makes me feel, how it talks about grief, loss, forgiveness, humanity, redemption, letting go, love, belief...the fully developed characters, the funny and poignant moments, casual queer rep, the unique fantasy elements. I was worried that it wouldn't hit me the same way the second time but I was laughing and crying all over again.

Robotswithpersonality There is an author's note at the beginning concerning the content, and as the acknowledgements state at the end, I don't know that this could heal someone, but I know that it aches in the best way, as much the feeling of when you smile too much as when you cry too hard. ❤️ 3mo

It's perhaps odd that I love TJ Klune's cosy fantasies so much. Generally, I steer away from the whimsical and the saccharine. Under the Whispering Door has that otherworldly, fairytale feel that I don't always connect with.

But who am I kidding? This was thoroughly charming. It brought a smile to my face and a tear to my eye. Charon's crossing felt like home, and the story tugged on my heartstrings in all the right ways.

Book #36
3/5
It really bothers me when the synopsis on the back of the book is misleading. This one led me to believe that it's about a dead man trying to decide how to spend his last week on earth before crossing over. In reality, it's more than halfway through the book when he is given that time line. There are good parts, but overall I found the story underwhelming.

Questo libro è fantastico e ti fa riflettere su argomenti importanti e proprio per questo lo consiglio dai 14 anni in sù. È triste ma la ironia dei personaggi sdrammatizza tutto.

Finally got around to reading this one prompted by my #AuldLangSpine list from @Laughterhp & while The House in the Cerulean Sea edges out as my favorite, this is a close second. I love the ability Klune has to make me both laugh & cry to & grow & redeem his characters. I have been staying away from “sad books” for a while now as it doesn‘t help my depression, but the sad moments of grief & loneliness are served with a big side of humor & hope.💙

emz711 I just checked Libby and there was no wait-list for this one! #checkedout 10mo

Heart achingly beautiful. I think this might be my favourite book, ever.
Laughing and crying simultaneously doesn't happen to me often reading books, but it's a manifestation of the book itself, there's sadness, even spookiness, but also joy, strength and so much love, empathy and forgiveness, redemption. 1/3

Robotswithpersonality The personal context for this story breaks my heart a little bit, but I'm grateful for its existence, and any comfort it may have rendered the author in its creation. I appreciate the time taken to thank the sensitivity readers in the author's acknowledgements, in the context of writing characters of colour as a white author. 2/3 12mo
Robotswithpersonality It's not rep identified in this story, but I think the way this asexual author chooses to tell a story about falling in love speaks to me as a demisexual because the physical attraction may be present but is not overly emphasised/made the initial catalyst for growing closeness.

Everything I wanted (needed?) and more.

Heed the author's note at the beginning re: trigger warnings. 3/3

This begins when Wallace dies—ghosts in October, yay! The hill he has to climb, development-wise, is a tad steep, but that‘s the only real complaint I have. It‘s wholesome, cute, and full of vivid characters. It made me both laugh and cry, sometimes simultaneously, which in my book is endorsement enough. If you liked The House in the Cerulean Sea, chances are you‘ll like this, too. The main theme there was acceptance—here, it‘s grief.

Ok Littens. I need some help!

I keep hearing about these books but I haven't tried one yet. Never thought about it.

Today, our library announced that TJ Klune is coming to our tiny town for a reading/signing next week and since we never have ANYONE come here....I have to go! 🤣

Which one do I buy?

ImperfectCJ I recommend The House in the Cerulean Sea. My family and I loved that one but didn't really get into Under the Whispering Door. I finished it, but they (two teens and my spouse) decided to bail. 1y
ICantImReading I also liked The House on the Cerulean Sea the best, but they are both good! 💙 1y

Without giving too much away, this book touches on important topics that are rarely discussed like grief, suicide, loss, and death/ dying. This book allows the characters to touch on the various layers and complexities of death. This book asks “what will we do with the time we have left?“ and “what if after we die we start to live?“

A beautiful read examining grief, love, death, and moving forward all in Klune's usual humorous style. I enjoyed all of the character growth throughout, and liked seeing so many versions of moving forward. Unfortunately, I never quite bought into Wallace as a cruel, horrid character despite the first few chapters because he doesn't seem to stick to that identity for long, which made it hard to buy into his character overall. #LGBTQ #Ghost

BookmarkTavern I‘ll admit, that change in character is actually one of the things I loved the most about this book. ❤️ That shift from casually cruel and thoughtless to empathy and compassion was exactly what I needed last year. 2y
Kenyazero @ozma.of.oz It is a pretty great change! Even though I didn't buy into his undeveloped, thoughtlessly cruel self, I still appreciated the change as it occured. That is such a satisfying element of this story! 2y

Not as good as Cerulean but still really really good. I was reading this and watching The Good Place at the same time (not on purpose) and it really got me thinking about what this all means. I didn't like the ending. But the characters were all so charming, I can look past it.
I'm curious what tea Hugo would make me. Hopefully chai 🤞

8.13.22

BookmarkTavern If you don‘t mind, I‘d be curious to know what you didn‘t like about the ending? 2y
The.Great.Catsby @ozma.of.oz thanks for asking! I was hoping Wallace would go through the door. And then, when it was Hugo's time, they would find each other again. I was hoping for some beautiful other side of the door chapters. But instead, he was just made ~sort of~ human. I think overall, it just left me wanting more story. Maybe it was my own selfish desire of wanting the answers, but also, it felt a little unfinished to me. I presume you liked the ending?! 2y
BookmarkTavern Hmmm… It felt a little bit like a cop out to me? Like, that was the predictable happy ending, but I couldn‘t figure out how else I would have wanted it to end? But I loved the rest of the story so much, I kinda just forgot about feeling unsatisfied? 😅😅 2y
See All 6 Comments
The.Great.Catsby @ozma.of.oz yes! A cop out, I totally agree. I still wanted a happy ending. But a different happy ending. The book still gave me that feeling of goodness overall. So I'm happy with it. I'm excited to read other TJ Klune books! 2y

I like the premise of this novel, and I like Wallace's development, but overall I found the portrayal of the afterlife cliched and the book as a whole overly sentimental. My family loved The House in the Cerulean Sea and we read it together twice, but they got bored with this one, and I ended up finishing it on my own.

ImperfectCJ And for those who looked at this review when I first posted it, yes, I did call Wallace "Walter." I don't know what it is about character names, but I have a really hard time remembering them. At least I'm better with real-life people's names. 2y

I read about 20% and decided to pull the plug - I spent a lot of time reading to get to that point - clear sign that I was not invested/interested - I liked the premise (what happens when you die and a man getting a second chance at life)- it moved too slow for me - I was ready for the characters to move on before the author was 😅

#BookSpinBingo - moving on to another book 🙂

MerlinTheSlightlyAwkward I had some similar feels on this one. Friedrich is a wonderful writer, but this story wasn‘t quite my cup of tea. Oddly, I also felt like I‘d read this same exact book, but from a different author, before 🤔 2y
