pickThis is a relatable and quiet pick. The exact kind of raw introspect I craved at the end of the year. I picked it up without having remembered the setting in my hometown of Ottawa for some of it, so that provided extra fondness. It is a short read with much to learn about maple syrup and the human condition.
pickAn actress in her 60s has an onstage crisis, compelling her to retreat to her hometown. As she interacts there with people from various phases of her life, the novel contemplates life choices taken and not. I liked this book, especially the message that yes, you can go home again.
pickLulu is an actress in her 60s. She‘s been forgetting her lines and flees to the village of her past, Snow Road Station in Ontario. She becomes part of the community and starts wondering about her life and how to fill the rest of it. It is a very hopeful book showing how, despite age, you can still dream and look forward and make things happen.

Although not a favorite from the long list, I wouldn't be upset if it made the short list. It's a quiet, poetic novel of a woman in her 60s reflecting on her life. She finds herself in a location that allows her to analyze and make changes she might not have otherwise.
The setting has strong symbolism to the story, and even though this book is quite melancholy, it didn't leave me feeling emotionally overwhelmed.
