The Weed that Strings the Hangman's Bag
The Weed that Strings the Hangman's Bag: A Flavia de Luce Mystery | Alan Bradley
128 posts | 180 read | 1 reading | 60 to read
Flavia de Luce didn't intend to investigate another murder - but, then again, Rupert Porson didn't intend to die. When the master puppeteer's van breaks down in Bishop's Lacey, he puts on a show with his loyal assistant, the disarmingly charming Nialla, prone (by Flavia's estimation) to strange bruises and long, solitary cries in graveyards. While Nialla plays Mother Goose, Rupert's goose gets cooked, the victim of an electrocution that is too perfectly planned to be an accident. Putting down her sister-punishing chemistry experiments and picking up her bicycle, Gladys, Flavia uncovers long buried secrets of Bishop's Lacey, a seemingly idyllic town that nevertheless has a mad woman living in its woods, a prisoner-of-war with a soft spot for the English countryside, and two childless parents with a devastating secret. It's possible Rupert Porson's van didn't break down so accidentally in this charming hamlet. It's possible the police won't be able to solve his murder most ingenious. It's possible that his killer may help guide Flavia in way over her eleven-year-old head, and to a startling discovery that reveals the chemical composition of vengeance.

Ok, these titles and covers are so unappealing 😖 but the stories are really quite fun! This was great as an #audiobook, like listening to an old radio drama. and I realized my pronunciation of Flavia deLuce was much too continental 😂 some really charming descriptions of theatre sets and mechanics in this one too. But TW for very disturbing death of a child 😢 #mommyreads #mystery #crime #historicalfiction

After the intensity of West, I needed to shake it off with something lighter. I really found the first book delightful so I decided to pick this up after seeing the series mentioned by @reallifereading ! In looking through images that might stand in for Ms Precocious Herself, I saw this photo & couldn‘t help but laugh. It captures the guileless genius of this little girl detective who has a penchant for poisons. Flavia is full of endearing charm.

I have two other books in progress, but I just had to finish this one. Flavia de Luce is such a unique and likable character. This second book in the series is just as interesting as the first. A great balance of mystery and characters. I can‘t wait to return this to my son‘s library in a few weeks and grab book #3.

I've really fallen in love with this series and in particular, the character of Flavia de Luce! This is my second in the series and I've already got the third audiobook ready to go. Flavia is such a bright, precocious, and sometimes irritating little girl 😂 But I absolutely adore her! The stories are well-written and I feel like I'm learning something while listening as well as just enjoying a good story 😊

I didn't want this novel to end and am so glad to know that there are more books featuring this independent and intelligent character to read after this one. The author had me guessing who-dun-it until the very end of the story. Flavia is always 10 steps ahead of me and the Inspector and that's just the way I like it. Five out of five stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Rupert Porson met his end thanks to a current of electricity during a puppet show. Surprisingly that wasn't the only shocking thing to happen: the puppet had an uncanny resemblance to Robin, a young boy who died in town years ago. Puppet and puppeteer both leave the people of Bishop's Lacey shaken.
Is there a connection between the puppeteer and the death of Robin?
Leave it to history's greatest fictitious 11 year old detective, to solve the case!

I enjoyed Flavia in this one, but this came together a little too neatly for me at the end. It‘s worth just hearing her thoughts and witty comments though. The narrator for this audio book was fantastic and also helped me keep the characters straights. I seem to have trouble with that. I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another fun Flavia deLuce mystery. Flavia is just as delightful as before & I 💜seeing all those around her emerge & develop too. The electrocution of a puppeteer gives Flavia another opportunity to show off her sleuthing chops & she does so w/fun, wit, & panache. I didn‘t see the real answer until it was revealed & loved every moment spent with Flavia as she does her thing; Entwhistle voices her perfectly & I can‘t wait to listen to the next one!

Juli I love these novels! I just finished one too. And you are right about Entwhistle! She is perfect! 2y

Book two featuring Flavia de Luce. Flavia once again finds herself surrounded by murder and mystery, this time involving a puppet show, a cranky aunt and the long ago death of a young boy. She‘s brilliant, she‘s smug, but I like her. I listened to this one and really do enjoy the narrator.

I will finally admit defeat; I‘m just not a fan of Flavia de Luce. She just seems to smart-alecky and bratty for my taste. 🙅‍♀️

Okay, so this one actually was on @Tiffy_Reads #freakyfriday list. 😂 This is the 2nd book in the series, and I couldn‘t pass it up for $1. I can‘t wait to read this series, as I always hear so many good things about it. I did try the audiobook a while back but could not get in to it. Also, I LOVE these covers. 😍

monalyisha I couldn‘t get into this series either - but, to be fair, I‘m not a mystery reader *at all.* I thought that if any books were going to drag me into the genre, it‘d be these. Flavia‘s a great character! So, it truly must not be my thing. I do LOVE the covers, though! (edited) 2y

I have heard good things about this series and I decided to finally give it a chance. Unfortunately my library didn't have the first volume, but they did have the second volume and that is where I started. This feels like a stand alone mystery, I didn't feel like I was missing anything. Flavia is a likable character. It is hard to remember she is only 11 years old. She is a great detective and chemist and is sure to do good things in life.

drokka I think you can get away with starting at the second book, but had it been any further in the story, I think it would have been a bit more confusing as she starts calling back to previous mysteries. 2y
RachLovesTV Love this series! Yeah, each book is mostly standalone, but her personal history/mystery kind of winds through all the books, so I'd probably go back and read the first one before moving on to the rest. But I'm also a Ravenclaw, so 🤷‍♀️😆 2y

My final book of 2017 definitely did not disappoint. I love Flavia, she is such a precocious 10, going on 11 year old. She makes me laugh and cringe at the same time.
