Fortune favors the boldbut is a confirmed spinster daring enough to loosen the reins and accept a favor from the wicked gentleman who haunts her dreams? Lady Anne Deveril doesnt spook easily. A woman of lofty social standing known for her glacial beauty and starchy opinions, shes the unofficial leader of her small group of equestriennes. Since her mothers devastating plunge into mourning six years ago, Anne voluntarily renounced any fanciful notions of love and marriage. And yet, when fate puts Anne back into the entirely too enticing path of Mr. Felix Hartford, shes tempted to runright into his arms. No one understands why Lady Anne withdrew into the shadows of society, Hart least of all. The youthful torch he once held for her has long since cooled. Or so he keeps telling himself. But now Anne needs a favor to help a friend. Hart will play along with her little ruseon the condition that Anne attend a holiday house party at his grandfathers country estate. No more mourning clothes. No more barriers. Only the two of them, unrequited feelings at last laid bare. Finally free to gallop out on her own, Anne makes the tantalizing discovery that beneath the roguish exterior of her not-so-white knight is a man with hidden depths, scorching passionsand a tender heart.

This was a fun read, better than the 2nd book in the series. The characters grew a lot and while it‘s irritating that the series is kind of parallel, if you read them all at once I imagine it‘s fun.
Anne must decide if she‘s been honest with herself or if Hart, whom she loves to hate, is correct and she‘s lost herself to her mother‘s grief. Hidden families, witty flirtation through writing and horses makes this complex and fun.
4.5/5 stars

I‘ve enjoyed all the entries in this historical romance series (I feel like Mimi Matthew‘s is becoming an auto-read author for me). This one especially nailed all of the romance tropes it includes (childhood friends > lovers > enemies > lovers), by actually making the scenario feel realistic based on the characters‘ circumstances and the timeline of their relationship.

It‘s only appropriate that I should be settling in for a quiet Valentine‘s night in with a sweet historical romance. Unfortunately, my husband headed back to his work yesterday (he has a 2 week on, week off schedule), but at least I have a swoon worthy duke to spend my solo evening with 😉.

Side note: the page turner remote that @Saknicole gave me for Christmas has completely revolutionized my Kindle/iPad reading!

Crazeedi That's a very cool tool! 2mo
lil1inblue I am obsessed with the idea of that remote. I find I'm always hovering my thumb over my kindle in anticipation of a page turn, and sometimes it actually gets sore holding in that way! 😂 2mo
Kimberlone @lil1inblue @Crazeedi now that I have one, I am totally reliant! Can‘t go back! 2mo
Saknicole So cozy! Happy late Galentines! 2mo

Third book in the Belles of London series. #SeriesLove2024

Lady Anne and Hart (Felix Hartford) were engaged ages ago, but this fell through. Now Anne needs Hart's help (because of a matter that's dealt with in book 2) and both of them tell themselves there are no feelings left between them. Well, it's a second chance historical #Romance set in Victorian times, so...

Well-researched, with an extensive Author's note.

Enjoyable, but ⬇️

julesG Unfortunately the plot is similar to that of another book I'm currently reading. Which makes it my second entry in the "A book with a similar plot" category of the #52bookclub24 2mo

Librarybelle At least it fits the prompt! 2mo
julesG @Librarybelle I think I'd have given it 4 stars if I hadn't been reading a similar historical romance at the same time. I had a similar experience with Emily Henry's Happy Place and Steven Rowley's The Celebrants - similar and published at about the same time. 2mo
