That Was Then, This Is Now
That Was Then, This Is Now | S. E. Hinton
Another Hinton classic available in a great new package. Companion to The Outsiders, That Was Then, This is Now is S. E. Hinton?s moving portrait of the bond between best friends Bryon and Mark and the tensions that develop between them as they begin to grow up and grow apart. Now, it too is available in this great new package featuring the larger trim size, eye-catching new cover art, and all-new bonus material. And, like The Outsiders, the new edition will also maintain the same pagination as the previous edition?making it ideal for continued classroom use.

Companion to The Outsiders, this highlights the friendship of Bryon and Mark as they get older and have different interests from each other.

willaful A fav of mine when I was young, but I can guess it didn't age well! 7mo
Eggs @DieAReader It happens sometimes 😕 7mo
Eggs @willaful Might be a similar scenario to read The Outsiders now, 25 years after reading it … 7mo
TheSpineView Kudos for finishing when it was lackluster. 7mo

I loved this book as a kid and it‘s way too long since I read it last. This time, I listened to the audiobook. The ending still gets me!

Genre: Young Adult ficition
Started the book: Wed, Sep 11th
Finished the book: Mon, Sep 16th
Why I wanted to read it: I looked up books related to the outsiders, as I found the outsiders very intreseting, and found this one.
Summary: The book is about two boys who have been closer then brothers ever since Marks parents had killed eachother. They grow together, until one night chchanges both of their lives forever.

May14 The cover of this book is most certainly captivating. I would definitely want to read it! (edited) 5y

“A reputation is one hell of a thing to have; you got to kill yourself to keep it.”~
This quick, somewhat light read is about growing up, how part of growing up involves growing apart and hopefully coming together again stronger. I won't say if this is true or not for our protagonists Mark and Byron, but I will say, yes, people change, and eventually someone get's left behind, but just make sure it's the right person. If that makes sense.

No one does #wilddelinquents better than Hinton. Loved these books growing up. I just wish my copy of The Outsiders survived my adolescence.

Prairiegirl_reading Agreed!! However the fact that mine got so worn out meant that I had to treat myself to the 50th anniversary addition which is very cool. While I loved all her books The Outsiders was just so near and dear to my heart. Still is. 💜 6y
mrp27 @Prariegirl_reading Outsiders is my favorite too. I'm going to have to treat myself to a new copy 6y
CocoReads Outsiders! My favorite of all the Hinton‘s. My old copy didn‘t make it but I‘ve bought more at various times of my life and bought that 50th Anniversary edition when it came out as well. 6y

TheBookgeekFrau @Puredragonstar Correct author, wrong book 😘 You are referring to, perhaps, the most famous/well-known of all her books: 6y

Today is the first day of teaching my course Young Adult Literature. To prepare, I re-read That Was Then, This is Now, a book which had a huge impact on me when I first read it over 40 (!!!!) years ago. Interesting to read it again, especially since I recommend it so much to reluctant readers.

A lot of similar elements as 'The Outsiders' Ponyboy is one of the smaller characters of the book. It was good. But I felt like I was reading 'The Outsiders' a few years later with drugs.
