Mehso-so

This one just didn't really work for me. Part of it is that I should have bailed on this book as soon as I realized that a big part of the plot was going to be lying/withholding information/secrets. I'm just not a fan of stories where ONE CONVERSATION could solve all our problems BUT NO ONE WILL HAVE IT. The thing was, I really liked the characters and the setting, so I thought maybe it would be okay. It was not. I was stressed the entire time ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) waiting for the wheels to come off this secret and spread disaster. There is also a secondary plot where the MMC has been horrifically betrayed by his brother only a year before, but everyone acts like now it's the MMC's fault that his family can't just all get together and be happy over the holidays! He literally did nothing wrong, but because he isn't ready to just completely forgive and forget, everyone acts like he's the jerk! ⬇ 5mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) There's a balance between forgiving those who have wronged you & taking the time you need to heal from that betrayal, & it just felt like everyone was being so pushy.

I guess in the end I want my Christmas romances to be fun and fluffy, and this one was actually pretty serious. So even though the writing was good and the characters likable, I didn't really have a good time while reading it 😂

I found this disappointing after the first book. A lot of time spent in very unpleasant POVs, a lot of nasty fat-shaming, and -- as with the first -- Gamache seems far too willing to let his suspects be involved in the case. (Has he never heard of the concept of tampering with evidence?) Still, I like the characters enough, and am curious enough about the dangling threads, to read on.
