Once upon a time, not so long ago, a monster came to the small town of Castle Rock, Maine...He was not a werewolf, vampire, ghoul, or unnameable creature from the enchanted forest or from snow wastes; he was only a cop...Cujo is a huge Saint Bernard dog, the best friend Brett Camber has ever had. Then one day Cujo chases a rabbit into a bolt-hole. Except it isnt a rabbit warren any more. It is a cave inhabited by rabid bats. And Cujo falls sick. Very sick. And the gentle giant who once protected the family becomes a vortex of horror inexorably drawing in all the people around him...

You guys, I loved this book about a rabid dog and now I‘m questioning my brain. 🤣

I listened to the audio and it was well done. The 14 hours flew by and I finished it in 2.5 days. The story has a good ending - which isn‘t always the case with King - and I had a mini dog induced panic session where I sat in my car say “oh no oh no oh no” in the driveway while I waited to see what happened. 🤣

I‘ve slowly been working my way through Stephen King‘s books, reading/rereading them all in order, mixing them in with the other books from my TBR piles. Next up is a reread of Cujo. This is an old favorite that I last read, probably, over fifteen years ago. Getting started on it now.

jb72 I‘m up to The Shining which I plan to read next year. 3w

On the last day of June, Donna Trenton came back from downtown Castle Rock (the locals called it “downstreet,” but at least she hadn't picked up that particular Maine-ism yet), where she had dropped Tad off at his afternoon daycamp & picked up a few groceries at the Agway Market. She was hot and tired, & the sight of Steve Kemp's battered Ford Econoline van with the #gaudy desert murals painted on the sides suddenly turned her furious. #QuotsyOct19

Ugh I did a boo-boo...
So I fell asleep reading last night. 🤦🏻‍♀️😱
So here's what I'm going to do. I have calculated the time that I should have had yesterday and I am going to minus it from the time that my stopwatch actually says. I am going to leave the stopwatch off today and make my goal to hit the target time on my stopwatch currently.
So looks like my goal today is: 10 hours. Can I do this? Only time will tell 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

I enjoyed this, honestly more than I thought I would. There were a few parts that didn't really make sense to me, but I can overlook them.

The #audiobook narrator did a decent job capturing the Maine accent, but...man, did I hate some of her voices. The worst was Roger. She made him sound like Kermit the Frog. His wasn't the only one that sounded cartoony, either. It was bad enough that I almost bailed on audio in favor of print. #stephenking

Winston jumped up right as Cujo went in for a kill in my book. Scared the bajeezus out of me, and it scared him, too. 🤣

Honestly, though, I feel more sympathetic for Cujo than scared of him. The poor dear just needed a family who paid attention to his behavior. 💔 Also, is SK sure this isn't a horror story about marriage? The spouses in this book suck.

If you haven‘t read Cujo, you should. Not many Stephen King books bring me to tears, but this one does every time I read it. Cujo “had always always tried to be a good dog. He tried to do all the things his MAN and his WOMAN, and most of all his BOY, had asked or expected of him.”

Seriously a heartbreaking line.

BookwormAHN I didn't really like this one. The whole thing seemed like an ad for the rabies vaccine. 10mo
HufflepuffGirl90 I thought it was a good book. I‘m a vet tech and liked the perspective on how rabies can affect everyone surrounding Cujo‘s family and how easily it can be spread. It is basically an ad for rabies, as @BookwormAHN said, but being in the veterinary community I thought that was a good thing, showing why you should vaccinate 🤷🏻‍♀️ 10mo
Karkar Can someone please explain how the thing in the closet is important, I really feel like that could have been left out 10mo
HufflepuffGirl90 @Karkar I think the monster in the closet is supposed to be the ghost of Frank Dodd, who was the serial killer mentioned at the beginning. The idea, to me, was a parallel between people not realising Dodd was a killer and Cujo starting as such a good dog. Maybe even a play on reincarnation of sorts to explain the horror of what happened, since he added in “The monster never dies. It came to Castle Rock again....” 10mo
Bklover I like this one, but is definitely not one of my favorites. 10mo
AnansiGirl I‘ve read Cujo once back in HS. Oof much harder to get through this time around. The ending had me hugging my doggo nieces and nephews a bit more. 10mo
Readingismyescape @Karkar I feel like the monster in the closet is the spirit of evil. Cujo takes place in Castle Rock, like some other King stories. So many awful and unexplained things happen there. It‘s a cursed place. When I think about all the coincidences that occurred in order for Donna and Tad to end up alone in that car at Cujo‘s house, it seems like something manipulated events to make it happen. 10mo

Well... that's done. I really dislike the way King writes his women. Even in times of extreme duress, they're still polite little housewives. There's more to this book than Cujo and I didn't care about about of it. A drifter with anger issues and an itch to scratch, the advertising thing and Charity's snooty attitude. I enjoyed the parts with Cujo but that was about it.

I re-read #Cujo for the #Losersclub and it made me feel nostalgic. Everyone is always smoking and drinking in the story--just like childhood.

I do wonder what brought the disparity of life fulfillment between men and women to the forefront of Stephen King's mind while writing a horror novel about a rabid dog. But from what I've heard, he said he was drinking too much himself to remember writing the book.

This book in certain ways reminded me of the 80s slasher movies. The main reason being because along with Freddy and Jason, I was cheering for Cujo. However he wasn't really a monster just a poor dog with rabies. There were some human monsters and I personally thought most of the characters sucked. This was definitely not one of King's better books 🤦🏼‍♀️

I was listening to a podcast about the Bridgewater Triangle, and they told a story about "the black dog of Abington," which is the town I live in. In 1976, a massive black dog creature killed a couple horses. The police received over 1000 reports and people were so scared that children were escorted to school by armed guards. I asked about it on the local Facebook page, and here is a comment from one of the guys involved in investigating it!

Jilly6183 @Bookwormjillk Hi neighbor! 👋🏻 I'm from Weymouth (moved to Abington 5 years ago), and I had never heard of dog story, that's why I asked on the Life in Abington Facebook page. Have you heard of the Bridgewater Triangle though? It's interesting. Aaron Mahnke had a whole episode about it on his podcast Lore, I recommend it (not the same podcast that talked about the black dog though) 11mo
Jilly6183 @Becksbee I don't think it was his primary inspiration - he always tells this story about nearly being attacked by a German Shepard that inspired it. He also has admitted that he barely remembers writing it because he was on a massive coke binge at the time so who knows. But it sounds like it may have been part of his research at least! 11mo
Bookwormjillk @Jilly6183 I have heard of the triangle. Kids in high school were always trying to break into the Bridgewater TB hospital, and there were always rumors of missing kids in that area. Creepy stuff. 11mo

Barely out the door and I‘m noping on my attempt to join in on litsy walks. Taking Cujo for his walk though to the street curb, drop off my recycling and then hightail it back indoors.

DGRachel I would walk outside in that nonsense either! Stay warm and safe!! 11mo
AnansiGirl @DGRachel I‘ll be waiting for warmer days that don‘t require a wrapped like a mummy dress code to try litsy walking again. 🌞🚶🏻‍♀️ Hope you‘re staying warm and safe too! 11mo
DarcysMom Your picture looks cold and not so fun for walking. 11mo
AnansiGirl @DarcysMom I‘m so ready for spring to get here. 🥶 11mo

While not my favorite King, not one of my lease liked either. I forgot that you get part of the story from the Dog‘s perspective. Plus I do not understand the closet part....why do we even need that?

IamIamIam I have this coming up soon, I think. I didn't realize he tells the story from Cujo's perspective... I do recall King mentioning that he was so drugged out that he barely remembers writing it to begin with! 🤣 11mo
Karkar @IamIamIam you get several of the characters perspective in the book. I could see the drugged out part. Somethings just do not make sense. 🤓 11mo

Just a reminder that January‘s #losersclub read is #Cujo! Buy, borrow, or beg your copy and check back in later this month when we begin reading this one. I‘ll be #ghosthosting (not reading), as I don‘t do well with potential animal violence, but everyone is welcome to join in! I will also try to post an updated 2019 schedule along with reposting the full schedule later today or tomorrow (I don‘t want to spam your feeds)

Readingismyescape I‘m interested in this. I love Stephen King. How many books have you read so far? 11mo
Melismatic This sounds fun! I‘ve read a ton of King already but not Cujo...I think? Lol - I‘ll scour my library. If I can find a copy, I‘m in! 11mo
DGRachel @Readingismyescape The groups has officially finished the first 10, with Danse Macabre being the December book that gets discussed in January and is the 11th. If you do a tag search for #losersclubforever, you will find a post with the complete schedule made by @TricksyTails the original hostess. Would you like me to add you to the list of tagged people? 11mo

Typical King. Scary and heartbreaking. I wouldn‘t expect anything else.
