After finishing The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner for April's #12MonthsOfJane immediately started rereading Bloomsbury Girls. I had forgotten that Daphne du Maurier makes appearance. Quite fun since I had just finished #HashtagBrigade read of Rebecca.

Favorite part of Rebecca is descriptions of tea & gardens @ Manderley. Don't actually like any of the main characters. But I still absolutely love the book.

Crinoline_Laphroaig @BarkingMadRead 😆 I'm enjoying rereading. Especially since Author's next book takes up a character from Bloomsbury Girls. I read ARC awhile back and I'm looking forward to audiobook of 4h
BarkingMadRead I added that one as well. You are bad for my TBR 🤣 4h

Talked the fam into the Netflix version of Rebecca tonight. This is the type of messed up situation they will love, plus it has an evil housekeeper. Usually I have to watch my #hashtagbrigade movies alone so this is a big night.

dabbe 🤩🤩🤩 2d
tpixie I just put the movie on ‘my list‘. The funny thing is- the preview is so bright!! When I read the book, every scene was dark & shadowed in my mind! 1d
Bookwormjillk @tpixie Let me know if you watch it. I have thoughts 🤔 1d

Oh my gosh… this book is SO good! A Five-Star read for sure. Beautiful prose, compelling plot, secrets kept and revealed, masterful foreshadowing, and so atmospheric. Stunning.
Thank you for hosting this, @BarkingMadRead . 💖 I loved reading it with the #hashtagbrigade .
Now I can‘t wait to watch the movie - both the old and new versions.

BarkingMadRead I need to watch the movies as well 2d
dabbe The old one with Olivier and Fontaine is in my top five movies of all time. 💙🩵💙 2d
julieclair @dabbe I definitely need to watch that one. I watched the Netflix one last night, and all it did was annoy me. 😆 @BarkingMadRead 6h
julieclair @dabbe Oh yay!!! Thank you!!! 🎥🍿😀 4h

I just spent a month at Manderley…

This is a reread for me, and while I did not remember every twist and turn, I do remember the creepy vibes from this. It‘s a level of creepiness that slowly enfolds the reader and can make one shiver. That Mrs. Danvers…oh my! I loved it and am glad it was a #PemberLittens #HashtagBrigade read! #192025 #1938 #52BookClub24 #AnAbruptEnding

#Zeke #Vladimir #SebastianKitty #Xander #CatsOfLitsy

BarkingMadRead It was really creepy, esp Danvers! I don‘t remember that really bad scene from the first time! You‘d think it would stick, but it didn‘t 🤣 2d
TheAromaofBooks Same!! It was a reread for me as well, but I was surprised at some of the scenes/details I'd forgotten. 2d
Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks I know! Maybe it was Manderley‘s spell…we just could not remember all of the bad. 😂 2d

Bookwormjillk I don‘t remember the ending being so abrupt. But maybe that‘s because I go back and re-read the beginning every time. Anyway I don‘t know if I‘d be so quick to take my husband‘s word that he murdered his first wife, but only because she was mean. Still a good read though. 2d

Roary47 Thank you for including me. It‘s been fun reading with everyone. 😊 2d
5feet.of.fury @Bookwormjillk right? It seemed like he had it well planned out, except for the sailing. He exploited the power dynamic enough in his relationship with the narrator that I can‘t fully trust his word. Only showing affection towards Jan once he confesses (seems to me to manipulate her loyalty), saying he likes how naive & innocent she is etc… 2d
TheAromaofBooks I'm with @Bookwormjillk - I'd forgotten how suddenly the ending comes. I actually feel like there are a lot of things between this and them living abroad as they are in chapter 1 that I would be interested to hear about haha 2d
peanutnine What an ending! 🤯 I kinda do wanna go back and reread the first chapter now with context 2d
Clare-Dragonfly What a wild ending, yet inevitable. I do hope all the inhabitants got out okay. 2d
ElizaMarie Ooo! 2d
Ruthiella So did Jasper and the mama dog survive and do they now live happily with Frank who still manages the farms etc. ? I like to think yes. 2d
julieclair What an ending! But perfect. Rebecca‘s minions have the last word. I loved this book! It was fun reading it with all of you. 2d
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella I know Jasper did, not sure about mama? 2d
Aimeesue @5feet.of.fury I think the "naive and innocent" bit from Maxim is in comparison to Rebecca. What a horror show she was! 2d
dabbe Since the title really does say it all, Rebecca remains the dominant force throughout the whole novel. She is omni-present, and I do think she wanted Max to kill her, hoping to pin the murder on him or at least have Favell and/or Danny exact vengeance ... which is exactly what Danny appears to have done by burning Manderley to the ground. Rebecca wins in the end. Jan ends up exactly where she started, a “paid“ escort to a traveling elder. Wowza. 2d
KAO I really enjoyed reading this (and admit to finishing the book a bit early)! The 1940 Alfred Hitchcock movie (on YouTube) is quite good and follows the book rather closely. Then I found the 2020 remake on Netflix and was really perplexed by so many changes and different takes on characters—awfully disappointing in my opinion. I found the book to be better than either film—as is usually the case! Thanks again for leading the group read! (edited) 2d
willaful @KAO Hmm, think I won't watch the remake.

One big change of the 1940 movie, IIRC, is they made Rebecca's death more accidental. Interesting, that. It probably helped with the romanticizing of the novel. (Which I theorize led to Du Maurier writing My Cousin Rachel.)

@dabbe wow, excellent point! I never thought of that. At least she has job security now. 😂

2d
dabbe @willaful You are absolutely correct! I think they did that also because of the film taboos back then; you can't murder your wife and not have justice done to you, but if we make it an accident ...

Job security indeed! 🤩😂🤗
2d
willaful I'm also seeing some parallels with We Have Always Lived in the Castle, which I don't want to elaborate on too much because of spoilers. But some plot and some psychological elements. 2d
willaful @dabbe Yes, come to think of it I think that was actually in the Hayes code. Badness could not go unpunished. 2d
5feet.of.fury @Aimeesue I know I should feel that way, but I‘m so suspicious of him. Were they so toxic because he couldn‘t influence Rebecca? He‘s somewhat of a horror show himself, or was he just addled with being back & was terrible to the narrator? There‘s a lot to ponder there. 2d
5feet.of.fury I support women‘s wrongs. Justice for Rebecca. 2d
Aimeesue @5feet.of.fury It‘s not that he couldn‘t influence her - she reneged on their weird deal that she could do as she pleased in London or elsewhere, but Manderley was sacrosanct. And then kept on and on doing it. Neither of them were psychologically healthy, to put it mildly, but they are of their time in the roles/performance they were putting on. Then she manipulated him into killing her, because cancer + revenge via the guilt it would cause. 2d
5feet.of.fury @Aimeesue Oh yes, I agree with that! I just think that he set out looking for someone he could easily control for his 2nd wife 2d
Aimeesue Which absolutely worked, because, well, the entire book. Du Maurier does a great job of strewing the book with ambiguities - Maxim‘s pacing after R‘s death, bystanders‘ feelings about R, related to Jan, everyone‘s unwillingness to talk about R., with the exception of ol‘ Danny, who uses it to make Jan doubt herself. 2d
Aimeesue @5feet.of.fury Or just someone who was the complete opposite of Rebecca? She must have been exhausting! Games, games, games. 2d
Aimeesue @willaful Agree about We Have Always Lived, AND 2d
willaful @peanutnine Even though I've read it many times, I still went back and reread the beginning. I feel like I have a new take on it this time. 2d
kwmg40 Thanks for leading the group read! I really enjoyed this reread of Rebecca and all the commentary. 7h
