This collection of essays was published in 1984 and includes work from the prior decade. With the exception of 2 essays, each piece could have been published today. Black and queer women still share Lorde's experiences 40-50 years later. I'm not sure what that says about our progress as a nation. Each piece was, of course, well written and thoughtful, and well worth the read. But damn do I long for the day when this isn't so relevant.

It hasn't been a great reading month, but I did finish this beast! I've spent the better part of the year in Middlemarch. Some days it was delightful, and others it was frustrating. The characters were achingly human: I was deeply invested in their fates. The book was well worth the challenge. I've rarely seen such deep understanding of human relationships and emotions.

💙 I usually just change twice - once in the morning into my clothes, and once in the evening into my jamas. But I will wear 4-5 different cardigans or sweatshirts throughout the day. I just throw on the nearest one. 😂
💙 The tagged book from my tbr is a biography of Ann Lowe, the Black woman who designed Jackie Kennedy's wedding dress. She was credited only as a “coloured woman“ until after JFK's assassination.

I always discover music late: Shovels & Rope, a husband/wife duo that have been recording together since 2008, just popped up on my radar last week. I heard “Something Is Working“ and immediately went to listen to the full album. It's hard to pick favorites, but the murder ballad “Colorado River“ is riveting. “Love Song From a Dog“ is surprisingly beautiful. And my mom has already told me she wants “Dass Hymn“ played at her funeral.

This was a surprisingly interesting read. I did really enjoy the journey. But I can tell I'm getting older, because I was worried about her the entire book. 😅

This one was not for me. I only finished it because
1. It was a fast read
2. It was under 300 pages
3. My gummy kicked in while I was reading, and I started laughing out loud at the plot. ('Twas not supposed to be funny.)

This was such a good memoir about identity and intersectionality. It's vulnerable, honest, and beautiful. I loved how she wove stories from the Quran throughout and tied them to her own experiences. So clever.

🏈I grew up 60 miles west of Chicago, so I will always be loyal to Da Bears.
🏈I generally root for the Bears & the Lions (since I now live in MI) & against the Packers & East Coast teams. 😂 Tonight I'll be rooting for the Niners.
🏈I usually don't watch games unless it's in a group.
🏈I prefer to watch at home/at someone's home, but if I am by chance in my hometown I like to watch at our old neighborhood bar. Top notch banter.
