God how I love a memoir told through individual vignettes illustrative of large parts of the writer‘s life! When it‘s done well, as Dave has, it has more emotional impact for me. And Dave is quite the storyteller!! I love how he is a nerd and the ultimate fan of other musicians. I adore his fierce love of his daughters. And I respect how kindly he treated his band mates and friends in this memoir.

@Cinfhen you were right: this was special.

BarbaraBB I want to read this one too! 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I think you‘d love it! 3y

BarbaraBB I think so too even though I‘m not much of a Foo Fighters fan. But he seems like such a nice guy. 3y
Kimberlone This was so good! 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I‘m not a huge fan either, but this is an excellent memoir, and he is indeed nice! 3y
Megabooks @Kimberlone agreed!! 👍🏻💯 3y
AmyG @BarbaraBB He DOES seem like the most humble, lovliest guy. I really enjoyed this, too. 3y
Cortg I enjoyed his stories! It was a well done memoir 💕 3y
Megabooks @AmyG 🙌🏻💯 3y
Megabooks @Cortg absolutely enjoyable! 3y
squirrelbrain I liked this one too, although I think I would have liked it even more had I listened to it on audio. Well done on finishing the challenge! 3y
Cinfhen I‘m so glad you loved this one!!! It was so good on audio @squirrelbrain and now that the band has lost Taylor Hawkins it makes all the stories even more meaningful. I am not a fan of Foo Fighters @BarbaraBB but you‘ll become one of Dave Grohl -🥰🥰🥰 3y
peaKnit I am a huge fan, and it‘s been sad with Taylor‘s passing wondering what is next for them. No doubt, Dave will have a plan but I think it may involve reinvention, like after Nirvana ended. This book was wonderful. He is a great storyteller, his HBO series Sonic Highways tells stories of music by state of region, highly recommend, as well as his paramount series with his mom , Cradle to Stage. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @peaknit That series sounds great 3y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain the audio made the book for me, so I‘m sorry you didn‘t get to hear that. 3y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain and that you! 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I remember when that was announced. So sad. He came across like someone you‘d want as a friend: smart, nerdy, and a bit (a lot) mischievous but also super loyal. 3y
Megabooks @peaknit I had heard about cradle to the stage, but I‘ll have to check out sonic highways since I have hbo at the moment. Thanks for the heads up. I‘m very interested to see what he does next, and I really feel for him losing Taylor because they seemed so close. Very hard for fans as well. 3y
Suet624 I‘m a huge fan of the Foos and of Dave and of Taylor. I feel as if I haven‘t fully recovered from Taylor‘s death. For years I‘ve watched a Foo Fighters video almost daily. I have Dave‘s book but as is my way I have it stacked right where I can see it but not yet ready to read it. Because once I do, it will be done. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️❤️ (edited) 3y
Megabooks @Suet624 i feel that. I‘ve don‘t the same thing with favorite tv shows. There are some things you just don‘t want to end. 💜 3y

JVN is back with an essay collection that expands on his memoir, Over the Top. My favorite essay was his take on healthcare from the perspective of a queer, HIV-positive person. He had some fun talking about his hairdressing days and what NOT to do to your stylist, but then spoke more seriously about TERFs and race. He also opened up about his cannabis use and microdosing as a person with substance use issues.

Cinfhen Fun pick 💜 3y

Kitta I saw him talk last week, it was great! I can‘t wait to ready the book. 3y
Megabooks @Kitta very cool! 😎 3y
Megabooks @sarahbarnes 👍🏻💜 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen it was! 3y
Prairiegirl_reading I really enjoyed this one too. I got a couple fun “didya knows” from it also which was an appreciated bonus! I love Jonathan. Their show on Netflix is pretty interesting too. 3y

I will admit to being an Ilhan fangirl. This book covers her escape from #Somalia as a refugee and coming to the US to her college degree and work as a community organizer to her historic run for Congress and winning her seat. She talks about coming up against the Somali elders, who didn‘t believe a woman belonged in politics, and how that spurred her to build a diverse coalition of supporters. She talks briefly about her family life, too.

Librarybelle Sounds amazing! 3y

BarbaraBB I don‘t know the author (as you already thought!) but the book sounds great. 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes, very groundbreaking Congress member, and a fantastic life story! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I didn‘t know she had a book! I‘ll definitely check that out! 3y
Megabooks @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think you‘d like it! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Megabooks I think I would too. I‘ve been very impressed with “the squad” and their counterparts… new young female faces in the halls of Congress and watching how the all boys club had decided to immediately question their every move & motive. 3y

When I‘ve read her advice column, I‘ve thought she was kind of smug, especially when she talked about her marriage. So I thought this was a novel when I placed a hold at the library, instead it‘s a very real memoir about the ups and downs of marriage and raising kids. It was refreshing for her to share the imperfections of life with a mostly great husband and usually fantastic kids. Good if you‘re looking for a funny memoir or #audiobook!

Cinfhen Was this an audio for you?? It‘s in my #scribd queue (edited) 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yes, and I enjoyed it as an audiobook! 3y

This interesting pop sci book is just what I needed this weekend. #NerdVibes 🤓

Greg is a meteorite scientist, and he takes the reader through the history and current study of meteorites. From the early huge impact that formed the moon to modern hunters and prospectors, they have played a large role in the formation of Earth and how we may be able to find rare elements in the future. The #audiobook narration is great!

Megabooks #ImUnplanned #nonfiction22 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa because this was definitely an unplanned random library find, but it was good! 3y
Cinfhen Glad your beautiful nerd brain loved this…but it‘s probably a pass for me xx 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds like great fun to me!!! 3y

The Nineties: A Book | Chuck Klosterman
post image
Pickpick

I‘ve read some amazing nonfiction this year, and Klosterman‘s cultural critique of the 90s is 💯 up there near the top.

He draws seemingly disparate parts together into 12 thoughtful essays. From the politics and news to sports, TV, music, and films, he completely captures the flavor of the 90s. As a young Gen Xer, I remember the 90s, but his old Gen X perspective brought out a lot I didn‘t quite capture/understand. Highly recommend!

Megabooks @RamsFan1963 definitely worth an audible credit, imo. 3y

alisiakae I‘m spending an audible credit on this! Unless there are pictures? 3y
Kimberlone Can‘t wait to read this one. Is the audio worth it to use an audible credit? Not available from my library yet… 3y
squirrelbrain Saw a great review for this in one of last weekend‘s papers…. 3y
Megabooks @jlhammar 👍🏻👍🏻 3y
Megabooks @4thhouseontheleft I‘m not sure. I read the audiobook. It‘s very well done! 3y
Megabooks @Kimberlone I read it through the library and am considering buying it anyway, so yes, worth a credit! 3y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain count me among its admirers! 3y
Kimberlone @Megabooks awesome, thanks! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘ve enjoyed other books of his, so stacking! 3y

This was a disappointment. I‘m a fan of Jami, but this was so disorganized that I only gleaned a piecemeal sense of her life. Lots of travel, lots of book panels, and occasional explanations of her family and writing process. Yeah, just didn‘t do it for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Xe Sands does a mediocre narration job. 👎🏻 (I usually like her, but this was a poor author/narrator match for me. I wonder why they decided against Jami narrating.)

Cinfhen I‘ve seen a few reviews that were 💯 in line with your review. Very disappointing 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yeah, I‘d definitely say don‘t bother with this one. She should stick to fiction. 3y
britt_brooke I‘m listening to this now and enjoying it. The narrator sounds a lot like Jami Attenberg, so much I didn‘t realize it wasn‘t her. 🤦🏼‍♀️ But it is very stream of consciousness for a memoir which I definitely think will turn some readers off. 2y
Megabooks @britt_brooke I‘m glad you‘re enjoying it, but it definitely turned me off! 2y

Do you know the story of your favorite bookstore? Nadia tells the story of starting the independent Cairo bookstore, Diwan. They elevated books from being state-run to symbols of independent thought. Using the theme of several sections, from Egyptian history to cooking, she shares the joys and trials of running the store. We learn about her life, but the memoir stays focused more on the store and its books, employees and customers. Enjoyable! 👍🏻

Megabooks I think that‘s every challenge I‘m doing but author a month!! 😂😂 (edited) 3y

You‘ve probably read the story of OxyContin, but have you heard of Subsys? This is the shocking story of the rise of John Kapoor and Insys, a small pharmaceutical company that rocked the world of chronic pain and fentanyl in the early 2010s. They took Perdue‘s playbook into hyperdrive and payed doctors to prescribe and had an in-house department that committed insurance fraud. A must-read if you enjoyed Empire of Pain or Bad Blood! 5⭐️

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle | Barbara Kingsolver, Camille Kingsolver, Steven L. Hopp
post image
Pickpick

Kingsolver set out to be a farmer and locavore for a year in 2006, and she & her family learned many important lessons. She narrates the majority herself, going through the seasonal foods, chores, and joys each month brought. Her husband narrates his essays that provide a national perspective on their choices. Her older daughter gives meal planning tips and tips for college student locavores. My favorite was her 8-year-old daughter‘s egg business!

Scochrane26 I went to their restaurant a few years ago, but of course, she wasn‘t there. It was really good. 3y

Cinfhen @IndoorDame just reviewed this book too!! Both of your reviews make me curious to try again. 3y
Megabooks @Scochrane26 awesome! I don‘t get to the central/eastern part of Kentucky much anymore, which is sad. I find myself in Nashville much more often. But I‘d love to try her restaurant. 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen it was really interesting. I admit I‘m lukewarm on her fiction though. 3y
Cinfhen And I really liked 3y
Cinfhen I‘m attempting this one for #AAM 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I loved PB too. I‘ve bailed on FB twice. It was on Katie‘s nywd list a couple of years ago, so I feel terrible, but I‘m just not a fan. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
