IndoorDame The 5am thing was especially bizarre 🙄🤔 4mo
dabbe @IndoorDame I know this is fiction, but I thought the same thing! And I wanted to ask him, “Where did you get that so-called fact?“ If only we could talk to the characters! 😂 4mo
IndoorDame @dabbe I know!!! I would be yelling my head off at all my books if the characters could could actually hear me 😂😂😂 4mo

dabbe @IndoorDame #amensista! 🤩🤩🤩 4mo
Read4life The 5am thing was mine. I actually stopped reading and sat there for a few minutes. Really? 4mo
dabbe @Read4life I did, too! 🤩😂🤗 4mo
Bookwomble You'd be surprised at the things some British police officers are prepared to overlook in the cause of improving case completion rates 🫠 4mo
Librarybelle The 5am thing for sure! 4mo
CogsOfEncouragement Honestly, I figured they had friends in low places who would have kept tabs on him

I don't watch hardly any real crime shows - but my husband and I just watched three. Two recent cases, one in the 1980s and yeah, I believe an investigator would absolutely act like Lanner. Sad but true.
4mo
Cuilin @Librarybelle @IndoorDame @read4life so the 5 AM thing led me down dark rabbit hole. I always thought more suicides would occur during the dark winter/holidays but I was wrong and more occur during the spring on Mondays and Tuesdays. I doubt they kept records of this during Victorian times. (edited) 4mo
Librarybelle @Cuilin That‘s sad but interesting. I would have thought the dark winter and holidays as well. 4mo
Aimeesue I usually just blaze right on by the odd things Victorian police officers think/say, tbh. Criminal investigation as a science was new and pretty iffy at that point. 4mo
dabbe @Bookwomble Possible coercion within a police force? And only British? Shocking! 😱😂😊 4mo
dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement It seems to be only our head detective/main character/hero is the one who truly gets to the bottom of things in any of these stories. 4mo

CatLass007 I listened to this story yesterday and I don‘t remember any of that quote. I guess the story didn‘t really hold my interest. 4mo
IndoorDame When I read it I assumed it was just prejudicial, the way Doyle describes the appearance of his BIPOC characters or others he has a bias against, but afterwards I wondered if it was deliberately unkind, as a kind of foreshadowing to offer us a clue towards solving the mystery. 4mo
dabbe @CatLass007 Probably not one of Doyle's best. I had a hard time coming up with some questions on this one. 4mo

dabbe @IndoorDame I thought Watson showed prejudice here (which may also mean Doyle), especially since he's a doctor. Shouldn't he be a bit more caring towards individuals with problems? Or is Doyle saying that people who are overweight should be able to control it, meaning it's a choice and not a condition. 🤔 (edited) 4mo
IndoorDame @dabbe lots of people today (even doctors) still think it‘s a choice, so I assumed that was the prevailing idea at the time 4mo
dabbe @IndoorDame Yeah, that's unfortunately true--even though there could be so many other legitimate and heart-wrenching reasons. 4mo
Read4life I definitely didn‘t get the feeling he was speaking strictly from a medical perspective. 4mo
dabbe @Read4life I wonder if Watson once had a weight problem and now has zero tolerance for it. 4mo
Read4life I don‘t know. It was definitely not his usual understanding. I‘ve lost over 100 pounds and I believe I‘m more understanding of weight “issues” of others. 4mo
dabbe @Read4life The reason I wrote that is I know someone who lost a lot of weight and now has little tolerance for her daughter who is overweight. It's hard to hear her be so hard on her kid. Maybe it depends on the person. I've lost 50 pounds, and I also am in sympathy with anyone who struggles with their weight (or anything) for any reason. 4mo
Bookwomble @IndoorDame In my therapeutic work with clients referred to bariatric services, I've been shocked more than once by the awfully insulting language used and fatphobic attitudes displayed by some medical professionals in those services. Sadly, Watson's prejudice is not, as it should be, a thing of the past. 4mo
Librarybelle I agree with everyone here…sadly, a sign of prejudice that is prevalent today. 4mo
CogsOfEncouragement I took it to describe quite a gruesome scene. 4mo
Cuilin @dabbe I think I would‘ve struggled with questions for this one too. 4mo
dabbe @Librarybelle Look at how people are being shamed for taking Ozempic. It's not even enough now that people lose weight--they need to lose it the hard way--like everyone else who lost weight before Ozempic. Why such shaming? 4mo
dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement And boy was it ever! One of the most gruesome yet in all that we've read. 4mo
Librarybelle @dabbe I know! So awful 4mo
dabbe @Cuilin I did a lot of this: 🤔🤷‍♀️🤔 4mo
Read4life @dabbe I know people like that, too. So sad. I hate when she says “if I can do it anyone can.” Not true. I also hate when she says people who‘ve had bariatric surgery have taken the easy way out. That road before and after surgery is not easy. 4mo

IndoorDame I don‘t know to what extent he‘s morally culpable, but I think it‘s bizarre that he‘s intrigued enough to travel all the way there but not intrigued enough to even use any of his basic tricks of observation to learn more about the man when he thinks he‘s being lied to. That seems out of character. 4mo
dabbe @IndoorDame That's why this one jolted my attention. Or was this yet a new trick of Holmes's? He does say to Watson that he expects Blessington to capitulate the next day. But he knows the guy's in danger, right? It seems to me like Holmes is playing God in a way. 4mo
CogsOfEncouragement I thought he just figured if “Blessington“ wanted help he should spill the beans, otherwise, “Good day sir“. This actually seemed reasonable to me. I think this crook only has himself to blame, including not telling SH. I didn't think of SH being to blame for his murder. 4mo
Librarybelle My thought too, @CogsOfEncouragement . I didn‘t think anything of the interaction. It is a little out of character in a way for Holmes, but Holmes knows there is something that Blessington is hiding, which we find out he in fact is. 4mo
dabbe @Librarybelle @CogsOfEncouragement I definitely don't think Holmes is responsible for Blessington's murder, but I do think he bears a little blame for what happened. In “The Boscombe Valley Mystery“, Holmes explains what he knows so far about the crime to John Turner, and only after that does Turner confess. Why doesn't he afford the same courtesy to Blessington to get him to confess? I saw it as out-of-character for SH. 4mo

Sorry I'm a little late, Sherlockians! Thoughts?

CatLass007 Meh. All the relevant clues were found offstage. I think the reader should know what the sleuth knows so we can figure out the mystery along with the protagonist. Conan Doyle doesn‘t seem to have held that belief. 4mo
dabbe @CatLass007 Agree 💯. Doyle also reuses similar plots: like the guy with the checkered past that comes back to literally kill him. 4mo
IndoorDame I think it‘s funny he basically opens the story by admitting he‘s been slacking in his writing lately. But that could just as easily be a way to try and write himself out of this series with the public, or try and write himself back into it (either in public perception or by attempting to actually spark his own interest again). I don‘t have a theory which one it is here… 4mo

dabbe @IndoorDame Well, we are only 3 stories away from “The Final Problem.“ I definitely see some ennui in Doyle's/Watson's writing. 4mo
Read4life I agree @CatLass007 . It makes me feel like I missed something and then realize it was never there to miss. 4mo
CogsOfEncouragement As always, I enjoyed it.

I was amused to invision: “He picked up four ends and examined them with his pocket-lens.“

I thought Blessington sounded like a SUPER made up name - and turns out it was!
4mo
Librarybelle I felt the same way, @CatLass007 @Read4life . And @IndoorDame —completely agree! As @dabbe noted, we‘re close to “The Final Problem.” 4mo
kelli7990 I liked this story. 4mo
Cuilin It seems indecent to say that this story was rather mundane, as it‘s quite good but compared to all the others it‘s a tad forgettable. 4mo
Aimeesue I didn‘t love it, but I didn‘t hate it either. I think if I‘d read it on its own instead of in a collection, I‘d be fine with it. 4mo
dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement A totally ironic name! #notblessedatall 4mo
dabbe @Librarybelle Da big one! 🤩 4mo
dabbe @kelli7990 Yay! 😊 4mo
dabbe @Cuilin @Aimeesue I bet we'd all rank it about in the middle of all of the stories. Enjoyable but kinda meh. 4mo
