Bookwormjillk Love that! Edit: the art not what Dracula did. (edited) 2w
Cuilin Well I don‘t think we‘re surprised that Drac had a Mina snack. (Litsy is not tagging me again. 😔) 2w
See All 8 Comments
BarkingMadRead @Cuilin ugh how rude of Litsy! 2w
Clare-Dragonfly How odd, I didn‘t get a notification either, and I see my username there plain as day. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly See, I think this disproves Van H‘s theory. Drac is clear that in order to make Mina one of his brides, not only does he have to drink her blood, she has to drink some of his. It‘s not as simple as “anyone who is bitten by a vampire becomes a vampire too.” 2w
mcctrish I just came to see if I‘d been forgotten but apparently Litsy is feeling this Monday as hard as I did teaching grade 2 2w
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly I wondered if Drac was making Mina like Renfield since he got rid of him for a new and improved model ? I thought the person had to be drained to a certain point they can‘t come back from but maybe the blood exchange is the final step 2w

Ruthiella I also dug that reference. How appropriate since this group is an offshoot of that original #Pemberlittens Jane Austen group read. 😃👍 2mo

Cuilin Why does Leonard look like Donne? Related to Bellingham? This is not good. 2mo
currentlyreadinginCO Oof waiting for the other shoe to drop 2mo
See All 28 Comments
Clare-Dragonfly Who are they even bribing??? 2mo
mcctrish @Cuilin I missed this, who thinks Leonard resembles Donne? Leonard isn‘t even there. I‘m still queasy over Bradshaw asking Ruth to go with his girls to the sea but not let Leonard come 2mo
Cuilin @mcctrish Mrs Bradshaw said it to Jemima. And then Jemima said he looked like a horse. 2mo
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly Bradshaw is to give Donne money ? But it‘s not to touch either of their hands ? They both think it‘s wrong but has to be done ? Is this just more of EG ‘s social commentary ? 2mo
Cuilin @Clare-Dragonfly sounds like they are paying for votes. 2mo
mcctrish @Cuilin I remember the resembles a race horse part, I thought she meant that positively ; power, grace etc 2mo
Cuilin @mcctrish it‘s Mrs Bradshaw saying Leonard looks like Donne that stood out to me. Why include that? 2mo
mcctrish @Cuilin I went back and read and I see it now, is it cuz he‘s excitable ? They both seem to be talking about mannerisms or are they ?! 2mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish trying to work this out as well …. @Clare-Dragonfly 2mo
Bookwormjillk I‘m hoping tomorrow will clear up some things because I‘m a bit confused 2mo
julieclair @Cuilin @Clare-Dragonfly I, too, think they‘re paying for votes, but I‘m confused as to how they‘re doing it. (edited) 2mo
julieclair The Donne-Leonard similarities are making me nervous. 2mo
dabbe @mcctrish @Cuilin ... Or what if Donne and Bellingham are related? I mean, Donne “gives“ $4000 to Bradshaw (if I read that right ... the politics part makes me go 💤), so if he's an a-1 a**hole, he'd fit right in with the Bellinghams. He is coming from somewhere else, and we have no idea where. Yet. #duhduhduhduhdah 2mo
rubyslippersreads @Cuilin @mcctrish Maybe she should have specified which end of the horse. 😂 2mo
AllDebooks @dabbe the 'politics' frustrates me so much. There is no mention of what either candidate stands for. However, Gaskell's strength is her social commentary. She uses her plot to highlight the inconsistencies and corruption of UK politics. You could 'buy' a constituency through bribes, and this was often the case. So few people had the right to vote it was easily done. 🤬 2mo
julieclair @AllDebooks That‘s interesting info. And was it okay for the person “buying” the constituency to live outside its borders? 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly @AllDebooks I get the impression it doesn‘t matter what each side stands for. There are two sides and that‘s what is important to Bradshaw! 2mo
rubyslippersreads @AllDebooks @dabbe @julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly The political stuff reminds me of Trollope. (edited) 2mo
AllDebooks @julieclair I think so. If you had the money, you could 'buy' any constituency 2mo
dabbe @rubyslippersreads Which is why I've tried him but have never been able to get through a book! 🤩😂🤗 2mo

Ch 5: Ruthie? Also, I‘m trapped in Orlando until early Tuesday morning because our flight was cancelled due to the storm. This chapter made me a little salty 🤣 #anyway #ruthandbellinghamataninn #hereallylikesgettinghisway 🙄 #petulantlittlebaby #ruthhasasoloadventure #ilovehowsheviewedthestranger #ofcoursebellinghamseeshimdifferently #staytuned #hashtagbrigade

Cuilin Of course Bellingham would use the narrow social position definition of a gentleman.🙄 ugh what a charlatan. 3mo

currentlyreadinginCO The reading party sounds delightful, though!! 3mo
Bookwormjillk @currentlyreadinginCO Yes I wanted more info on the reading party

Safe travels @barkingmadread
(edited) 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly A reading party sounds great, but if they were bored being stuck in the inn due to weather, I don‘t think the point of the reading party was actually reading 😂 I‘m not thrilled with the way Gaskell describes the “deformed” man, but for the time it was probably pretty good, especially since he actually seems to be a decent guy, unlike Bellingham. 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly Also, I guess we‘re supposed to infer that Ruth and Bellingham are having sex at this point? The only hint is the fact that they‘re sharing a room. 3mo
willaful Aww, the Foxglove Fairy!
3mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly probably? I wondered the same thing 3mo
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly I wondered too, but even if they aren‘t everyone assumes ( Jennie does) so Ruth is ruined 3mo
Bookwormjillk @Clare-Dragonfly I think so? I wasn't sure either. 3mo
rubyslippersreads I‘d like to know what a reading party really is. If it involves lots of books, tea, and snacks, it sounds delightful. But it also sounds too dull to suit the odious Mr. Bellingham. 😏 3mo

julieclair I totally loved how Laurie and his friends came in and rallied around Amy! And now she‘s off to Europe. Jo lost out because yes, #joisjo. 🙃 4mo
See All 8 Comments
TheAromaofBooks I really enjoyed how these chapters have showcased how much Amy has matured, and how intentional she is about working to be a better person. Also love the mental image of Laurie walking around with May's vases 😂 4mo
Clare-Dragonfly I forgot that it‘s Aunt Carroll—who has barely been in the book up until now—and not Aunt March who takes Amy to Europe! 4mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I know! In both new movies, it‘s Aunt March 4mo
mcctrish I feel for Jo. My aunt took my younger sister to Scotland back in the day because she thought she‘d be more amiable than me, who was a teenager at the time. My sister and I are 5 years apart so I think she was 10 - I‘m not sure what my aunt thought I‘d get up to on my own or even with them. 4mo
Bookwormjillk I feel for Jo but also think she‘ll be better off figuring out how to go on her own terms. I can‘t imagine she‘d enjoy having to behave for Aunt Carroll. 4mo

Cuilin “pickle limes” does not sound appetizing. “Lapse of Lingy” is so much better than dysgraphia. I will be using this from now on. I also want the backstory as to why the Irish kids were foes. 5mo
BarkingMadRead @Cuilin I say lapse of lingy all the time because of this book 🤣🤣 5mo
See All 20 Comments
IndoorDame LOVE “lapse of lingy” never really noticed that phrase before. I think I‘ve always been too wrapped up trying to figure out what exactly picked limes actually were… This time I actually found a recipe, and now I‘m even more confused as to what these things might taste like????? 5mo
dabbe @Cuilin I'm with you. I can see the Irish-English feud for centuries, but the Marches are American. Or do their ancestors come from GB? 5mo
dabbe #lol The old-new hashtag. Now it can mean #lapseoflingy to those in the know. 😀 5mo
Cuilin @dabbe so many Catholic Irish arrived during and after the famine and were not welcomed at all by the established protestant community. Of course, Massachusetts has such a huge Irish heritage community now. 5mo
dabbe @Cuilin I think this idea comes out in SH's VALLEY OF FEAR. If only we could let everyone practice their religion or no religion in peace. 💚 5mo
Cuilin @dabbe 💯 5mo
mcctrish My Nana wasn‘t allowed to play with Catholics growing up and what‘s crazy is they lived in St Boniface in Winnipeg ( French quarter, settled by French Catholics so they‘d be the majority 🙄) her dad went on to be mayor - still not allowed to mix with them ( or be a nurse or hairdresser because those occupations were beneath her ) 5mo
willaful Just remembered that I grew up with no religious tradition yet awareness that there were “Irish Catholics down the street.“ 🙄 I wonder now if that came from my stepfather because it seems unlike my mother. 5mo
Clare-Dragonfly Yeah, there was a lot of racism among groups that we today don‘t consider to be different races—I‘ve learned that as an Italian, Laurie‘s mother wouldn‘t count as white! That partially explains Mr. Laurence being so overprotective and not introducing himself to his neighbors. Now, can anyone explain to me what Latin phrase “lapse of lingy” is supposed to be? It always made perfect sense as it is to me! 5mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I have no idea, I just like the way it sounds. Italians not being considered white reminds of that line from the LaBamba movie, when Donna‘s dad thought Richie was “one of those I-Talians” 🙄 5mo
kspenmoll @Cuilin Agree- yuk pickled limes; love “ Lapse of Lingy”! I would not have explored that phrase without this group! 5mo
kspenmoll @Cuilin My great great grandfather came to Connecticut during the potato famine as 12-year-old. Many Irish & Italians immigrated & by 1860s lived in the city of Hartford in separate areas. By then there was less intense bigotry by the Protestant farmers than when they first arrived. 5mo
julieclair @cuilin I wondered about the Irish kids, too. Is there a backstory, or was it just pure prejudice? @mcctrish That is a wild story about your Nana! @dabbe YEs! 💯! 5mo
rubyslippersreads In all the times I‘ve read this book, I‘ve never noticed #lapseoflingy! 🤣 However, I always thought pickled limes sounded quite unappealing. 5mo
Cuilin @kspenmoll how amazing that you have that information. Do you know where in Ireland he came from? I agree, as time went on the Irish worked very hard and were eventually embraced by their communities. 5mo
Clare-Dragonfly FYI: I googled “lapse of lingy” and found a site saying Amy is trying to say “lapsus linguae,” Latin for “slip of the tongue.” 5mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly even better!! 5mo

Clare-Dragonfly I was thinking of I Love Lucy too! 😂 6mo
TheAromaofBooks So was Rebecca's intent to GOAD Maxim into murdering her ON PURPOSE??? Also, side note, I'm just not sure what I would do if my husband confessed to killing his first wife, no matter how terrible she was. I'm not confident I would be as “obviously I love you and will stay with you“ as our narrator is! 😂 6mo
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks I would have trouble with that too! 6mo
kwmg40 The doctor offered them cigarettes and sherry! What doctor would do that these days? It was a different time! 6mo
Bookwormjillk @TheAromaofBooks yeah, I don‘t think that would have the same effect on me as it had on Jan. 6mo
peanutnine @TheAromaofBooks yeah it seemed like Rebecca's way of taking him down with her, not realizing he would get away with it 6mo
peanutnine The narrator is so desperate to be loved that she'll overlook some HUGE red flags. She's so worried about what others think of her, she can't imagine leaving him even for a good reason 6mo
IndoorDame Totally agree about both of them! If Rebecca wants to off herself, go for it, but suicide by proxy totally makes her an #evilbitch And Jan staying with her husband who‘s perfect except for the whole I‘m a murderer thing is just nuts, like I‘m worried the girl has no basic self preservational instincts! 6mo
5feet.of.fury I was so surprised by the doctor‘s report. What the heck? But, it gives everyone a good reason to believe the suicide… 6mo
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks Yes to everything you said! Rebecca is evil and Jan is not a great decision-maker. 😂 6mo
Roary47 Big reveals! 6mo
ElizaMarie Wow. So… Suicide by proxy!? Makes sense. Rebecca seems like a “if I am not happy nobody can be happy” type of person. #Vile 6mo

BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks it‘s all so crazy! My head is spinning 🤣 8mo
TheBookHippie @TheAromaofBooks was it winter in Russia and all they did was drink while writing ???? Or is this a test to see if we will read anything ?! 8mo

mcctrish What blows my mind is FD just fast forwarded 2 months and only subjected us to random children for a few chapters. Girding his loins for the court room drama? Will Ivan get to be his windbag self ? #Incoherentrambles Grigory and the red herring of the open door throws the whole crime 8mo
dabbe @mcctrish Dare I even think that those children chapters were the COMIC relief before the trial? 😱 8mo
