5feet.of.fury I liked when Ben Mears is talking about writing his new book and he says something about writing it really gory and detailed to “really rub the reader‘s nose in it” which is funny because that‘s what SK does -but hadn‘t REALLY done yet because this was his 2nd published book. Anyway, I just thought that was interesting, my brain latched on to that tiny detail 4d

BookwormAHN My copy just came in from the library but since this is a reread, one of the things that drove me nuts the first time around was the endless descriptions of scenery 😸 4d

Bookwormjillk I loved the forward (read by King himself in the audiobook.) It took a while for this book to get going. I was a little surprised he was allowed to get away with that even in his second book. I enjoyed it though. Loved the nods to Dracula that he built in. 3d

Karkar The first time I read this book it scared me more than any other book before. But this being my third time thru it was a different read to pick up details that I did not the past times. 3d

TieDyeDude @barkingmadread @5feet.of.fury @Bookwormahn @bookwormjillk @karkar I get the annoyance with a lot of characters, but I think it helps up the stakes of the story; you're not just concerned about a handful of main characters, you worry about the whole town. I thought the same recently with Billy Summers; with the office workers and neighbors in the first part of the story, there is more dread because there are many people you want to be safe 🙂 19h

TieDyeDude I also enjoyed, in this book, seeing the characters figure out which vampire myths would work or not. I like when his characters live in “our world“ and have the same cultural touchstones. There is less “Why would you do that?!“ and more “Is that what I would have done?“ 19h

BarkingMadRead @BookwormAHN King actually banned it himself. I didn‘t realize that. It‘s not available for sale anymore, I‘m not sure if libraries carry it. 1w

BookwormAHN They have them on ebay starting at around $50 and I found mine on alibris for around that price back when this first started. 1w

Fortifiedbybooks I won't be able to participate this month, The book isn't for sale (other than costly collectibles) and my library doesn't have the individual title or the collection. 1w

TieDyeDude My reading for the second half of October has been slow and my library still doesn't have copies of this available. I think the announcement of the new series probably had an effect on availability. I'm going to try to read this in November, since I read Salem's Lot recently. I did see an article about the new show and a hope that they cast a full-figure lead since Carrie is supposed to be heavier. 1mo

5feet.of.fury I liked Carrie, soooooo to the point compared to newer King, still good character studies just shortened. I liked the way the story was kind of bookended. 🩸 1mo

BookwormAHN I'm also on a 10 wk wait for Salem's Lot but it is a reread for me. I think I enjoyed Carrie more this go round. This also may be the only King book where he really stays with this story and we don't get everyone on the planet's backstory 😸 1mo

Balibee146 This was my first read of Carrie and I was surprised how short it was. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would as exposure to bits of the films meant it didn't hugely appeal to me. I think the writing style with the patchwork of voices /reporting style lifted an otherwise "by the numbers" plot progression. 1mo

Balibee146 Oh and I didn't spot any mentions of a character wearing a "sportcoat" in this one. Over the course of reading my first few King novels that kept getting mentioned and it isn't a terminology we use in the UK so I noticed it.... Then got a bit obsessed with it being mentioned often ..... I shall be annoying you all with "Spoartcoat" Spotting as the months go by... Sorry! 1mo

Bookwormjillk Like a lot of King‘s books I thought the endings for several of these stories didn‘t stick the landing. Overall I liked it though. 2mo

5feet.of.fury My notes from the stories I made it through: Two Talented Bastids- would have really worked in long form, with more background on the son it could have been great, but it was good. I hated Fifth Step & Willie the Weirdo (WtW immediately no when the young girls breasts were described) 2mo

Danny Coughlins Bad Dream- liked it, I enjoyed that Jalbert was complex and really seeking Justice if misguided. Arithmomania was interesting. I wanted the best for Danny to get out of his predicament and go live with Stevie and hike. 2mo

5feet.of.fury Finn- did not like the torture.

On Slide Inn Road- good. Different reactions from the family under pressure.

Red Screen- AKA local man thinks it‘s more likely his wife has been body snatched by aliens than that he wore her down with weaponized incompetence. 2mo

5feet.of.fury I know we always talk about the politics SK throws in there, it felt normal to me in this book vs Elevation or Billy Summers where it was seeming no reason just because of the timeframe/nature of the character and her situation. 1/6, people calling Covid “just the flu” when you have had family members pass it was hard. So I thought it rang true for Holly & her situation. 3mo

AllDebooks I loved this, it did feel strange reading about Finders Keepers without Bill. Holly's really coming into her own now. The covid storyline made sense and fitted well within the time frame. I didn't think King got overly political, what he did say was appropriate imo. 3mo
