Stephen Kings gem of a story (Chicago Tribune) about a child with extraordinary psychic powers who is on the run from the government. A #1 national bestseller.Andy McGee and Vicky Tomlinson participated in a drug experiment run by a veiled government agency known as The Shop. One year later, they marry. Two years later, their little girl, Charlie, sets her teddy bear on fire by simply staring at it. Now that Charlie is eight, she doesnt start fires anymore. Her parents have taught her to control her pyrokinesis, the ability to set anythingtoys, clothes, even peopleaflame. But The Shop knows about and wants this pigtailed ultimate weapon. Shop agents set out to hunt down Charlie and her father in a ruthless chase that traverses the streets of New York and the backwoods of Vermont. Terrifying and gripping (The Miami Herald) Firestarter is chilling proof that Stephen King is superb (Time).

While shopping at the mall today 🎃 I'd best get to reading Firestarter, before The Institute likely makes a Christmas gift from my folks. 📣💀 With two of the Hot Topic store patches; one for a bookmark, and one for cheerleader Wednesday Addams. 🤓✂️

I found this artwork online and really liked it. 💚

This was a re-read for me, but it's been a long time since I traveled with Charlie. I think I loved it more this time around.

Reading King is like talking with an old friend to me, and Charlie is easily one of my favorite literary characters. She's such a complex character who is just struggling to deal with a life she didn't choose.

Another great Stephen King book. Lots of action, suspense, fire, and "evil" people. I really felt for Chalie & her dad. King's books don't generally have a perfect happy ending but this was probably as close as we are ever going to get.

Blueberry @Crazeedi Thanks for asking. I met with a friend today for lunch and bible study and had a great discussion. I'm doing okayyy with my mom passing. My dad also died last year at this time also. That one still gets me sad. It was a stressful trying year with a lot of angry people and lack of communication. I love me some Steven King but, while I did enjoy the story, I found it to be quite long. There were moments when I found my attention wandering but there were other times where I was fully engrossed in the story. I did love Charlie.

This was my first Stephen King. I honestly thought it was long and found myself zoning out a lot during the long bits without dialogue. I certainly admire King‘s writing and his characterizations but I found the ending to only be half satisfying. Regardless, I‘m glad I gave something new a try and can say I‘ve read at least one Stephen King.

Arguably one of the quickest reads I‘ve had with King. I‘ve never seen the movie, but I‘m seeing now just how salient the homage was in #StrangerThings. A fun read. Would love to see a sequel...

All in all, this ended up being a good story, after King was done holding me hostage. The Dead Zone was definitely a precursor to dabbling in psychic powers & this has a lot of meat where TDZ was just fluffy crap. I really got to love Charlie McGee and found the characters well developed. These happen to be my favorite series of covers and I got this for Christmas in high school! #MountTBR #EpicStephenKingReread

kgriffith @brandybear22 I‘ve not read this one but did it come up as an option for your kid maybe? 10mo
IamIamIam @kgriffith @brandybear22 While I was reading King at that age, I don't often recommend it. However, there is a character who is found dressed in his wife's underwear and has killed himself by putting his arm in a garbage disposal. That was the only real sexual reference above Charlie's parents, which was minimal. I'll think on other horror books that may be more appropriate. 😁 10mo

Ugh... page 334 out of 401 and King is losing me... I've skimmed more than I've read of the last half of this and I'm beginning to wonder why I got caught up in the phenomena of Stephen King to start with... 😪😖 #EpicStephenKingReread

ItsAngel King is very hit or miss for me, I totally get it. 10mo
IamIamIam @ItsAngel Over the years, I've lost a lot of respect for him and it's only now that I've decided go get back to it all. We broke up after one of the Dark Tower installments that I totally hated, plus he's ripped a bunch of ideas off Richard Matheson short stories. Lol, I'm going in publication order but I'll only buy books used or from the library. 😂 10mo
ItsAngel I don‘t like King as a person at all, he is a mouthy asshat. As for his books, they are usually way too long and I spend a fair amount of time skimming. However, there are a handful that I love. 10mo
See All 9 Comments
IamIamIam @ItsAngel 🤣🤣🤣 I love it!! He holds readers hostage just to listen to himself prattle and I'm so glad that we're on the same page on that! I feel like there are so few of us! That being said, The Talisman is one of my all time favorite books, mainly because you can also feel Peter Straub yanking on King's leash, getting him back on task! Lol 10mo
ItsAngel @IamIamIam I agree...prattle on 😂😂😂 I‘ve never read The Talisman. I love Duma Key and Lisey‘s Story...it‘s been years since I‘ve read them now though. There are a lot more King books that I start and don‘t finish than ones I do finish. I currently have Desperation, Needful Things, 11/22/63 and The Outsider sitting on my shelf halfway finished and no plan to attempt to finish them. 🤷🏼‍♀️I MADE myself finish IT.... 10mo
ItsAngel @IamIamIam I got through IT only because I was listening and reading. Big meh. I did like the Bill Hodges series and I liked Gwendy‘s Button Box. 10mo
IamIamIam @ItsAngel My husband was reading just the grown up parts of IT before the movie came out but I'm not sure how far he got. @timg138 I took a year long break after The Stand because it was 3 months of my life I'll never get back!!! I do remember enjoying Desperation and I loved Needful Things, expect the ending was total shit, in true King fashion. The film ending was so much more fitting!!! 10mo
IamIamIam @ItsAngel At the rate I'm going, I'll be catching up to Gwendy's Button Box in my 60s!!! 😂😂😂 10mo
ItsAngel @IamIamIam I remember liking The Stand but not sure I would now. IT just had so much needless detail in it, I wouldn‘t how many pages I rolled my eyes through?! 😂😂 Gwendy was a short and fast read. 10mo

Another one bites the dust! I am caught back up with the #losersclub group now I think!

I actually really enjoyed this one! King presented us with two main characters who were legitimately likeable and easy to care for, and let us dive right in instead if setting up for 100 pages. He does subtle horror so well in this one.

daena I love it too! 12mo

I am about 65% of the way through this and actually really enjoying it. I have been playing with the idea of dropping out of the #losersclub readalong because I just don't care for most of what I have read from King, but I gave myself until this one to decide. This one so far is addicting. I actually like the two.main characters! It's so nice to have a character who cares about more than himself and his desires.

DGRachel King is definitely hit or miss for me. I tend to either love a book or hate hit and DNF. Firestarter is one I loved! 12mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Maybe another one I‘ll try then. 12mo
InLibrisVeritas @DGRachel I completely agree. I have a feeling the next two will slip back into "meh" for me, but thanks to this one I do feel better about continuing onward. The Dead Zone was pretty decent once it got going l, it just took a very long time to get there. 12mo
See All 8 Comments
InLibrisVeritas @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think it's worth a shot, it doesnt seem to take a long to get set up as most of the others I have read so you should know pretty early on if it's for you or not. 12mo
DGRachel Looking at the schedule, I will probably be ghost hosting the group (posting discussion threads without reading the books) until June. I think Christine is the next one I have any desire to attempt. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 12mo
InLibrisVeritas @DGRachel I think there are only 5 next year that I actually want to read, so I might be popping in and out as well. 12mo
DGRachel I‘ve got Christine in June and then I‘ll probably reread Eyes of the Dragon in December as it‘s my favorite King. 😍 What are you looking forward to? 12mo
InLibrisVeritas @DGRachel Pet Semetary, The Gunslinger, Christine, It, and Eyes of the Dragon. Though It is mostly because I have seen the older movie and kind of want to see how it stacks up against it. 12mo

DGRachel I‘ve seen several review lately, so first off - thanks for tagging me in those! I personally loved this one, but I‘ve seen a few so-so reviews. So tell me - if you loved it or didn‘t and what worked for you or didn‘t work for you? I find King hit or miss, and this was a big hit for me. I didn‘t think it was over-written (side eye to you, The Stand) and I loved the characters. 12mo
Karkar I really enjoyed this one. I thought it was interesting how the daughters story unfolded 12mo
JulAnna I grew up with SK books, but somehow this was one that I missed. Maybe the premise didn‘t appeal to me back then? Anyway, I enjoyed this very much, it didn‘t go the way I expected based on the synopsis. I am very glad I read it! 12mo
Eggbeater Normally I love SK but this one just seemed badly researched when compared to the other ones. The little girl's voice was too old and thorazine is not addictive. It didn't hold a candle to The Shining. 12mo
DGRachel @Eggbeater I do agree that Charlie didn‘t sound like a child, but I wonder if that is part of being forced to grow up hiding or on the run. It‘s always interesting to me to see how others react to books, because I loved this one but found The Shining to be underwhelming. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 12mo

I wanted to find out what happened, so that means parts of this book were good, but this one doesn't compare to the brilliance of some of King's other books. There were medical inaccuracies and I did not believe the story was being told from a child's perspective.

Just started this #spookyread 🎃 Firestarter is actually one of the very few King movie adaptations that I‘ve not seen so I‘m going in without knowing what to expect. I‘ve always seen the movies before reading the book, especially the older books/movies, so this is actually really exciting!
