#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024

Finished earlier in the week for #NancyDrewBR & I will echo what seems to be most of the group & say this was my least favorite so far of the books. Very disjointed plot & downright weird in spots, I don‘t remember reading this one as a child (I think there are some gaps in my Nancy Drew reading). There were no noggin knockouts for Nancy & the #NNK counter but a side character got smacked over the head really hard ⬇️

DebinHawaii … & once they got him awake with “stimulants” & decided he was “OK” they left him in care of a young boy & he went to go sleep it off upstairs. Yikes! 🤕😳 #ConcussionCareNancyDrewStyle (edited) 4d

5. Tunnels, elephants and monkeys gone wild...we have a few instances of Nancy in danger. The professor (at least in 1974) gets clobbered over the head. What did you think of the suspenseful situations in this one?

Personally, I thought the whole story was weak. Even as a young reader, I don't think this would be a favorite of mine. #NancyDrewBR

BarkingMadRead He gets clobbered in 1937 as well, I thought that a lot of the events seemed convenient in this one, and the spacey chick really annoyed me. 6d
Bookwormjillk Yup, took a big hit in 1937 and Coya stopped breathing twice. I agree I don't think I would have liked this as a kid either. 6d
DGRachel I was disappointed that there was no #NNK in this one. The extent of George‘s injuries in the house was troubling to me, although she recovered quickly (oh to be 18 and fictional…) 6d

kwmg40 It surprised me that someone else got knocked on the head in this one! 6d
MariaW I think there has been more suspense than the things mentioned above. Okay, there was that grave and heavy impact, but they are still there. George gets herself buried under a mirror, Mrs Allison faints, Rishi alsmost strangles himself, Peter Putham‘s dog attacks the girls, he himself gets locked up and Mrs Allison tries to drown herself. For me it doesn‘t have to be bloody all the time. 🩸🩸🩸 (edited) 6d
DebinHawaii I was worried about them crawling through collapsed tunnels & Carson basically pushing Nancy through the hole to get through. It did seem like prime time for a #NNK And the professors knock out & leaving Rishi with him with him going upstairs to sleep off the head wound that I mentioned in an earlier comment. 🤯😳🤕 6d
Ruthiella I also noticed that Nancy administered quite a bit of nebulous first aid in this one where a medical professional would have been better called for. 5d

5. Every month, we talk about the dangers and adventures that Nancy and her friends face. The 1972 edition had a goat hit Nancy‘s head (not a danger per se, but an unexpected moment). I shuddered when Nancy fell into the quarry.

Any standout episodes for you in the book? #NancyDrewBR

Sace The car flipping over in the river was a little shocking. 1mo
DGRachel I was disappointed the goat didn‘t actually knock her out. I was all excited to add to the #NNK count. The fall into the quarry was terrifying and I did not expect the car flip, either. 1mo
DGRachel Oh! I nearly forgot about George‘s fall of the boat between the barges. That was just as scary as Nancy falling into the quarry. I hope these kids are up to date on tetanus shots! 1mo
See All 17 Comments
Ruthiella OMG, I thought of all the things you can contract from pools of water! Polio! Giardiasis! Typhoid fever! 🤢 1mo
Bookwormjillk The train wreck in the 1935 edition was pretty thrilling. There was also a scene when Nancy flirted with a guy to get a key to a shack. I'm not sure 1960's 1970's Nancy would have done that. 1mo
dabbe Nancy being stuck on the elevator flipped me out. 😱 1mo
CogsOfEncouragement Yes, all good points. One other thing I got hung up on in this story was they don't seem all that worried about Bob. They take care of other errands, etc instead of focussing on finding him. Rude! Then when they find him after days of foul treatment, instead of feeding him & cleaning him up & allowing him to rest, he & Burt are in charge of driving the kidnappers to the authorities. @dabbe @Ruthiella @DGRachel @Sace @Bookwormjillk 1mo
DGRachel @dabbe I‘d forgotten about the elevator but to be honest, that part kind of cracked me up with her being shocked at the new fangled self service elevator. Of course it gets stuck between floors. 😂 1mo
DGRachel @CogsOfEncouragement Poor Bob. 😂 1mo
Ruthiella @CogsOfEncouragement Bob was remarkably unscathed by the ordeal! 😂 1mo
Sace @DGRachel oh yeah! That was seriously dangerous! 1mo
Sace @CogsOfEncouragement 🤣 excellent point! 1mo
dabbe @DGRachel That's the part that flipped me out. I kept thinking of the opening scene in the movie SPEED. 😂 1mo
kwmg40 I thought there was much more danger and excitement in the 1935 story, from the train wreck early in the book to Nancy setting off explosives at the end. 1mo
lauraisntwilder These incidents normally seem important to the plot, but a giant log flew through the window while they ate dinner and they just cleaned it up and went on with the weird plot of Art being jealous. What was the point of Nancy getting stuck in the elevator?? I normally enjoy the silliness of these books, but this one didn't work for me. 1mo
mrp27 The car flip flipped me out. What?! You just flip it back over and drive away?! Also George falling in the water was scary. 1mo
MariaW I wondered whether the „new“ elevator being stuck is some sort of hidden criticism regarding new technology. And the moment the entered the quarry suspecting something might be hidden at the bottom of the lake, it was clear that somewhat would somehow have to check it. I just did not expect it to be an accident. I have to say I am becoming somewhat inured to the dangers now because they all end well and/or seem to repeat themselves. 1w

I‘m giving this one a pick with serious reservations. The mystery itself, finding an unknown object in an unknown oak tree, was fun. The desecration of Native American burial grounds? Not so much. I‘m also pretty anti-angst in most of what I read, so the jealousy subplot was annoying and the damage to old oak trees was heartbreaking to read. I also think we should add at least a 1/2 count to #NNK thanks to the goat. 😂 #nancydrewbr

Librarybelle I think we should add 1/2 too! 1mo

#31x31 #CatsandDogs

Finished #12 last night for #NancyDrewBR this was on my #HauntedShelf TBR & really, the cover is the spookiest thing about this one. Nancy ends up going to Illinois to a college archeology dig site to solve a centuries-old mystery that a bunch of professional detectives couldn‘t solve because she‘s Nancy Drew. This one was fine, probably not my favorite but ⬇️

DebinHawaii …good. There is only one knock to Nancy‘s noggin from a cookie tin, involving a goat but it doesn‘t seem concussion-worthy so I‘m not sure whether we should add it to the Nancy Noggin Knockout counter or #NNK 🤷🏻‍♀️ but feel free to vote here in you think it should be included. 😉
Using this for the BookScavengerHunt #Dark prompt & I‘m still figuring out points but including it in the tagged readathons. Go Team #Flerken !💀

4. Let's talk about the book's adventures. Think about the moments of peril for Nancy and her friends in the edition you read. Does one particular moment of peril stand out for you?

For instance, in the 1965 edition, there seems to be a lot of noggin knockouts! It seemed harsh for the Driscolls to roll a log and throw rocks at Nancy and her friends. These poor characters must have some seriously hard heads (and a lot of migraines)! #NancyDrewBR

Ruthiella This one definitely had a lot of action: the sinking canoe, the attempted kidnapping after the concert, the projectiles and objects rolling down hills, being forced off the road by a truck... I would love to see the parameters the ghost writers were given. 2mo
DGRachel The noggin knockouts were definitely the standouts for me. I don‘t know if the books are actually getting better or if I‘m just rolling with them more, but I was so entertained by all of the narrow misses. I did feel really bad for Cecily (?) who kept getting mistaken for Nancy. I think we should count both of her knockouts as official #NNK since they were intended for Nancy. 😂 2mo
Bookwormjillk The 1934 edition didn‘t have the traumatic head injuries I‘m used to from the 1960‘s versions! 2mo
See All 14 Comments
jlhammar The huge rock that struck the couch and sent Cecily and Niko flying so that they both hit their heads on the edge of the hearth was a pretty memorable one. 2mo
kspenmoll Constant knockouts- how could Nancy solve anything with her noggin under fire! Definitely lots of action & drama throughout. (edited) 2mo
MariaW I liked the attempted kidnapping and the canoe incident because they seemed plausible, but opening a door and throwing a huge rock at someone in a cottage with two men necessary definintely does not. 🙄 2mo
CogsOfEncouragement I felt the most unease when Nancy was alone in the woods in Chap 12 being chased by Vince and another man. She ends up hiding under a dock. She hears the men say they are going to look under the dock, so ND is about to drop into the water and hold her breath as long as possible when the men suddenly hear a whistle and run off to see what Karl needs. 2mo
lauraisntwilder @CogsOfEncouragement Yes! That part with the dock was so intense! 2mo
DebinHawaii @DGRachel You do bring up a good point that Nancy was the intended knockout target for Cecily so we may need to add it to the #NNK counter! Although the rock being thrown was pretty shocking it kind of made me laugh that it was the bad guys‘ “big idea” - “let‘s get a big rock & open the cabin door & throw it in!”😆I guess they did hit 2people with it but it seemed very Saturday morning cartoon villain-esque. The hanging under the dock was scary!😱 2mo
mrp27 Agreed, Nancy alone in the woods was a bit harrowing and all the knock outs, so many! I wonder if they knew then what we know about head knock outs now if there would have been so many. 2mo
TheAromaofBooks My favorite was when the guys were run off the road and “automatically let their bodies relax“ to avoid injury - apparently a lot of experience 😂 2mo
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks That line struck me as well! 2mo
kwmg40 I enjoyed all the action and perilous moments in this story! 2mo
AmandaBlaze I was definitely more entertained with this one rather than Password to Larkspur Lane. 2mo

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 #ForTheLoveOfBooks

Read for #NancyDrewBR I read an extra 15 minutes & finished this during #HyggeHour last night. Book 11 in the series, I read the 1965 version which apparently differs completely from the 1934 addition. This one has Nancy, Bess & George traveling to Maryland asked by her father (who gets around with the cases) to drop off a key for a young woman renting the cottage. There‘s sightings of a ghostly⬇️

DebinHawaii … ship scaring the locals & the romance of the young woman & a rising singer, plus some potential record piracy for Nancy to get involved in too. ***Concussion Spoiler*** Since our #NancyNogginKnockout counter #NNK just tracks Nancy‘s knockouts, our count is now 4/11 books, HOWEVER there are 4 knockouts in the book: Cecily (the young woman—twice, George once (dazed) & Cecily‘s singer boyfriend Niko. 🤕🤕🤕🤕 poor heads! ⬇️ (edited) 3mo
DebinHawaii … This one was pretty good & I didn‘t really remember much about it. Looking forward to the discussion on 9/15 & hearing about the differences in the versions. 3mo

2. I don't know about you, but there were some real nail biter scenes! And, our #NNK count went up to 4/10 books!

This one is probably my favorite so far, given the fast-flowing storyline. What do you think of the adventures in this book? Thinking back to the three books Kurig wrote (books 8-10), is there one standout adventure/danger for you?

By the way...I'm staying away from cisterns! Haha! #NancyDrewBR

DGRachel This was definitely action packed, maybe too much so, and it wasn‘t my favorite. It was just so over the top. How does anyone follow a pigeon from a convertible? I‘m ready for a new ghost writer. 😂 3mo
Bookwormjillk @DGRachel I'm with you- it was almost too much for me. The pigeon and the airplane, it was just a lot. 3mo
lauraisntwilder Honestly, I think most of these have been over the top. Nothing, so far, has beat counterfeiters meeting in caves dressed like the KKK. The plane and the pigeon at the beginning was pretty silly, but the scene where Nancy is hiding under the bed felt realistic enough and pretty intense. And I kept worrying about that dog. Luckily, the criminals were mostly dumb or lazy! 3mo
See All 18 Comments
Ruthiella This one did have a lot of nail biting scenes. Can we consider the cistern (gross 🤢) a secret passage? 😂 I think when Nancy was running around the property was terrifying. All alone and not 100% certain of rescue. 3mo
BarkingMadRead So crazy, so many incidents! I was laughing because in another group I‘m in, someone mentioned Nancy being knocked out again 🤣 3mo
bookandbedandtea This was certainly action packed! I agree that these books are often over the top but I think that "child me" loved that about them. Always so much going on yet, despite, the scary bits, Nancy and her friends always seem to have so much fun! 3mo
dabbe I'm with you, @bookandbedandtea! That's what I loved about them as a kid--those pages kept getting turned! And I didn't mind suspending my disbelief one bit. The older, cynical me has a harder time with that, but I'm still enjoying these rereads all the same! 3mo
PurpleyPumpkin This one was definitely my favourite so far. I thought the author really did a good job of building the suspense leading up to the final reveal/solution. Have any of these books been realistic? I would say no but as @bookandbedandtea and @dabbe have said, these adventures appeal to the little girl in me. 3mo
AmandaBlaze I like the action-packed ones. I remember I would stay up past my bedtime reading these as a kid. Now I see why. 3mo
mrp27 I wasn‘t a big fan of this one, pigeons and planes were too much. (edited) 3mo
Librarybelle I guess I‘m holding onto these for nostalgia—as an adult, it seems the episodes are bizarre, but I can see younger readers being enthralled. I‘ll be thinking about the cistern for awhile, and I keep thinking about Nancy trapped on the boat that is sinking in a prior book! @DGRachel @Bookwormjillk @lauraisntwilder @Ruthiella @BarkingMadRead @bookandbedandtea @dabbe @PurpleyPumpkin @AmandaBlaze @mrp27 3mo
CogsOfEncouragement I loved Nancy fooling them so much - they think she is stuck in bed Nope! they think she is in the cistern Nope! 3mo
bookandbedandtea @AmandaBlaze Yes exactly! I read these over and over as a child and I think the action, despite it being "over the top" is why. 3mo
bookandbedandtea @Librarybelle I agree that there's a huge nostalgia element to these. I love them now because I have such fond memories of them from my childhood. It doesn't matter to me if the stories are "a bit much" from my adult perspective because they were intended to amuse young people, not adults. And they did amuse the heck out of me when I was a child. Mission accomplished. @PurpleyPumpkin @dabbe 3mo
dabbe @bookandbedandtea Agree 💯! 🤩 3mo
MariaW Compared to the last one, this one was pretty exciting. I could not put it down for the last reading hour. But I think the second plot with the expensive glass and Morgan was unnecessary. The story would have been exciting without it as well. 3mo
kwmg40 I too found this installment very exciting. The scene in the cistern was great! 3mo
