What a weird little book! 😂 Vampires and hunters converge in a small town hosting a satanic event.
What a weird little book! 😂 Vampires and hunters converge in a small town hosting a satanic event.
A murder mystery set in the Golden age of Hollywood by the amazing team of Brubaker and Phillips. Seduction, intrigue, paranoia; a gripping thriller.
Ugh, this list was a little depressing, TBH. So few original ideas.
The Avengers (A perfect build-up to the first team shot)
Inception (A masterful movie from a master filmmaker)
Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness (I love Dr. Strange, I love how weird this movie gets, and that music fight is so unique!)
Bonus: Rogue One (A complex story separate but connected to the main movies. Plus Catalyst is an excellent lead-up novel, and Andor is amazing)
“Well, I say America is nothing! Without its ideals--its commitment to the freedom of all men, America is a piece of trash! A nation is nothing! A flag is a piece of cloth!!“
That was it?! WTH, how do you end there? I want all the books NOW.
For real, though, this was an absolutely adorable queer GN. I loved the art, the monotone color, the story. Definitely lived up to the hype
Closing out Pride month with Scissor Sisters, a glam pop rock band forged in the gay nightlife scene of New York City. Try not dancing, or at least tapping your foot, to their infectious beats. "Take Your Mama", "I Don't Feel Like Dancin", and "Fire With Fire" are great, but this is my favorite video, with some fun shadow dancing

This was a painful obvious placeholder second-in-the-trilogy. There is some good character development and world building, and Schwab's prose is so readable and engaging. Make no mistake that I loved the read, but around page 300-350, it became more and more obvious that this was just a 500 page set up for the third book.
Such a fun pride march/festival today! The weather was beautiful, and the crowd was beautiful 🏳️🌈 The picture is maybe a quarter of the total marchers. Puppy Cady was very popular 😁

A couple passages to highlight a couple of the cultural issues discussed.
This is the first major book released (that I'm aware of) about a conversion that is vitally important for humanity. Important doesn't mean good, though. It is very repetitive, often contradictory, and the scope is very narrow. It comes off as opinionated, because you don't find out til the end that the sources and end notes are available online.
All that said, even as a "woke liberal," I was absolutely schooled here ⤵️
I've passed 1000 logged reads on Goodreads! I've been a little nostalgic lately, wishing there were a way to look back at some of the books I read growing up. I've searched once or twice for Reading Olympic lists from the late 90's, but no luck.
Everyone once in a while, I'll get a flash of memory, but I think most of them will be lost to time.
I didn't get much out of this story. The audio narration was... aloof? She did not really injection much emotion into the performance, so it felt like all the events in the story were happening to her and she was just going with it. Maybe it would have been better reading the text, but I wasn't engaged with the audio.
Thanks for sharing the prompt, @vivastory

This image of Galveston was taken on Nov. 23, 2022, from the International Space Station as it orbited 224 miles above Earth. While President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, word that enslaved people were free did not reach Galveston until well into 1865. Army Major General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 on June 19, and spontaneous celebrations broke out as word spread. #juneteenth
Voyager 1 is back online! What an amazing piece of technology. 47 years into a 5-year mission, both Voyager 1 and 2 are in interstellar space, having escaped the influence of the sun's solar winds and magnetic field. It takes almost two days to see how Voyager 1 will react to a command sent from Earth.

I feel like Leonard Cohen is an artist I could really sink into, but I'm not familiar with his work aside from a handful of songs and the album You Want It Darker, which was released just weeks before his death. I've been listening to it more this year, as I think of it every time I hear about Stephen King's latest. "On the Level" is a brilliant song.

New stickers for my work mug 😁
Of course we had to visit the Homer Bookstore. I got Mexican Gothic, and a couple of ARCs that they were selling as blind book dates to raise money for the local friends of the library.
Ham and goat cheese crepe with caramelized onions, over-easy egg, greens, avocado, and mustard dressing 🤤🤤🤤
Birthday brunch for @WildAlaskaBibliophile at Wild Honey in Homer, AK
As someone who is not opposed to, but does not typically read, poetry, I thought this was okay. The poems were good overall. I would have liked more from the introductions of the women. Some were just vague impressions of the women; most didn't even mention their incarceration. I found it difficult to connect with the poetry when I knew so little about the subjects. Still, some of the poems are so powerful regardless of the context.
Little Free Library outside of La Baleine Cafe in Homer, AK. Ms. Alito would not approve 🤣🤣🤣

Where are my fellow blood donors at? Alaska Blood Bank is celebrating 20 years. It's nice to finally be near a donation center again. I donated so little while in Colorado compared to my normal output 😁 🩸

🌻 Siren Queen by Nghi Vo. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. Also The Lord of the Rings (to be fair, I haven't actually read the series. I can never make it past page 100 of Fellowship)
🌺 The Giver by Lois Lowry. Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. Tagged book

This collection does an amazing job at spanning multiple eras of the Star Wars universe and offering tons of easter eggs for long time fans while still telling a story accessible to more casual readers. The art is consistently pretty good among multiple artists. One thing that seems to be missing from certain modern era Star Wars stories is the enduring sense of hope; thankfully, this collection never loses the sense of hope.
@slategreyskies is looking for some good vibes. Here is a picture of our Cady (the white floof ball) with her daycare girlfriend. Cady is a little old lady and has lost her hearing recently. She gets a little overwhelmed when there is a lot of activity around her, so she will retreat to the couch and Greta will jump up to comfort her 🏳🌈
#tuesdaytunes I know nothing about this band's discography, and don't think I've heard any of their other songs, but I love this one! And it was one of the first songs I "liked" on Spotify. Enjoy

What starts out as a western vampire comic ends as a meditation on America, and it's a wild ride! It is rare that as story goes for 10 years and hits every beat; there were definitely some aspects that worked better than others. The ending wasn't a perfect 10, but it did the job. Stellar art, wonderful and consistent storytelling and world building.
I went into this read blind, and I loved it! Roth packed so much world building and emotion and history into 160 pages! A mysterious human quests through an underworld of magic in Chicago hoping to end his suffering. Part of me is ready for many sequels, considering how much work had to go into figuring out the rules of the magic and the different creature classes, but it is a perfectly self-contained story that has a satisfying ending. 🏳️🌈
In celebration of Pride month, please enjoy "Equal Rights" by Connor 4 Real featuring P!nk from the Lonely Island movie 'Popstar': https://youtu.be/_829T0SninQ
For real, though, Happy June Pride. Be loud, be proud!
Lonely Island has an amazing discography. Do you have a favorite comedic song? I also enjoyed Stephen Lynch (You can say Weird Al, but that's more parody ?). #tuesdaytunes

I started 17 (A Bound Woman) today, and I'm looking forward to almost catching up on Wayward Children with 6 (Lost in the Moment and Found)!
A bingo is possible, but not likely 😅
My moose postcard made it into V.E. Schwab's newsletter! She recently posted an address for a fan mail P.O. Box in her newsletter 😁
Visiting a new town? Gotta check out the bookstore! Seward, AK is such a small community, this one doubles as a yarn shop 😅
The beer's a-bubblin'
I made a batch of homebrew last weekend. My first attempt in Colorado turned out really well 🍺. Trying a tripel this time. The recipe was a little off, so I had to make some adjustments, but I'm hopeful for a good brew🤞3 months is a long time to wait to find out, though 😬
Dang, I did not expect the conclusion of the original arc to hit me in the feels like that! I read the first three volumes of American Vampire years ago, and finally decided to go back and read the series the whole way through. I've heard mixed things about the “Second Cycle,“ but this original run is full of brilliant writing and amazing art!
Not listed in the database, but I really enjoyed Darth Vader: Black, White and Red. How much story can you get out of an unstoppable force tearing its way through the galaxy? At least 4 issues! There is a main story that runs through all four issues, plus two additional shorts in each. Fun seeing different takes on Vader, and different artists. I especially liked this look of Vader in the rain!
#tuesdaytunes What is your favorite radio station?
I am fond of several, but the only one I actually still listen to is 88.5 WXPN out of Philadelphia. Memorial Day this year was brewing day, as I attempted my second homebrew, and I was jamming to their Block Rockin' weekend, playing three songs from every artist they played. They also hosted Frank Turner for an excellent performance on Friday, which they arrived live. ⤵️
Thanks for sharing, @Bookwomble This was an entertaining, quick-listen audio dramatization. I haven't read the book nor seen any of the adaptations, but I liked the story and I can see how it could be expanded in some engaging ways.
An excellent limited series from the prolific Jeff Lemire and frequent collaborator Dustin Nguyen. A post apocalyptic vampire tale. Each kid's backstory is slowly revealed, as are the circumstances that led them to occupy an abandoned city.
I love the Judge Dee vampire mystery series, but this is one of the lesser entries. Not much of a mystery, TBH, and the characters were not fleshed out much. Still, a quick, entertaining read.
I feel like this book would have been better served if it tried to be a little less? There is a galactic empire and a rebellion. There are also inhabitants of a world caught in the crossfire, an AI that defected from the empire, and a commune of people trying to avoid the conflict. The threat of the empire is underdeveloped, the locals are a plot device, the AI is exposition-dumped at the end, and the rebels are all over the place. ⤵️
I love K. O'Neill's art, but the story wasn't 100% there for me with this book. Lots of wordless panels that didn't convey to me what was going on, and I never fully connected with the main character's emotional struggle. Maybe the author gave me too much credit to be able to interpret her intentions, but a lot of the story felt vague or implied, and the art sometimes lacks detail, like she was used to drawing large and had to go small here...
Since finishing my recent Star Wars trilogy on audio, I've been binging the Clear + Vivid podcast to try and catch up. In November, he had on Stephanie Land to talk about the Netflix adaptation of Maid and the release of Class. He has the absolute best conversations with guests. There is a section where she talks about being a reluctant public figure that is very interesting. My default podcast recommendation!
Parlour Tricks was an amazing pop group out of NYC with a killer three part harmony led by Lily Cato. Their proudly queer video for "Broken Hearts/Bones" went viral and one of their early songs was licensed by BMW, but I'm sharing a live version of "The Storm" https://youtu.be/UN2uGX8pDRo
Unfortunately, they only released 1 album and 1 EP before disbanding. Share your favorite one-and-done band or whatever you've been grooving to! #tuesdaytunes
This may be the most accurate depiction of a dystopian America, and it ain't pretty. Played for laughs, a private investigator tracks down a radical feminist group looking to make a violent statement. Due to whatever breakdown of society, gangs rule their territory, very little is off-limits for sale or trade, and everyone uses derogatory, racist, and insulting slang. A very simple story used to justify exploring this alternative world.

An excellent book that gives some of the biggest minority heroes a chance to tell their stories. They did a great job of choosing characters that casual fans would be aware of, but not particularly knowledgeable of, and providing some alternate views of major DC and world events. More of an illustrated novel, since it is VERY wordy, and the art does not move the story forward at all, but once you get starting, it's hard to put down
