52 posts | 55 read | 33 to read
A clever and steamy queer romantic comedy about taking chances and accepting lovewith all its complicationsby debut author Ashley Herring Blake. Delilah Green swore she would never go back to Bright Fallsnothing is there for her but memories of a lonely childhood where she was little more than a burden to her cold and distant stepfamily. Her life is in New York, with her photography career finally gaining steam and her bed never empty. Sure, its a different woman every night, but thats just fine with her. When Delilahs estranged stepsister, Astrid, pressures her into photographing her wedding with a guilt trip and a five-figure check, Delilah finds herself back in the godforsaken town that she used to call home. She plans to breeze in and out, but then she sees Claire Sutherland, one of Astrids stuck-up besties, and decides that maybe theres some fun (and a little retribution) to be had in Bright Falls, after all. Having raised her eleven-year-old daughter mostly on her own while dealing with her unreliable ex and running a bookstore, Claire Sutherland depends upon a life without surprises. And Delilah Green is an unwelcome surpriseat first. Though theyve known each other for years, they dont really know each otherso Claire is unsettled when Delilah figures out exactly what buttons to push. When theyre forced together during a gauntlet of wedding preparationsincluding a plot to save Astrid from her horrible fiancClaire isnt sure she has the strength to resist Delilahs charms. Even worse, shes starting to think she doesnt want to...

I‘ve been feeling so burnt out recently and this sweet life affirming sapphic romance was a really comforting and lovely read. I liked the romance but I think I liked the story of making peace with yourself and your family even more. Bright Falls is a wonderful little town to fantasise about living in, which is something I always need from a romance. I‘m definitely going to finish this series.

This is the first thing I‘ve ever read/listened to by the author. I enjoyed the story & the different themes throughout. How some relationships can endure while others can be be found years later. How grief can impact how we view others & others view us. Co-parenting & life with pre-teens. Learning to trust & build a relationship after lots of past disappointments. Definitely want to listen to the next book to learn more about Astrid. #bookspin

I skim read this which is probably how I got through it. There were too many things competing for attention and not all of them are resolved satisfactorily.

I enjoyed the characters and their relationships. I wish that had been explored a bit more. The romance was luke warm at best. I liked both characters, I would have liked it more if they focused on coming together as a family.

God, this was good. Claire and Delilah's connection is wonderful, and I really appreciated that Delilah and Astrid's backstory was complex without either one of them actually being a bully or a villain. Lots of growth and healing and love and heat! I have GOT to get Astrid's book into my life now. #contemporaryromance

Going in, I already knew that Ashley Herring Blake was skilled when it comes to creating tender, vulnerable characters. In fact, I was thisclose to putting her middle grade novel, Ivy Aberdeen‘s Letter to the World, on your #AuldLangSpine list, @JamieArc ! I was eager to see how she‘d fare writing for an adult audience. Quite well, it turns out! The same characterization skills are on display but with adult themes and the steam cranked up! 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/3: The only criticism I have is that her writing got repetitive, occasionally (I almost want to go back and count how many times Claire‘s cleavage takes center stage, for instance)…but AHB even pokes fun at herself for this, in a sort-of meta way; Claire notes, hungrily, that Delilah is “always *leaning* on things.” And, as long as there‘s some self-awareness, I forgive her; sometimes, in lust & love, we hyper-fixate. (edited) 1y
monalyisha 2/3: The villains of the piece, Isabel (the evil stepmother) and Spencer (the monstrously narcissistic groom-to-be) are one-dimensional…but I‘m not even sure I‘m mad about that. Do people always deserve to be given complexity? I don‘t know. I guess I hope for their evolution somewhere behind a very strongly-drawn boundary (or off-the-page/cliff, entirely, in Spencer‘s case). 1y
monalyisha 3/3: My favorite parts of the story are how Delilah finds completeness, not just in love but in finding friends, family, & professional success. I‘m honestly thrilled for her & the fullness of her life. I love the insistence that communication is key, that sometimes we misunderstand, that we can get over it, and that people can change (or at least grow up). I‘m eager to return to this small town and see how the other Bright residents fall (hard). 1y
See All 10 Comments
monalyisha Oh! I also loved Delilah‘s relationship with Claire‘s daughter, Ruby! How well-written and special! It should be noted that Claire is written in fullness, as well. I even envied her bookstore ownership (though a long stint in retail (corporate *and* indie bookstores) showed me that this particular life goal is not for me). #AuldLangSpine @JamieArc 1y
JamieArc I think we share a love for when characters find special connections through non-romantic relationships. That‘s what I loved about this book, both with Ruby and with Claire‘s friends. I‘ve heard others say the second in this series is even better so I look forward to the next one. I didn‘t realize this author wrote MG fiction - I‘ll be sure to check that out! 1y
monalyisha @JamieArc Absolutely! When Ruby hugged Delilah (and Claire noticed and knew how much it meant for a (pre)teen to be hugging ANYONE outside of their peer group)? My goodness. I almost turned into a puddle right then & there. 1y
5feet.of.fury Loved this one! She did really nail the minor details in Delilah‘s interactions, the connections that get missed when you‘re outside the clique & miss the cues & misinterpret everything. Delilah & Ruby‘s reactions were so endearing, from the get go when she fixed Ruby‘s dress. 1y
monalyisha @5feet.of.fury Yes! And she understands how sensitive we *all* are (or, anyone who‘s worth a damn 😜). It‘s so easy to get trapped inside of your own head and be hurt by your own interpretations. 1y
peanutnine LOVE your review! So well said, I agree completely! I just finished the second book and I will say it is just as good/maybe better. More character development of some of the secondary characters as well as delightful new characters ☺️ And I'm definitely going to check out this author's MG work now, didn't know that existed! 1y
monalyisha @peanutnine I‘m happy to hear that the second book is already out! Fun stuff. I‘ll probably pick it up in February. 🥰 Her MG novel was nominated for the Massachusetts Children‘s Book Award, which is why it was on my radar. It‘s a really sweet coming-of-age story with similar themes (queerness, friendship, loneliness, family, belonging, grief, art as lifeboat). 1y

This was so sweet. The character‘s internal perspectives are well thought out without wallowing in it. Made all of the push &pull seem entirely reasonable when the motivations were so well established. A lot of heart.

It's so hard to narrow down favorite reads for 2022, but I think my "read what I want, when I'm in the mood for it" vibe served me well (I get anxious about "challenges" and lists of books I *have* to read). These are the ones that jumped out at me scrolling through the list, in no particular order.

PS: I also think my personal title for this series would be "Ashley McMillan Doesn't Sleep". If Blake could write my HEA next that'd be great ?

HOLY SMOKESHOW, I'm absolutely gobsmacked by this book! Every single page, sentence, hell LETTER, was absolute perfection, and the moment I finished I wanted to go back to the beginning and start over. So steamy and sexy and all of those things but also UGH at the absolutely phenomenally well done characters and their wonderful, flawed personalities and dynamics. I can't remember the last time I stayed up ALL NIGHT reading, but it was worth it! 😍

This was so good! Delilah reluctantly visits her hometown to photograph her stepsister's wedding, but they have never gotten along and she is determined to annoy the bride as much as possible. Enter Claire, one of her sister's best friends, who is flirty and cute and super off limits for unattached Delilah. There is so much emotion behind these characters and family dynamics to unpack. Such a captivating story if you love all the feels 💕

Can't believe I waited so long to read this book! It's a grumpy / sunshine romance for the win with a side of sibling feels. Delilah returns to her childhood home to photograph her estranged stepsister wedding, expecting to hate every second of it. Then she meets single mom , Claire, and suddenly this trip home gets a lot more fun. I think the best indication of how much I loved this book is that I immediately requested the sequel on Netgalley.

I found Delilah immature, petty, and mean and the other characters alternately flat or also mean. I don't feel any chemistry between Claire and Delilah and the dialogue and exposition are boring and repetitive. Blake's books for kids that I've read are thoughtful, nuanced, and emotional and this book is just not that. I don't see what other people see!! Ashley Herring Blake can do a lot better than this, what happened??

Friends I need help. I am 120 pages into this book and I am seriously considering DNFing. No one is more surprised or disappointed than me. I loved a couple of Blake's queer middle grade books and this book is so popular. But so far I find Delilah immature, petty, and mean and the other characters alternately flat or also mean? I don't have a good feel for the characters' chemistry and I find the dialogue and exposition boring and repetitive. ??

TracyReadsBooks Hate being disappointed by a book—especially when I‘ve liked the author‘s other books. DNFing is totally legit. You can always give the book a second chance another time. 2y

I'm always a bit hesitant to review romances. It's just not a genre I read much of generally. This one had its tropes but was fun to read, and there were some nice, steamy scenes. I wish more time was allotted to unpack the Astrid/Delilah story with its complexities.

I confess this book starts with one of my least favorite opening types (character is in bed with someone they can't remember the name of and pondering their life) so that may have contributed to it feeling like it took a while to get going, but these two folks who have been so burned by life just unable to not fall in love with each other was good stuff.

Delilah Green Doesn‘t Care and neither do I (for this book). This was a book club read otherwise I would have abandoned it. LGBTQ+ romance book. It gets less unbearable in the last few chapters. Main reason why I dislike the book: Every character in the book: the girl orphaned at 10 and raised by her aloof stepmother is so weird and awkward! Also every character in the book: She couldn‘t possibly have changed by age 30!

When you pick up a romance novel you know there will be an evitable misunderstanding that leads to a temporary break up before the characters come back together. I just read that part. The break up scene. I don‘t remember ever being affected this much by one. I mean… I know the characters will get back together, but both of them are in a psychologically vulnerable place and my heart is breaking for them both.
