In my quest to catch up to Death at the Sign of the Rook before years end, I'm starting on the third Jackson Brodie title. So far, so good, but I have to ask: what's with all the 'J' names? Jackson, his ex wife Josie, his ex girl friend Julia, now Joanna (and her late siblings Jessica and Joseph). They're all a jumble in my brain!
This book is quite complicated and there were times when I had a hard time trying to remember some of the characters, but the plot was pretty easy to keep track of. I found myself laughing at some of the ridiculous and inevitable coincidences, but there are some very gory and grim scenes that were definitely not funny. The ending is weird, but I think everything turns out OK-ish. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Its so long ago that I read 'one good turn' the 2nd Jackson brodie that I had forgotten how brilliant the plots, characters, and writing was. I loved this 3rd in the series as Jackson finds himself at the periphery of a story in which a historic crime haunts an Edinburgh dr 30 yrs on as well as introducing a wonderful 16 yr old girl reggie. Jackson himself in a near death incident ties everything together. Bk 4 is a must read soon
I nearly didn‘t read this! It‘s the third book in the Brodie series and I thought the first book was just ok, I bailed on the second book but I really enjoyed this one! Full of mystery, great characters (I want to adopt Reggie!!) and lots of action. This was good fun! 👍
Is #ThankfulThursday a thing? Bc I‘m extremely thankful for public libraries and the Libby app 📚💚📚💚 (I finished the Atkinson while I hand-stitched myself a mask for grocery shopping.) Hope everyone is well.

Day 3 (ack, I missed yesterday!) of #CoverLove #7Days7Covers
@Ruthiella
I truly love Kate Atkinson. Her writing style is amazing. It always seems like not much is happening but then she crams in lots of twists and moments that catch your breathe. Away to order the next Jackson Brodie.
Do I have things to do? Well yes. But it's too hot and I'm a grown up and I don't have to do them if I don't want to!!
Ok. Now I've only read chapter one but I'm hooked. Kate Atkinson truly is a master #favouriteauthor
Returning to the author who is definitely at the top if my favourite authors list. Have never read all the Jackson Brodie novels so I'm picking up where I left off. I think!!!
I really wanted to like this one since I enjoyed Case Histories. But it never came together for me. Lots of moving parts, not all of which made sense in the end. As for the end...I found it unbelievable, as if she rushed it to try and create cohesion. I did, however, still enjoy Jackson Brodie and his cynicism.
I really enjoyed this addition to the Jackson Brodie series! I think Atkinson does such a wonderful job with her characters- they feel so real! The plot here really pushes you to keep turning pages and to #N-ever put it down! #30JuneBooks
In preparation for Big Sky, I've been rereading the Jackson Brodies. They really hold up, and this one is my favorite in the series. Anyone else planning on getting the new one?
Very excited about my #usedbookstore haul today!! All of this was about $7!! Plus I got a half dozen books for my little girl as well!
Book mail! Thank you @LauraBeth! Happy to give this one a new home!! I can't wait to read it!!
Reading about Edinburgh in Edinburgh 😊 #yearofmarvellousreading
Apparently never. It lands somewhere between a pick and a so-so
I‘m wrapping up the end of this book, the third in the Jackson Brodie series. I loved the focus on Louise in this one. Definitely want to read the fourth and final one. “A coincidence is just an explanation waiting to happen.”

How could you not love Jackson Brodie? This is my favourite of the series. I so hope Kate Atkinson changes her mind and writes about him again one day.
So I'm working around the clock and I'm tired and a little grumpy. I have also had no time to read - 50 pages in around 9 days. Massive boo. But managed to grab 20 minutes of reading with lunch 👏🏻
Onto the next! I am reading so slow at the moment - my brain is elsewhere and can't get my chill on! Hoping this will pick me back up! What do you guys do when you just can't relax?!? 🤷🏻♀️ (wild Saturday night...)
👆THIS is why I love Kate Atkinson so much. She balances light and dark elements in the most affecting way. The third book in the Jackson Brodie series is no exception, it's absolutely brilliant. The above quote is from an interview with Atkinson at the back of my copy.
Man, Kate Atkinson can swing from humor to tragedy in a heartbeat. Chills.
#TBRtemptation post 5! Excellent cover, isn't it?! This is the third installment in the Jackson Brodie series. On a hot summer day, Joanna's family is heading home along a country lane when her life is changed forever. 30 years later, ex-detective Brodie is on a crowded train when he hears a shocking sound in the night. 16-year-old Reggie is watching tv when a terrifying noise rings through the night. 3 lives cross. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
Catching up on reviews while I catch up on This Is Us...
I ❤️ Reggie Chase! She was the best part of this. I hope she shows up in Book 4.
The writing is great. It's just ... odd. You expect the detective in a detective series to be the main character. But Jackson Brodie is definitely not that in this installment.
It also happens really fast. But that's part of the fun with this one.
#24in48 wrap up
Given that I had plans both mornings this weekend, I can't believe I got this much done❤️
I finished up some stragglers; read one cover to cover; and started 2 more, along with making progress on a short story collection.
Congrats to all the readers who met their goals🙌🏻⭐️❤️
Can't wait for the next one!
@24in48
My #LitsyAtoZ started off with a bang with this one! So moody, with such introspective writing, and characters that just can't catch a break! Very happy I was able to move Kate Atkinson up on my read list. #LetterA
I'm not certain it was the first Kate Atkinson book I read, but I knew I was on to someone good when I spied a front-cover endorsement from my beloved Mr. King. #bestblurbs #seasonsreadings2016
#FunFridayPhoto The Jackson Brodie series is 💯.
just started this tonight and I just love her writing so much.
True to the title, a lot of tragic events occur in this story. But because Atkinson is so good at her craft, she not only manages to tie up all of the seemingly unrelated events and characters, but she makes you feel like justice was meted out in all the right amounts.
It sounds absurd to say this as a compliment, but: Kate Atkinson's writing makes you feel unsafe in your own home. She makes you feel unsafe in your own neighborhood. This book is so vivid, the characters (both good and bad and in between) so real that I'll never be the same again. In a good way. :)
Third in her Jackson Brodie series. As usual, superb plotting and engaging characters.
