Digital Audiobooks: New Media, Users, and Experiences | Iben Have, Birgitte Stougaard Pedersen
84 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Audiobooks are rapidly gaining popularity with widely accessible digital downloading and streaming services. This book engages with the digital form of audiobooks, framing audiobook listening as both a remediation of literature and an everyday activity that creates new reading experiences that can be compared to listening to music or the radio. Have and Stougaard Pedersen challenge the historical notion that audiobook listening is a compensatory activity or a second-rate reading experience, while seeking to establish a dialogue between sound studies and media studies, comparative literature, aesthetics, and sociology.

Audible is having a sale and I may have lost my mind and bought 31 books. 🫣🫣💸💸💸

In my defense most were from two authors that only have audiobooks on audible.

I prefer audio or print books, if I have to I will eread but it‘s my last choice. I use a lot of audio to do other things during my day. 🥰

@ozma.of.oz

Allylu I agree! I prefer audiobooks and print. It takes me forever to read an ebook and I like to crochet, do the laundry or dishes, or paint or sew while I listen to audiobooks. 😊💕📚🎧 12mo

I managed to do 60.4 hours of audiobook listening in October and I got a bingo too!
Thanks for hosting #LittenListen and #LittenListenBingo, @aperfectmjk.
This helped me earn lots of points for #Scarathlon2022.

I have a dilemma. I've been wanting to cancel my Audible subscription for a while now because obviously I'm not using it much but I don't want to lose my credits.

Anyone have some good #audiobook recommendations so I can get these used up?

bookishdawg “A Monster Calls” by Patrick Ness (narrated by Jason Isaacs) ❤️ 2y
Bookwormjillk What do you like? Stephen King‘s books are usually good on audio, and I usually like narrative non-fiction that way. Two I‘ve recently enjoyed were The Quiet Zone and Chasing The Thrill. 2y
DHill Some of my favorite audio are Ashley Bell, The Fireman, The Girl With All the Gifts and The Boys In the Boat. 2y

The storygraph is rolling out audiobook tracking and holy sh!t I didn‘t realize it was that much!! 🤯🤯

Cinfhen OMG!!!! That‘s insane!!!!! I stopped using storygraph (again) but now I feel like I need to update my stats (again)!! I don‘t know why I can‘t stay committed 😬 (edited) 2y
See All 17 Comments
Suet624 That‘s wild. 2y
Simona No I‘m sad that I don‘t track formats/editions …. and that number is 😳😬😲 (edited) 2y
sarahbarnes Damn! 2y
Kimberlone I didn‘t even notice that! Although a lot of audiobooks in Storygraph don‘t even have the time associated with the edition… 2y
janeycanuck Impressive! I‘ll have to check mine. I bet it‘s way lower than I‘d like it to be. 2y
vlwelser Lol. You win. 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I know. Totally crazy. I think you‘ll find ts more interesting now that they are tracking audio! 2y
Megabooks @BookGypsy @5feet.of.fury @Suet624 @sarahbarnes @vlwelser thanks y‘all! It‘s a bit insane that I‘ve spent almost a month of this year listening to audiobooks! (I adjusted the time for the speed I listen at, so fewer hours but still A LOT!!) 2y
Megabooks @Simona I tracked everything in print last year, but I thought this might have been coming, so I tracked everything in the format I read this year. And yeah…maybe I read too many audiobooks! 2y
Megabooks @Kimberlone I try to open a ticket for a correction if I can when one doesn‘t have a length but I don‘t always. I‘m a plus member so my tickets get priority, which I probably why I don‘t mind doing it. I also end up adding A LOT of audiobook editions myself because I read so many new releases. 2y
Megabooks @janeycanuck thank you!! I‘m glad they‘re tracking this now. 👍🏻👍🏻 2y
janeycanuck @Megabooks Yeah - aside from it not being owned by Amazon, the best thing about StoryGraph is their responsiveness to building features people want. It‘s already such a different site from when it launched! 2y
Megabooks @janeycanuck agreed! I hope it stays mainly in tracking though and doesn‘t go too social media. 2y
Kimberlone @Megabooks that is awesome! I do appreciate that Storygraph makes it pretty easy to choose the format. I never go through the effort on Goodreads 2y

Here‘s my review for another book I listened to. I drew a White color card from The Secret Language Of Color cards and I chose a book with a White cover to match the card. I‘m also counting this book for 1 reading challenge. This book has a piece of fruit on it.

My husband and I are going to Utah next week to meet our new niece! My sister in law gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Penelope earlier in the month.

We are driving there so I am asking if anyone has any good audiobooks to recommend for the car drive?

I would greatly appreciate any recommendations. 😀

Some interesting stats! My days off are normally Sunday/Monday, and Monday is the day that I usually do all my errands and running around, so this totally makes sense since I often listen to audiobooks while I am out and about. #audiblestats

TheHeartlandBookFairy oh my goodness, I could have written those exact words! Sunday and Monday are my days off as well and Monday is my errand day so it's definitely the day I get the most listening done 😁 I can have Alexa read me my hoopla books when I'm at home as well but I'm usually so busy running around and making noise that I don't have time to listen. Christmas Eve day I spent baking and cooking so I got a lot of listening done that day 😊 4y
Kimberlone @TheHeartlandBookFairy that is awesome! I‘ve actually really enjoyed having my Monday‘s free because it‘s so much easier to get things done when everyone else is at work, but I‘m going to be going back to a normal M-F schedule in the new year to match my bf‘s schedule. 4y
TheHeartlandBookFairy @Kimberlone , I know! It's nice to have a weekday to get things done and typically Mondays are quiet at the stores. Having said that, there's times I wish I had Saturdays off and I plan on taking more of them off moving forward. Probably at least one a month 😊 Enjoy your new schedule and spending time with your BF 😁 4y
Kimberlone @TheHeartlandBookFairy thank you! And yes, I‘ll miss my Mondays off! 4y

This was the year I finally fully embraced audiobooks, and I‘ve really enjoyed supplementing my physical and digital reading with audio. Audiobooks have made long road trips, airplane flights, and just running around doing errands so much more pleasant! #audiblestats

BobbiB That's amazing! I love that you can see the total hours. I used to listen to a lot of audiobooks when I had a long commute and a mindless job. Now I'm lucky to keep up with my favorite podcasts each week. Maybe I should get back to commuting with audiobooks, even though the drive is a lot shorter now 4y
Kimberlone @BobbiB I also listen to a lot of podcasts but thankfully I am able to keep up with listening to them while I‘m at work. I mostly listen to audiobooks in the car or on my weekends when I‘m working around the house. 4y
MyNamesParadise I love audiobooks on cd for my car rides! For some reason I haven‘t embraced e-audiobooks. 4y

My library recently began offering audiobooks thru rb digital. I‘m thrilled to have even more audiobook options—I‘m just confused as to why they now utilize three platforms. Libby/overdrive, hoopla, and now rb digital. Anyone able to answer that question? Librarians?

Penny_LiteraryHoarders Our library recently did away with Overdrive/Libby, Hoopla and Axis360 to go to only using Cloud Library. It is better than Axis360 but not sure about no more of the other platforms. There are more choices definitely though. (This doesn't answer your question though. Sorry!) 🙂 4y
TiredLibrarian @Reviewsbylola My system has all 3 of the ones you mentioned, and it's because the collections and borrowing terms are different. Ex: Hoopla has the biggest collection & no wait list but you can only get 3 items/mo.; Overdrive's collection has unlimited borrowing but wait lists & smaller collections. Libs subscribe to these services & it's a bit of a nightmare; it's expensive, complicated, and publishers & vendors often change their terms. 4y
jillrhudy Audiobooks exploded in popularity so we bought RBD with a shorter waitlist for bestsellers than on Overdrive. The catalog that Recorded Books offered was cheaper to subscribe to en masse than to buy audiobooks individually. 4y
See All 9 Comments
Reviewsbylola That makes a lot of sense! @jillrhudy 4y
Reviewsbylola We‘re actually able to borrow 12 titles per month on hoopla via my library, and I‘ve noticed the titles offered on it are usually different than Libby. And yes Libby/OD has the worst wait times. 😭 @TiredLibrarian 4y
Reviewsbylola Oh good, so there are even more platforms that could be added. 😅 @Penny_LiteraryHoarders 4y
sebrittainclark My library has RB digital, but I haven't had a ton finding audiobooks I'm interested in. I was told my library did it because it allows magazine rentals. 4y
Reviewsbylola That‘s interesting! My library uses a different (4th!) app for magazines. I haven‘t had much of a chance to browse rb digital yet but the true crime selection looks decent. @sebrittainclark 4y
Mdargusch So many options. I guess that‘s great for us! 4y

HALP! I‘m looking for an audiobook to distract me from the misery of working out. Good narrator is a must (I love Cassandra Campbell, for example). Recent books I loved (though not on audio): The Great Alone, Little Darlings, A Place for Us, The Indifferent Stars Above, and The Girl Who Played With Fire (though I hated this narrator). Any suggestions?

Kappadeemom I just finished Demi Moore‘s book on Audible. She reads it and I like her voice. It‘s also gossipy enough to keep you distracted from exercise 😂😂 4y
ljuliel You may have read it but if you have yet to listen to the audio of The Help, you‘re missing a great treat. Another one that is one of the best I‘ve ever heard was Delores Claiborne. The King one , 11-22-63 was also very good. All David Sedaris and Sarah Vowell audios are good. I know what you mean about the gym. I hate it too. 😱 4y

IndoorDame A very good point, but one that cuts both ways. I often find audiobooks more difficult because I‘m a mostly a visual learner, and the temptation to multitask is genuinely distracting. I still listen to them, but I find some books/narrators impossible to understand in that format (and a few way easier). 4y
SleepyDragon I'm someone who can't multitask while listening to an audiobook or podcast. I've tried, but my mind wanders and then I realize I wasn't paying attention for the last half hour. Still, I don't begrudge other people the audio experience. If anything, I'm jealous they can enjoy a book in a way I can't. 4y
Crazeedi If I'm doing something I dont have to concentrate on, that is a routine task such as cleaning or gardening or cooking, I can listen to a book. But any thing that requires a bit of attention, I've lost the train of the book 4y

Jemisin‘s Broken Earth Trilogy, BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE by Andrea Warner, and any of the Star Wars books (they‘ve got scores and sound effects, and they hire narrators who excel at different voices so the whole thing sounds like a radio play). 4y

I'm not great at taking in info by listening, but I found out the Mercy Thompson series by Briggs is mostly available to me on Overdrive, and I've been wanting to reread those. 75% of the books I‘ve read this year have been via #audiobook, so it comes as no surprise to me that most of my “Books” apps are audio-oriented. 🤷🏼‍♀️ (Plus, I have multiple library cards and Kindle Unlimited to make sure I have plenty of options.) #24in48

Good morning, Littens!

I need your help. I have no idea what I‘m in the mood to listen to, but I need a new audiobook. I‘d love your suggestions. 🙏🏻

xicanti Have you read THE HIDDEN KEYS by Andre Alexis? It‘s excellent on audio. Ditto ECHO by Pam Muñoz Ryan, MEMOIRS OF A POLAR BEAR by Yoko Tawada, THE EDUCATION OF A BRITISH-PROTECTED CHILD by Chinua Achebe, WHITE TEARS by Hari Kunzru, and A DISTANT HEART by Sonali Dev. 5y
britt_brooke @xicanti I haven‘t read any of those - thanks a bunch! 5y
AvidReader25 Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk was one of my favorite audiobooks last year! 5y

jenniferw88 And if peter capaldi is your thing i can recommend 5y
Cinfhen If you love books about books this was hilarious 5y
Cinfhen And I heard the new Chelsea Handler is funny 5y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Thanks! 💚 The new Chelsea Handler is fantastic. It‘s not like her other books. It‘s funny, but also very personal, honest, and sad at times. I loved it! 5y
youneverarrived I probably wouldn‘t recommend this to everyone but I think you like Bukowski? And this kind of reminded me of him. 5y
britt_brooke @youneverarrived You‘re right! Stacked it - thank you! 5y
mom2bugnbee Do you like memoirs? Trevor Noah's Born a Crime was excellent, as is anything that Carrie Fisher wrote. 5y
britt_brooke @mom2bugnbee I love them! I‘m glad you brought up Born a Crime. I read, and loved, it in print back before I started listening to audiobooks and I‘d like go back and listen. I haven‘t read any of Fisher‘s books - thanks! (edited) 5y
Reviewsbylola You‘ve already read this one right? 5y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola I loved Rabbit! Stacked the other one - thanks! 5y

So one of my coworkers is on medical leave for 6 weeks and I‘m taking a lot of projects which means overtime! Hit me with your all time favorite audiobooks!

wanderinglynn I just finished How to Walk Away. I enjoyed the book & the narrator was quite good. 5y
Lizpixie Bad blood by john carreyrou is excellent 5y
Hestapleton @Lizpixie I just finished that one this week!! So messed up. 5y

Lizpixie If you‘re after horror you can‘t go past The Exorcist narrated by the author. Terrified me! 5y
Lizpixie All of the Phryne Fisher books are wonderful on audio 5y
Lizpixie And I‘ve just finished The Wheel Of Time series on audio. Classic high fantasy done right 5y
BookmarkTavern I can not recommend the audiobooks of the Rivers of London series highly enough. There are seven of them, as well as three additional novellas. 5y
BookmarkTavern I also just finished Liegh Bardugo‘s Six of Crows on audiobook, and it was fantastic with multiple amazing narrators for each point of view. 5y

Has anyone else been having issues with #Libby? I know this could be related to my specific library, but a couple of my holds have been deleted with no notice. I thought maybe a new ISBN for the title had been added, but it is strange that it's happened twice now.

Eyelit I have had a few issues, but I‘m assuming it‘s because I access my materials both on Libby on my phone and through overdrive on my kindle. This confusing things 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
Bookwormjillk I had a hold come through and then disappear. 5y
cathipink @Bookwormjillk @Eyelit it's so strange... I guess there are glitches in any system. 🤷‍♀️ 5y

Insomnia again this week. Tonight I used my time to sign up for Libro.fm. I already have a long wishlist, so it seems like a good choice at 3 am. We‘ll see what I think in the morning.

sprainedbrain I love Libro.fm! It‘s nice to support my local indie store and also my audiobook habit. 😃 5y
Bookwormjillk @sprainedbrain I agree! Great concept! 5y

#TBRTuesday

Hit the Mother Lode on my Library‘s OverDrive audiobooks today. But that‘s a LOT of hours of listening in the next 21 days!!! 😜

sammisho I feel like all my audiobook holds always become available at the exact same time! 5y
emz711 Yup same, seriously the worst 5y
Chelsea.Poole Did you know you can suspend your holds? @sammisho @emz711 5y

emz711 @Chelsea.Poole omg! On Libby? 5y
Chelsea.Poole @emz711 yep...go to your holds shelf and tap "Manage Hold" and then "Suspend Hold". That's what mine says anyway. ? I use that feature constantly! 5y
RebL The Untelling was my first Tayari Jones book. 5y
marleed Same here. I suspended several but my number ones weren‘t dropping. So I released my holds. And just my luck they all came down. Good thing I‘m in a reading/fitness challenge right now! 5y
k.reads.5 All the books in the top row are on my TBR! 5y

I saw this advertised on IG today but am finding it difficult to get info on the service without signing up (potential red flag) Do any of you use this service? Could you tell me about it? Cost? Variety? Ease of use?

QueenJen Yeah, if you have to sign up first, definite red flag. 5y
ShananigansReads @QueenJen yeah it gives you a 3 day trial but I need more information first. I did find the FAQs so I‘ll scour those. 5y
QueenJen @Bookjunkie57 Sounds wise to me. I usually wait for more "hype" too, you never know how long it'll last and then what happens to your purchases? 5y

I bought myself a new puzzle to work while listening to my audio books. I find I can't just listen, I have to be doing something. I hope to start it this evening.

Deifio I like to do my colouring books while listening ☺️ 5y

DivineDiana I like cooking! 5y

DarcysMom I #audiowalk, #audioclean, and #audiocommute - without my books, I wouldn't get a blessed thing done. 5y
TheSpineView @DarcysMom I do all those too! And you are right... the audio book makes everything nicer! 5y

My answer is... yes AND no.
Yes because I'm putting in the effort of listening and understanding. No because I'm doing something else while listening, which I couldn't do if I were actually reading!
What do you think about it?
🌙

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I think audio books count - you‘ve had the experience of the book - it shouldn‘t matter if that experience is via the eyes or ears. 5y
Emilymdxn I think taking in all the words to a book counts whether you listen to it or visually read it. I have accessibility issues with holding physical books, which are mercifully getting a little better after years of not being able to read physically, and some people are never able to read physical books cause of disability, so I know it‘s important to a lot of people for listening to count 5y
SW-T I think the effort counts. You can‘t “read” a physical book while driving but you can listen. And physical limitations may make listening easier. Whatever format works and is most enjoyable for the reader/listener counts. (edited) 5y

TheBookgeekFrau I've never tried audio books because even as a child I had trouble following a story read out loud...unless it was a read-along book and record (dating myself lol). The only thing that bothers me somewhat is when they are included with visually read books in monthly/yearly wrap-up/challenges. Because when I see someone has read 200 books in a year, I'm always like, well damn how did anything else get done? 😂 5y
SailorMoon @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Emilymdxn @SW-T @C.Perone you are all so right. I've always considered audiobooks in my personal case as "cheating" (not for people who actually have sight-troubles), but yes... you can experience the book either way! I also had sight-troubles, and I remember listening to them in the hospital when I could not read. So thank God for both ways ? 5y
SailorMoon @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Emilymdxn @SW-T @C.Perone thanks for opening my eyes on the subject 😉💕 5y
Princess-Kingofkings This is an important question to ponder. I've committed to trying more audiobooks this year but I'm easily distracted when I multitask. I've been trying to listen to Lilac Girls at work today but finally turned it off because I was missing too much. We are searching for a new car and I'm selfishly looking for one with Bluetooth so that I can listen to audiobooks to/from work. 5y
TheBookgeekFrau @SailorMoon Thanks for the interesting question 😊 5y
xicanti Yes. Always. Honestly, it bothers me when people DON'T consider audiobooks reading. As others have pointed out, it can be an ableist issue; most blind people can only read audiobooks, and they make life a lot easier for many people with dyslexia. And even if you don't NEED audiobooks in order to read, they still allow you to experience the story. Not everyone zones out while they multitask. 5y
Elizabeth2 Yes. I listened to a book I just reviewed on here and in my review I used the words “when I read this one.” I am attempting to consume more audiobooks so that maybe I can hit more of my TBR. I normally can‘t focus on them while I complete other tasks, but I‘m working on it. 5y
SailorMoon @xicanti there's no need to get so heated up 😰 as I said, and everyone else said, thank God there are audiobooks to let people enjoy a book even when they have troubles reading! And even if they don't have any troubles, it's a matter of taste and habits I guess... there was no judge, we were just pondering the subject! 😉 5y
SailorMoon @Elizabeth2 I'm trying to do the same!!! I have to drive 2h a day to get to work, so this way I can work better on "reading" my TBR ?? 5y
madamereadsalot1 I've only recently gotten into audiobooks. It's something that I struggled with at first for the exact same reasons. But then I read an article about how the part of your brain that's in use when reading is the same that's in use when listening to an audiobook. I don't know the validity, but I choose to believe it's true. Working full time and being a single mom has changed my ability to read as much as I used to, so I LOVE the discovery of them 5y
xicanti It seems my comment came off nastier than I intended it to. I apologize. 5y
OrangeMooseReads I usually say I read the audio edition 5y
SailorMoon @xicanti no problem here, I might have misread you 😉 5y
SailorMoon @OrangeMooseReads seems like a good compromise!!! 5y
SailorMoon @madamereadsalot1 this is so interesting!!! I'm gonna go with it too, I wanna believe in what you said! 5y
BlameJennyJane It‘s all about the experience!! My favorite way to experience a book is to flip back and forth between listening and eyeballs experiences. I drive a lot for work and I sit in the tub/bed/chair a lot for relaxation so I absolutely MUST have both! 😁😁😁 5y
Daisey I completely agree that they count, but I do distinguish between them in my reading stats, as well as usually when I talk about a book/audiobook. Reading and listening are different ways for me to experience a book, and I prefer certain types of books in audio vs. print. Some books do not work for me as audio, yet I read very little nonfiction in print. 5y
SleepyDragon I think we need a verb other than "read" that can encompass both actual reading and listening. I'm too literal in my definitions to say listening to an audiobook is reading, but you did still experience the book, just as seeing Shakespeare performed is experiencing the play. 5y
SailorMoon @NeesyBeth my point exactly! When you see Shakespeare performing, you experience the play but you don't say "I read it", more like "I watched the play". So yes, the experience is the same (in many cases even better in audio or live performance!) but the word we use for it must yet be created maybe! The effort count just the same in most cases! 5y
SailorMoon @BlameJennyJane totally agree! I also flip from one to the other, especially because I drive like 120km a day just to go back and forth from work! It really helps working on my TBR list!!! 5y
SailorMoon @Daisey same here!!! E.g. the most amazing book I've ever read is Ten Little Indians by Aghata Christie... but the Italian audiobook is way better than the paperbook because it's read by many actors and with such a great interpretation that it makes it even more real!!! In some cases it's like living in the book!!! 5y
MallenNC For me audiobooks are the same as print. I'm still experiencing and absorbing the story 5y
SailorMoon @MallenNC I don't assimilate as much with audiobooks as I would do with a paperbook... paperbooks keep me more focused. But I think they are a valid alternative when I feel lazy or just too tired to read! 5y
MallenNC @SailorMoon It can be a different experience, but I've found I do better with audiobooks of classics that are hard for me to stay focused on if I read the print version. It also helps when my eyes are tired. Good question! 5y
SailorMoon @MallenNC as for classics, you are totally right! I'm doing the same here! I wanna read them all, but some of them are way too heavy to read and focus... not counting the neverending amount of time one must have to read even just one of them! So audiobooks in between drives work for me!!! Thanks for pondering the answers to the question with me! 5y
