Miracle Creek
Miracle Creek: A Novel | Angie Kim
A thrilling debut novel for fans of Liane Moriarty and Celeste Ng about how far well go to protect our familiesand our deepest secrets My husband asked me to lie. Not a big lie. He probably didnt even consider it a lie, and neither did I, at first . . . In rural Virginia, Young and Pak Yoo run an experimental medical treatment device known as the Miracle Submarinea pressurized oxygen chamber that patients enter for therapeutic dives with the hopes of curing issues like autism or infertility. But when the Miracle Submarine mysteriously explodes, killing two people, a dramatic murder trial upends the Yoos small community. Who or what caused the explosion? Was it the mother of one of the patients, who claimed to be sick that day but was smoking down by the creek? Or was it Young and Pak themselves, hoping to cash in on a big insurance payment and send their daughter to college? The ensuing trial uncovers unimaginable secrets from that nighttrysts in the woods, mysterious notes, child-abuse chargesas well as tense rivalries and alliances among a group of people driven to extraordinary degrees of desperation and sacrifice. Angie Kims Miracle Creek is a thoroughly contemporary take on the courtroom drama, drawing on the authors own life as a Korean immigrant, former trial lawyer, and mother of a real-life submarine patient. Both a compelling page-turner and an excavation of identity and the desire for connection, Miracle Creek is a brilliant, empathetic debut from an exciting new voice.

A tragic fire at a controversial oxygen therapy clinic leaves 2 dead and 3 injured. On trial is a mother, but everyone lies to cover up their secrets. The plot has nice pacing and it kept me engaged with the story. I did want to know who set the fire. I did not like any of the characters and had mixed feelings about the outcome. So a so-so at 3 of 5 ⭐️.

The beauty of print / never need to depend on battery life! IRL bookclub book - already heard back from one of the ladies - she hated it!! This is a re-read for me & surprisingly I‘m liking it less. Maybe because I think I remember the who/why/how ???

Cathythoughts Interesting! I remember enjoying it at the time. Not a book I‘d choose to read again though. 2y
Cinfhen Hopefully the other ladies in bookclub won‘t hate it @Cathythoughts 2y

I could feel the author‘s personal experiences in this fictional telling - courtroom knowledge, immigrant story, even the hyperbaric chamber with the how/why of its uses. It made for a compelling story. I assume her autism knowledge came from her personal experiences with those parents over many shared hours in an HBOT. I would, however, TW this because there are statements about autism that may be controversial.

Cathythoughts Great review 👍🏻 I enjoyed this book 3y
marleed @Cathythoughts I was engrossed in this one. I was uncomfortable with some of the comments on autism because I‘m close to someone very involved in this world - and I don‘t think she‘d agree with all that was written. So, I read about the author and her journey with this book and respect how her experiences led to this story. 3y

This legal thriller hit heavy on many interesting and serious topics: ableism, parenting, child abuse, immigration cultural adaptation, even the use of hyperbaric chambers for alternative therapies. I believed equally that every character and none them could have done it; they were all so incredibly flawed and sympathetic at the same time. The ending was shocking and the process that led to discovery was well formulated.

My daughter @wideeyedreader has been telling me to read this for months-glad I finally listened to her! It‘s an excellent mystery/thriller with many twists and turns. There was a lot going on here, with court room scenes, what it means to be the parent of a special needs child and the lengths some go to to help their children, to protecting those we love and what it means to tell the truth.

Cathythoughts Nice review! I agree , it‘s excellent 3y

In the end, I'm glad I took my time with this one. There was a lot going on with so many characters and different points of view. The story is about the court case of an explosion at an oxygen treatment facility, figuring out who started the fire. I loved how everyone's full story was slowly revealed over time. This book tackled a lot of hard subjects like having a child with a disability and culturally adjusting after moving from Korea.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month and I wanted to read at least one book from an AAPI author. The tagged book is described as a murder mystery thriller with vibes similar to Celeste Ng's works so I'm looking forward to reading. Might not finish by the end of the month but that's okay.
I also picked up one of Gretchen Rubin's books that I haven't read yet. I love her podcast and loved her previous books.

“We‘ve been lying about so many things for a year, deciding for ourselves what‘s just or not, what‘s relevant or not. We‘re all to blame.”
Had I realized that this involved murder and a courtroom,I‘d have read it a long time ago. There was real depth to the characters, and it was an unveiled look at the all-encompassing role of mothers. I‘m going to give these other overhyped books a try this summer. They may just be my cup of tea!

I had a hard time putting this book down. It kept me up until the wee hours of the morning. Its only downfall is that it seemed a bit drawn out towards the middle. Otherwise, the story was very good. I like learning while I read. This book taught me about the use of 100% oxygen to treat many conditions, including autism. The characters were very believable. This new author did a wonderful job on her first published book!

Great novel set as a courtroom drama with a cast of characters all with various levels of culpability. Tragic tale focusing on the lengths parents will go to to help their children, centered on a Korean American family that run a hyperbaric treatment center that seemed to help autistic kids. Well written but not a full-on page turner. Still well worth the time.

I can't imagine a slower, less interesting, less compelling mystery/courtroom drama (although, it seems to me I've said something similar in the last few weeks). I should have bailed, but didn't because several of my fellow bookdragon friends rated it highly. I thought it was downright boring, and that some (most?) of the attitudes in it were appalling (including dangerous, debunked correlation made between vaccines and autism). #unpopularopinion

A compelling legal thriller, full of twists & complicated guilt. I was glued to the page. However, I wish, like other readers, Kim said more about the danger of so-called autism “treatments,” like drinking bleach. These “treatments” are real & kill autistic people regularly & more explicit condemnation could have been educating. Couple this book with some research & you have an important piece of writing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley #bookspin

Cathythoughts I loved this book 👍🏻 5y
TheAromaofBooks Great review!! I'm always a little concerned by books that portray something happening & then don't specifically mention “hey, not a good idea“ - haven't read this one so I don't know the specifics on it, but a while back I read a YA fantasy where the main character regularly cut herself & it was sort of written like “yeah, sometimes life just be that way & this is a 100% acceptable way to get thru it“ and that just seemed like a very poor message 5y
Hestapleton @TheAromaofBooks oh noooo 😬😬😬 Sometimes I can understand if that is a CHARACTER‘S thought process, but like, stick a quick author‘s note in there!! (edited) 5y
TheAromaofBooks Exactly, or have another character with a contrasting view - in this book, the only reason the character stopped self-harming was because her life “got better“ - it seemed like at some point, someone else in the book could have shown her a way to deal with her troubles in a healthier manner. 5y
