A long and slow read, but I savored it all. While it‘s possible one might love this without having read Moby Dick already, I really feel this novel is much more appreciated and richer if you have.
This novel felt more like historical fiction (Ahab‘s wife encounters Emerson, Hawthorne, Frederick Douglass, etc) than just being strictly a supplement to the story of Ahab pursuing Moby Dick.
Hmm. Good advice (it‘s almost how I do mine) but Ahab‘s wife should organize her books however she wants ✊📚!
Note: I really like this novel, but it is VERY slow going. I am only halfway through, and it‘s been a month (albeit a very busy one) since I started it!
This above really struck me!!
Pictured is an old chess set that belonged to my dad. My mom had texted me this photo a while back confirming whether I wanted it. YES. She hasn‘t sent it out yet but I have so many memories of this set as a kid — not just chess but playing games with the pieces. It captured my imagination, such as it does for her. Never thought of the board as a beach until now!
Idk if this set is also ivory and walnut though.
😍 the author of Ahab‘s Wife mirrors the inscription of Moby Dick. And also this is illustrated in the style Rockwell Kent did for Moby Dick. Love this— now hoping the rest of this novel doesn‘t let me down!
Starting this today as my current poolside read! Need to clean up in and around the pool first while it‘s still shady, though.
I am almost done with this book, and don't want to say goodbye. It's beautiful.
Apparently someone thinks I've been reading too much this morning.... #catsoflitsy
I did it! I finished it! I liked this book, but I don't see how it could be a bestseller. It feels far too peculiar and dense and poetic (which partly bothered me) to be appeal to your average reader. It's an impressive book, nonetheless. I obviously need to read Moby Dick now.
I feel like I've been reading this book since forever! It is SUCH slow reading, but I do like it, even though my favorite part of it is undoubtedly over. 20% left.
Home office today, so I managed to read for perhaps 10 min outside in the sun - and hey, the book just got more interesting! #workplacesetting #feistyfeb
This book is extraordinarily slow to read.
Every time I connect my Kindle to the wifi it's exciting to see which books start pouring in 😁
This was a pick for a book club with some coworkers. Every one of us disliked it, so we all stopped. One of us had even taken it (hardcover and huge) to Italy. She left it there! I know some of you loved it though! #readjanuary #DNF
For anyone with a Nook, one of my favorite books is on sale for 99 cents!
Tried to put together a reading list for #LitsyAtoZ but the engineering OCD side of my brain was frustrated. Decided I needed to catalog all the books on my bookshelves first. Not even 1/3 done and I think I have all the letters represented except X in titles. No way I can mix titles and authors names. It's one or the other.
Any suggestions for titles starting with X?
From the "Read This ... Not That" files. If you were tempted to read Queen of the Night, but were worried it was too long for too little payoff, read "Ahab's Wife" instead. This was a great book, coming to life and creating a fully realized foreground in the background of Moby Dick.
Not the same, but finishing Queen of the Night made my want to re-read this one as a palette cleanser.
Finally getting to this meaty bit of historical fiction - that's been on my shelf for years! Huge fan of Moby Dick, this is proving an interesting, if peculiar, companion.
Yesterday's #libraryhaul! So, I returned 4 books, borrowed these two, and have another 17 from the library to boot. @BookBabe started laughing, and I said, "Well, at least I don't have a problem" ??! And #Coale always enjoys smelling the new books we bring home from there anyway. And they're out of the library's hands for awhile. So it's a win all-around ???. Excellent logic, I think ???.
A gorgeous read inspired by Moby Dick, but centered around Una, a strong, inspiring woman who had her own encounter with a whale. I've seen criticism that the novel is too long-winded, but I found it to be a beautiful read, the kind that stays with you long after the covers are closed. #booksetbythesea #somethingforsept #septphotochallenge
