This was a powerful collection of short stories. A definite content warning for sexual assault for people considering reading this one! Gay has woven such a variety of different narratives that centre Haiti or Haitian people, from the mystical to the mundane. Well worth the read! #queerbooks

My first ever Litsy #bookhaul post! This was a haul from @strandbookstore from a little over a year ago. My third Litsy post ever! Sadly I‘ve only read the top book thus far, although Gourmet Rhapsody and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo have both moved up in priority on the TBR list. Thanks for the fun challenge @Lcsmcat ! #bookhaulchallenge

I finished listening to this as I touched up my nails. This was a collection of short stories about Haitians and Haitian Americans. Each different, and each compelling in its own way. Atmospheric and engaging. Roxane Gay is an undeniably good writer.

I liked the first half and was bored by the second half. I did like it better than her other short story collections.

monalyisha Bummer, kinda! Did you not like “Difficult Women”? 13mo
LauraJ @monalyisha I found it repetitive. 13mo
candority This was my first short story collection by Gay! I don‘t remember how I felt about each half, but some stories were definitely better than others. I‘m glad it was a Pick for you overall 😊 13mo

Quite a gem. Short, some quite short, stories set in/ about Haiti and its people with vivid, sensuous prose. Expect strong women, heartbreak, violence, yearning, lust, sex.

Absolutely stunning writing in this collection of short stories, all related in one way or another to Haiti. Gay is such a precise writer -- some of these stories are short -- just a page or two, but she tells them in a way that makes the reader connect with the characters immediately. Highly recommend. #reversereadathon

Returning these amazing books to my local library. Ayiti was a brilliant collection of early Roxanne Gay stories set in Haiti or about Haitians. The Poet X is a series of poems that tells the story of a teen exploring her creativity and navigating her adolescence.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Roxane Gay has such a command of the short story format that she is able to bring such depth and complexity in such a short word count. I loved the sensual ‘forbidden‘ love in Of Ghosts and Shadows, but was also floored by the harrowing multigenerational story of life born in conflict in In The Manner of Water or Light. This was a brilliant collection and a great starting point for those new to Gay‘s fiction.

Roxane Gay‘s first book must have recently been rereleased or something. Because it showed up in all my libraries at once. Like all she writes, this was real and deep and occasionally hard to read.

Gay‘s debut story collection is a sliver of a book, but will still stay with the reader for a long time. Her writing is raw and emotional as she unpacks the Haitian diaspora. It was also interesting to read the short story that later became “Untamed State”.

I was surprised to see Roxane Gay‘s debut collection available on #NetGalley as it was originally published in 2011. With a new cover (stunning) and a new publisher @GroveAtlantic Gay proves why she is my Literary Goddess. Her words are sharp, cutting, nuanced without always having that severed edge. Her stories are raw, personal, haunting ~ I discovered the Haiti Ms. Gay is so proud to call home in this slim volume of prose. Out June 12 💕

This is my first Roxanne Gay book and I can understand why she is so popular. Ayiti is small, but mighty. The stories, no matter how short, are so powerful. They speak of suffering and resilience, of a country made of hardship and undeniable love. My favourite story was “Sweet on the Tongue” but they all broke me in ways that I didn‘t expect.

Couldn‘t find this book: Urgent: Unheard Stories by Roxane Gay (pictured above) in the @Litsy database and I can‘t remember how to create a new title request. Does anyone know how to do this?

“A mini-collection of essays [64 pp.] on books, reading, and the world of contemporary literature by Roxane Gay available as a signed chapbook.” - #Goodreads #CurrentlyReading

GondorGirl When you go to make a post and you're typing in the title... Litsy gives you a list of suggestions... at the very bottom of that list is a link to suggest a book. 2y
Jess7 I think mine used to have that option, but it didn‘t give me that this time. I will try again, but I‘m wondering if this is something that changed for iOS users with the last update? @GondorGirl 2y
Jess7 Just checked. I don‘t have that option, but I do recall it from awhile ago, because I have suggested a book before @GondorGirl 2y
