The Moon-Spinners
The Moon-Spinners | Mary Stewart
While hiking through the beautiful, desolate hills of Crete, Nicola Ferris stumbles across the prone form of a critically injured man. His name is Mark, and he and his brother Colin are on the run after witnessing a murder. Nicola tends to Mark and insists on joining him in his search for his brother, who vanished after Mark was shot. But hidden in the hills are men who will do anything to make sure that Colin and Mark - and now Nicola - never leave Crete. Sometimes, when you're deep in countryside, you meet three girls, walking along the hill tracks in the dusk, spinning. They each have a spindle, and onto these they are spinning their wool, milk-white, like moonlight. Night after night, you can see the moon getting less and less, the ball of light waning, while it grows on the spindles of the maidens. Then at length, the moon is gone, and the world has darkness and rest, and the creatures of the hillsides are safe from the hunter... One of the best known of Mary Stewart's classic romantic thrillers, The Moon-Spinners is set in an extraordinarily well-realised - and incredibly romantic - Crete and features one of her most memorable love stories.

This is a zippy, suspenseful, fun and beautifully descriptive travel mystery/romance. I had no idea what I was in for when I started it - not this twisty-turny fast-paced and action-packed whirlwind, that's for sure. But I loved it. A little cheesy in spots, but it was all part of the fun! Couldn't put it down. I read it in less than 24 hours - WHILE on vacation with family.

"I found a wry humour in wondering just what Mark would have said, had he known he was packing me off, with prudent haste, from the perimeter of the affair into its very centre."

Breezing through this un-put-down-able novel!

Well written escapism with mystery, adventure, and (just) a dash of romance against the backdrop of the Greek island of Crete. The inspiration for the 1960s Disney movie starring Hayley Mills, the book‘s protagonist is a little older and more independent and the plot more involved and satisfying, although I still love the movie. Will be reading more from this author.

1.It will be better to ask persons how they see me.But I'm here to try help others. 2.I do it every time in everything I do.A couple of minutes by myself, in silence and I can recover. 3. "Everyone is a moon, and has a dark side where she/he never shows to anybody" Mark Twain. I believe in this but I see it in a good way, know our dark side to change it for a positive one, a way to challenge our fears. Thanks for tagging me @kamoorephoto

@Meaw_catlady

The new moon in Cancer, the week of my birthday (July 6th), is making this time especially hard. Moving into shelter, dog being sick, questioning life, that all is tricky!

1 It may seem to be a wonderful thing but it also has made periods of my life incredibly challenging, just FEELING so much. I‘ve often wished I didn‘t.
2 This has become so hard. It‘s been a long time since I nurtured myself and found sacred space.

Mystery on the island of Crete! Read this today, then watched the 1964 film. Love Stewart's writing style. But the movie was not as impressive; however it was filmed on location

CoffeeK8 @Alfoster I believe they also made a movie about it too. 6y
CoffeeK8 @writerlibrarian seriously! It‘s beautiful 6y
CoffeeK8 @Blaire you might enjoy it, it‘s a post WWII romantic suspense by a British writer. Sort of a more modern Georgette Heyer writing a suspense novel. 6y
Alfoster Yes, I remember the movie too as being so beautiful! 6y
Eggs Wasn't this a Disney film in the 1960s with Hayley Mills?? 6y
CoffeeK8 @Eggs yes, it was based on the book. I remember watching it, but I can‘t remember how similar they are as far as plot. 6y
CoffeeK8 @Alfoster yes, such a beautiful movie 6y
Eggs @CoffeeK8 I'm so curious I must read it now 😍 6y
Crazeedi Mary Stewart was my favorite as a teenager, ❤❤❤ 6y

This is my first time reading Mart Stewart and I will definitely check out her other books. What drew me to this one was the movie that I watched when I was young starring Hayley Mills. This book and the movie could not be more different. I was very surprised, but I still enjoyed the book.
