It has been a joy to become reacquainted with Maisie Dobbs. This book is based on the discovery of the remains of an American cartographer, who served in France during WWI.An autopsy requested by his parents revealed that he had been murdered.Daisy was hired to find who murdered him.A packet of letters, buried with him, provided clues for her to follow. The results of her investigation was both surprising and complicated. #serieslove2023 #arcapril

An American cartographer killed during WWI leaves a mystery in his wake. Maisie is on the case, but is also dealing with the declining health of her mentor, Maurice Blanche, and the beginnings of a relationship with James Compton. This book holds major turning points in Maisie‘s personal life and the delicate balance of grief and new love is beautifully handled. Maisie‘s subtle observations and clever mind never disappoints.

AvidReader25 “In silence, with body and mind still, a depth of understanding may be achieved that is not available to one who languishes at the mercy of life‘s relentless chatter.” 2y

Cooler temps today! A great day to visit a local park. Even though we‘re in a county & state where Covid19 cases are ⬆️ 😣, we‘ve allowed Maya to see a few friends recently. As an only child it has been so hard on her emotionally; a picnic w/ a friend really brightened her day.

This was a great Maisie Dobbs book, one of my faves in the series so far!

Since summer sessions started a week or so ago, work has been really busy again. We managed to catch up over the weekend, so I can enjoy a lazy Monday morning reading in bed. I‘m loving the flexibility my newish job provides to choose my work hours!

🥰 #HelloKitty is enjoying open windows in this abnormally cooler June morning. #catsofLitsy

annahenke Isn‘t that lovely about working from home? 4y
alisiakae @annahenke I‘ve been working from home for years, but as a freelancer. I had to go back to being an employee, as my freelance work has dried up since Covid. I‘m grateful for the PT job and it‘s flexibility, even if it doesn‘t pay as much as freelance did! But managing that and remote learning for my daughter was a nightmare. So happy for summer break! Jacqueline Winspear‘s books just get better and better. This one starts in one of my favorite places, the Santa Ynez valley and hunts out the story of love and death of an American cartographer in the British military during WWI.

gradcat @Crazeedi Ummm, this is getting eerie! 😂 We‘re too much alike—although you are ahead of me in the series. But I know what you mean, because some of her books just soar, while others kind of sink (and drag, if I‘m honest!). 👋♥️ 6y

Every Maisie Dobbs book is better than the previous one; this is my favorite so far. Maisie is tasked with finding the murderer of an American cartographer in WWI. Things also pick up in her personal life, and a sad event occurs at the end.

Okay, I love the Maisie Dobbs series, but, dang it, people have got to get better at depicting librarians! In this book, Maisie goes into the British Library for some help with a scrap of poetry. When she asks the librarian if he recognizes it, the answer is simply, “No.” No follow up questions; no, “Let me check out these sources” — nothing. I don‘t know a single librarian who would do that. He does eventually follow up but Maisie has to ask.

I‘m really enjoying the Maisie Dobbs series. The characters and settings are so well-developed that they seem completely real. Every book in the series sheds light on a few particular aspects of life in that time period and fleshes them out so the reader can gain a better understanding of history. In this book, Maisie‘s life changes dramatically, and it‘s beautiful to see. #audiobook

I like these books but don‘t love them. Sometimes the denouement is a bit too dragged out, but I enjoy all the history, and the narrator for the audio is good.

Having just finished #7, I'm halfway through this series. A lovely Litten got me hooked via a book exchange and I'm so grateful! 😘 Not a style I would normally try so once again, Litsy wins! Engaging characters, mysteries to solve, historical backdrops and a strong female lead in Maisie Dobbs guarantees solid entertainment. I'm listening to the series after reading the first in print and highly recommend the audio. #series #audiobooks #mystery

Jerdencon I love this series too... think I'm up to #5 7y

This was by far my favorite Maisie Dobbs book! Masterfully written and the story was inspired by a true soldier. The mystery kept me guessing and I had no clue until the culprit was reveled who they were! Plus there is the beginnings of a new chapter in Maisie‘s life and I can‘t wait to see where that leads!

This series is just excellent. If you want to take a trip through time and space, visiting England in the time between the two World Wars, these are the books for you. Winspear puts the reader not only into the location and time period, but constantly explores the cultural climate of England during that fragile time period unlike any other author I have found. I highly recommend this series!

"In general, she did not mind a solitary repast, often taken on a tray while she sat in one of the armchairs, a fork in one hand and a book in the other. And she was under no illusion regarding the significance of the book, whether a novel or some work of reference. As she turned the pages, the characters or the subject matter became her company, a distraction so that the absence of a dining companion...was not so immediate."

Penny_LiteraryHoarders Maisie is great @PurpleyPumpkin The other great female character in a series (even though I've only read one!) is Maggie Hope. She's in Susan Elia MacNeal's books. She's been cranking them out, but I really liked 8y

I have read and enjoyed many of the Maisie Dobbs books in the series, and I am pleased to say that they keep getting better and deeper as they progress. Some series end up taking shortcuts as they progress but this one did not. I think this may be the one I enjoyed the most so far, as there were a few interesting storylines at play. Well worth your time if you like historical mysteries with interesting female characters.

I like to listen to audiobooks of familiar stories during my work day. If it's a new stand alone story, I need to pay attention. But if it's a series, then there is balance in the level of comfort and in the interest of the characters I already know having new adventures. That allows me the right engagement level throughout my day. This serious is a perfect example.

Eyelit I ❤️ the Maisie Dobbs series! 8y
