Cthulhu Casebooks: Sherlock Holmes and the Shadwell Shadows
Cthulhu Casebooks: Sherlock Holmes and the Shadwell Shadows | James Lovegrove
42 posts | 10 read | 44 to read
It is the autumn of 1880, and Dr John Watson has just returned from Afghanistan. Badly injured and desperate to forget a nightmarish expedition that left him doubting his sanity, Watson is close to destitution when he meets the extraordinary Sherlock Holmes, who is investigating a series of deaths in the Shadwell district of London. Several bodies have been found, the victims appearing to have starved to death over the course of several weeks, and yet they were reported alive and well mere days before. Moreover, there are disturbing reports of creeping shadows that inspire dread in any who stray too close.Holmes deduces a connection between the deaths and a sinister drug lord who is seeking to expand his criminal empire. Yet both he and Watson are soon forced to accept that there are forces at work far more powerful than they could ever have imagined. Forces that can be summoned, if one is brave or mad enough to dare "

The absolute true account of what Holmes and Watson actually investigated back in 1880. 😁

Enjoyed this historical fiction urban fantasy retelling very much.

Caught a cold. Was destined to happen, had to cue for 1.5 hours in the cold yesterday.

So, after having finished two romances, I've put my ARCs for #WeekendReading on pause and am snuggling down with "the true account" of Holmes and Watson.

@Andrew65

The book was a gift from the wonderful @Sarah83 and I've ignored it for much too long.

Incidentally, this is the third physical book off my shelves this year.

DivineDiana Sorry about the cold. What were you in line for 1 1/2 hrs? Cheers on reading your shelves! 2y
julesG @DivineDiana I was queueing at the food bank. As I always do on Saturdays. It was very slow going yesterday and it was very cold. I'll live. And it's definitely not Covid. So I'm only sorry that I can't commit fully to my yoga practice today. 😬 2y

I had a gift card to Barnes & Noble for my birthday and I picked this one up without having heard about it or reading a review of it. Been awhile since I did that, and it didn‘t let me down. It‘s just a simple concept—Sherlock x Lovecraft (and Lovecraft mashups are much in vogue at the moment) but it‘s just a fun, quick read. It doesn‘t try to pretend to be anything but fun. Recommended. Now I need to get the other two books in the trilogy. Sigh.

I enjoyed this one, but not as much as Lovegrove's Sherlock Holmes and the Christmas Demon. I think, as much as I enjoy fantasy in its own right, I prefer more realism and logical deduction with Sherlock.

#TBRPile 📚 A mash-up of Sherlock Holmes and Lovecraft? Um, yes please

This book takes place in December, so I'm counting it as a Christmas story. ☃️??

Overall, the book was alright. It didn't have the "what's going to happen next" factor that would have kept me interested. Could have used more of a mystery element. It wasn't so boring that I didn't want to finish it. I'm a sucker for Lovecraftian horror and Sherlock Holmes. I might still read the sequels at some point.

It had a strong beginning, before the characters had to act a bit stupid to serve the plot. Still, it's a million times better than another Lovecraft/Holmes crossover novel I read. I have come to the conclusion that Sherlock Holmes' contact with the supernatural works best in short stories.

I read this last year as a #buddyread with @Andrew65 and @Sarah83 but never posted about it! I switched Kindles and left a number of books without comment. This book purports to be the “real” story behind Sherlock Holmes‘ adventures. Sherlock is done well, the story is good, but I‘m not sure I agree with the depiction of Watson.

Sarah83 I just ordered a kindle for me aswell. Maybe we can do another buddyread at a time? @Andrew65 6y
Andrew65 @Sarah83 Sounds good to me, I was only thinking we hadn‘t done one fir a while a few days ago. This story was rather a strange depiction. 6y
Sarah83 @Andrew65 we can read anything else aswell. 😏 Today and tomorrow I am not at home, so I can't download a book now, but we could discuss, which one we would like to read. 😏 6y

Is this book in the database more than once? I‘m so confused. @Sarah83 and @Andrew65 are done being #Sherlocked and I‘m quickly catching up. My #criminals entry for #NoteworthyNovember is this story because who‘s better at catching criminals than Sherlock? Ok, I know we have a lot of choices but the world‘s first consulting detective is on the list!

Sarah83 Yes. It is two times in the database. One time it starts with 'the' and the other time without. 6y

Do I understand alchemy within it? Yes
Do I mind murder within Sherlock? No
Do I like occultism? NO
Do I like menlike people? NO

Do I read the second and third part? NO

Thank you for your attention.

Andrew65 Sorry you didn't enjoy it in the end. Was it just the supernatural element that you didn't like? 6y
Sarah83 @Andrew65 yes. I don't like that kind of element in Sherlock books, but that's my personal opinion. 😊 Most people think, it fits well within Sherlock's world. 6y

I‘m starting to get to the spookier occult bits and there‘s more to discuss! I like that the characterization of Holmes and Watson “fit” canon. What do others think? #Sherlocked

Sarah83 I think Sherlock fits more than Holmes. I cannot really connect to the story Watson told. 6y
Andrew65 @Sarah83 @jpmcwisemorgan I liked the Watson character but not totally sure about some of the back story, but I suppose this is what added the supernatural element. I certainly think the author did a good job with the overall style and fell of the book. Holmes certainly feels like Holmes but interesting it presents him in his early days. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @Sarah83 & @Andrew65 I liked that Watson starts out a little unsure, like who is this person but as he sees him work he‘s drawn in. The supernatural element may be warping how they develop as characters, a bit. Sherlock is 26 at the start of the story! That seems so young to be the world‘s first consulting detective. 6y

Had to finish the book prior to library reclaiming it, therefore accelerated my reading, but the last part of the book very addictive and I wanted to keep reading on. An excellent adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes story, it is very different and a supernatural theme compared to ordinary plain mysteries. Very appropriate for this time of year. I bought into this fully and really enjoyed them. Can't wait for book 2 and 3 when published. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

@jpmcwisemorgan @Andrew65 so I read the first two chapters. How did you like the first meeting? What do you think about the foreword?

Another question, if I downloaded the whole book why is my epub shorter than the Kindle edition? See this for the second time now.

jpmcwisemorgan It may be a formatting reason for the length difference. I liked the foreword/introduction bits - they were a good set up. It follows the whole Sherlock is real and Watson really did write about his cases feel of the original stories. I haven‘t gotten far into the first chapter though. 6y
Andrew65 I found the foreword quite interesting, but as was said in the last thread some interesting word choices. Wasn't sure it held together fully. As for the first couple of chapters I enjoyed them but didn't find them significantly different, I'm sure that is to come. 6y

John Watson wrote an alternative yet true accounting of the life of Sherlock Holmes as a way of clearing his conscience - and then shipped them off to H.P. Lovecraft to be locked away. Andrew65 He certainly liked his words! I've finished up to the end of the foreword and about to start Chapter 1. A bit behind! I felt it strange that John Watson wrote them and definitely didn't want them published or publicised but gave them to a writer to look after. Why do that if you didn't want them out there. Yes write them to get them out of you but surely then bury or destroy them. 6y
Andrew65 @Sarah83 what was quite irritating? 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @Andrew65 Maybe Watson really wanted them to come to light but not when he was around to know about it? 6y
