I‘m a fan of Horowitz. Unfortunately, I bailed on this one. The narrator was pleasant; however, I had difficulty discerning which character was speaking. It became tiresome and required too much effort. I would probably be better off reading this one in print.

I‘ve read and enjoyed quite a few of Horowitz‘s books and have always been a Sherlock fan AND given that he had the Doyle estate‘s seal of approval, expectations were high! It didn‘t disappoint 😊
The language and atmosphere were all there, with the plot being a bit darker than your typical Sherlock mystery so that freshened it up some.

I thought AH had the language and feeling of the original Holmes stories almost spot on, right down to the syntax; just a couple of jokey one-liners that weren‘t Watsonesque but were worth it. Slight shame the horror he was leading up to from the start was of the type I thought it might be, but I‘d still give this 5 stars. I didn‘t guess whodunnit - again!

I have never actually read a Sherlock Holmes mystery, and so this was obviously a weird one to start with, since it was not written by Arthur Conan Doyle. But I enjoyed it, and it makes me want to read an original Holmes book! I did not always understand the big picture of what was happening, but I got enough of the details that I was engaged.

Read this for my family‘s summer book club. It was dark but good! I didn‘t see the twists coming and I found Horowitz totally credible as a stand-in for Doyle. It probably wasn‘t my favorite book of his because I prefer his contemporary writing style, but I will totally read the sequel!

55/150 I've always enjoyed the adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and I have to say that this is one of the best I've had to pleasure to read. The plot is wonderfully complex and twisted, just when I think I got it, things are turned on their heads and it's off in another direction. Of course, when Holmes does the big reveal/explanation at the end, it all makes sense. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

When I got home from work I pulled some books that I‘ve been meaning to read. I‘ve read and enjoyed mysteries by Horowitz, Bussi, and Michaelides. Collins would be new to me but the premise looked intriguing. Do any of these look good to you? If not or if you‘ve read them, there are always other options. 😋

Last night we visited a new-to-us bookstore and it was delightful! In addition to some wonderful new releases (TJ Klune‘s new one for example!!) they had the tagged book from the backlist of one of my favorite mystery authors. Then today I saw the number was selected for #bookspinbingo. I‘m excited to dive in! The cats were very cute during my photo session, when I put the books on the many packed book boxes (can‘t wait til we move and unpack!).

Another great listen while doing chores this weekend. Sir Derek Jacobi is an absolute treasure and his performance was fantastic. The reminiscence of an elderly Dr Watson, the story told is one of the bleaker cases that Watson had not written of previously as it would have been terribly unpalatable to his audience. Anthony Horowitz did a good job capturing Watson‘s voice in the old ACD style. Great for fans who aren‘t stubbornly purist.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

I'm so happy that Mr. Horowitz did right by the Holmes/Watson relationship. And I still picture Benedict Cumberbatch & Martin Freeman when I read any Holmes, whether original or a retelling.

Okay. I started this September 1 of 2018...it is now 2020. I am now on the track of continuing books that I have started years ago. I should have not taken that long though. It was good. I liked the book. It was just boring the first half, then along came the books with nice covers. But it gets better. You know, it Sherlock Holmes! Hehehe.

Anyone else binge read a new favourite author. This is my 4th Anthony Horowitz book this year!

For the first time in its 125 year history, the Arthur Conan Doyle Estate authorized a new Sherlock Holmes mystery. Anthony Horowitz done them proud! :)

Funnily, my first thought for #BrassInPocket was brass knuckles, which led me to think of the tagged book?? It‘s been a day so far...haha!

This is about as close to Arthur Conan Doyle as you can get! Truly feel like I am reading another of his. I can see why the Estate approves. #sherlock

Thoroughly enjoyable Sherlock Holmes mystery. I love how everything all wove together at the end and certain details were so well hidden, yet were placed in plain sight. It also truly felt like an Arthur Conan Doyle mystery as well which I really liked.

Monday means a new audiobook for school pickup. I‘ve watched the movies and tv show but I‘ve never actually read a Sherlock Holmes book. I don‘t know how Horowitz compares to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle but so far I am loving it. The narrator is fantastic. 💕

Anthony Horowitz never disappoints. A great mystery read. Horowitz is also the creator of the BBC series Foyle‘s War. I recommend this book and his others, “The Magpie Murders” and The Word is Murder.”

I enjoyed this one.... Probably particularly because my introduction to Holmes and Watson was through TV and film versions over the years. It is clear Horowitz loves the cannon and he does a good job. I expect some purists who adore the Conan Doyle works might have some issues as it is clearly a modern writer and novel format.

When this was released, I didn‘t want to read it because I thought it just wouldn‘t feel right. Now I have to say, I enjoyed having these characters back a lot more than the fact that the story was maybe a bit too complex compared to Doyle‘s.

I think I just have to give up on this particular author; I always have a harder time getting through the books. They always seem to drag a bit for me.

A bit bland until you get to the sinister and scandalous ending!

I will say that Mr. Horowitz is doing a fantastic job at portraying Conan Doyle‘s work.

For the first time, in a long time, the estate allowed the release of an "official" Sherlock Holmes story. This was to me a re-read. Despite the familiarity (and exceptional fondness) I have for these characters, the subject matter is tough, heavy, and oppressive. "The game's afoot..." indeed, but it touches on the utmost evil of humanity. #mystery #sherlocked #recentlyread #bookworm ??❤️

After reading The Magpie Murders, I was interested in Horowitz‘s other books. This one didn‘t disappoint 🙂

Absolutely loved this story. Kept be hooked. I looked forward to heading to bed every evening to read and it kept you guessing until the very last! Definitely a pick for people who enjoy a great mystery, especially a SherlockHolmes mystery.

I love Sherlock Holmes stories. I‘ve read quite a lot of the books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and loved it all. When I heard about this I knew I had to read it. So happy I did. It was perfectly dark and spooky and read just like one of the originals! It was magnificent! Highly recommend.

It amazes me that all writers have a unique voice but for that reason it amazes me more when an writer can copy another so perfectly to be almost indistinguishable. Horowitz brought Sherlock & Watson back in such true fashion, I think Sir Arthur would be pleased!
Of course, as we are told in the beginning, this is a much darker case than the O.G.s. Sadly though, a real picture of the times.

This morning I read the true crime novel I'm on and then worked out and realised I need another audiobook so i grabbed this! Excited-so far it evinces the original style convincingly IMO.
Actually going back out in the world today after "vacay", travel, and hibrnation/migraine. Feels weird.

This book is my favorite book I read this year. It was such a great mystery and Horowitz did an amazing job capturing the feel of Sherlock. I'll definitively be picking up more books written by Horowitz.
